The way I felt about him was similar to the way I feel about Sparrow. And yes it is a bit revisionist. However both him and Sparrow had the opportunity to prove their worth this season, one stepped up ... the other, well you know.

One is playing in a much better team. It's not an apt comparison.

You do realise that by facilitating moves for fringe players, which is what JJ was and doing the right thing by the player puts us in good stead with the powerful player managers.

This work doesn't occur in a vacuum. And player managers always speak highly of our club because we treat players with respect.

Because we have other priorities and big forwards are hard to come by.

Midfields win flags.

No idea if we're too nice. I think we just know what we want and get the deal done.

I do acknowledge that our trades post Mahoney have not been great, but we were also a premier by that stage with a cap that was starting to bulge.

He's no use to the team if half of it is spent in rehab with all these soft tissue injuries.

He's going to be 30 next year, you're not going to get much more from him with his ongoing soft tissue injuries

The last para for me is why we should hold onto him. I do t see the point if we’re not going to get a good return. With Rivers and McVee probably spending more time in the middle next year, even  if we get 13/14 games from him then I think we should hold onto him. 

But if we are serious about having a mini rebuild then we do have to trade out a player or two that is fans won’t want to part with. 

For mine the best player for us to trade would be Steven May( people are going to hate me for suggesting it). I think it makes the most sense as he’s the one player that a trade could work well for all parties. 

He would could help a top 4 contender become a premiership team or the likes of North make finals while pocketing a massive pay packet in his last couple of years. He’s still worth a good draft pick imo he improves so many teams in the short term.

We won't get anything for Salo. I had Fort\Moyle on the bench because we have no depth everyone at the Casey side doesn't deserve a game. McDonald, Hore and Melksham have to go bring in the kids.

Would be catastrophic, especially Melksham. Reeks of getting rid of Junior McDonald. You have to have senior/experienced players around the club or there's no point bringing in kids.

I have but from bullish we’ve lost Jackson, Gus, Petracca, most of Oliver, a fair chunk of Viney and a whack of May and now Gawn’s hobbled as well. No coach goes top 4 with that. I do think our recruiting has been ordinary but look at what’s been available and what we’re giving up for these guys. We gave plenty for May and Lever but now we need those picks for youngsters. We’re transitioning and if we snare a couple of plug and play youngsters, have a solid preseason and get a good run with injuries I’m more bullish about 25 than I was about this year. Gawn, May and Oliver remain my biggest concerns for next year. We’re asking way too much of, and are way too reliant on Gawn and that’s my main issue with the coaching currently.

We likely can’t have both but if Kalani Whote chooses us and our NGA prospects prove fruitful we could be back in a big way the next 4-6 years

It will be interesting to see if the club thinks we need a mini rebuild because as you say a good player will most likely have to make way.

The Demonland interview with May earlier this year (or was it last year?) was telling - May didn't sound at all confident of going beyond his current contract - noting preseasons getting more difficult, age catching up, etc.

He’s played a high impact style of game and he’s had his share of injuries. He’s looked sore and stiff since he broke his ribs. Probably needed a month off to get fully healed and mobile again. 

We've got no chips to play with and little currency in any players. We aren't attractive for players to want to force a trade to come to us for what we've got.

2024 First Rounder is obviously the best mid on the board as we are miles behind the best midfields. 2025 First Round pick we try to trade for a 2024 First Round pick and take the next best mid on the board.

Petty goes back to take the McDonald spot and then later the May spot. Disco stays forward and Jeffo comes in. 

McQualter gets 1 more year with a fitter Clarry. Stafford surely moved on.

They don’t. However long before the major injuries we still lost to Freo by 90+ points , Brisbane by 50 odd at the G.

This year was not about personnel, it was evident from very early on that we came up with a new/revised game plan, sides works it out within a few weeks and then we got caught out.
 

I think we’ll be about the same next year maybe 1-2 more Ws but we will still miss finals as we continue rebuilding. I’d pass on Houston and maybe look at it again in 1-2 years when hopefully we re enter the window.
