What an utterly bonkers post.

Our 2016 list included Dawes, Lumumba, Stretch, Kent, Ben Newton, Garland, Pederson, Michie, JKH, Weideman, Hulett, Bugg, Mitch King, Ben Kennedy, Mitch White, Josh Wagner, Dean Jones, Terlich and Max King. Plus poor old Grimes and Trengove whose careers and bodies were shot.

In what world was that a ā€œstrong listā€?

But then I love ā€œflag asideā€. He’s underachieved so long as you just ignore the [censored] premiership we won.

[censored] me.

So you think one flag was/is the ceiling for the current generation of players?

NO, we should have won 3 with this list, too late now, Oliver will be traded at the end of the year, when they should be changing the coaching list. Longmire or Buckley IN Goodwin Choco OUT

To be honest even making it to another PF at the G.

We haven't been back to a PF since 2021.

Will tell who should go, and that's Richardson. He is responsible for the coaching group. His job is to oversight this group and from what I've seen he is hardly setting the world on fire in a dismal season. Our midfield under Jones has slaughtered the ball and give our forwards nothing. Richardson must fall on his sword for being unable to get the coaches to fix a yearly problem costing us games. Frankly cannot see this club getting back to finals until our midfield kicking and forward structure is fixed. 2026 and beyond is hopeless unless they can turn this around. Enough is enough with same old poo in our forward half.

There are posters on here who are capable of keeping an open mind and the there are a few who are incapable of seeing balance either way.

It is those few who put ridiculous arguments forward such as this not to mention selective revision

Goodwin got handed over a strong list from Roos.

He then proceeded to underachiever with said list. Flag aside and 2018 aside, I can't feel anything but like wasted opportunity for more success between 2017-2024.

Look at it anyway you like but Goodwin is our most successful coach since Norm Smith.

Do we praise him for the effort the players showed

or criticise him for the players lack of composure

the coach is important

but its the players that cross the white line and play the game.

Goody is not telling them to bomb into our i50

and its not his fault our list have all the composure of bambi on an ice rink

Well yes,, but more than import ant

his is the ultimate responsibility.

He has to make them hit the ground with the confidence and will to execute the skills he and other coaches and their ability have given them.

All players are different amd he has the responsibility to select them for the best position for their ability

he has to select the best side to match the opposition .

The coach must pull together all the variables and win the game.

Roos was only here for 1 season without Goodwin, who he selected as his senior assistant and successor and who joined the MFC in September 2014, before the trade period.

Roos influenced precisely one trade/draft period without Goodwin's input.

And that’s the bottom line

The Top Clubs would not accept that

Why should we…..

Being a football manager is not a demotion its a promotion. He will be replacing Alan Richardson, and overseeing the football operation side of the club. It's a more senior role with a lot less public pressure.

I am not suggesting it should happen, but say what you like about Goody, the players do love him and he is a big reason why many of them are committed to the club.

I have no idea if he would be a good football manager, it was just a suggestion.

Alan Richardson's position has come under scrutiny and he's out of contract. My bet is that his role will be reappointed regardless of what happens with Goody.

Make Brad Green football manager, media front and goal kicking coach.

He seems to be the only one with any idea at the top level.

That's completely fair to hold that view, and it is reasonable to critique specific aspects of his performance (or what you consider his performance).

But statements like "he was handed a list" undermine otherwise reasonable positions.

Fair point. I think what I really wanted to say is, he had a very good list and probably he is the first one to feel disappointed about not delivering YOY.

Wth did Buckley ever achieve? Game has gone past him. Honestly don’t know who you’d go after though. Someone who values system and the modern game with skills is a must though.

One kick off having what Goody has. Featured in a number of finals campaigns whilst trying to rebuild a list on the fly. Had a 5-2 head to head record against Goody.

Has openly stated he'd like to coach again and I know for a fact we had made an approach asking him about it not too long ago.

When posters say things like, "game has gone past him", it's bewildering. Like, genuinely. On what grounds do you make that comment?

He coached under Mick straight after retirement and then was a senior coach for almost a decade, falling short by a kick in a GF. And since then, has been in footy through the media, sharing his knowledge and insight into the modern game. Coaching is multifaceted, to say the games gone past him is just wild.

Personally, I think the group is ready for a fresh voice but a voice that commands respect, inspires and has players on their toes again before they even speak a word to the group. Someone with gravitas. Someone like Buckley.

I genuinely see us at a cross roads. I can't see our senior players maintaining a consistent spike in form before they retire under Goody. I think they're all too tired, too bored of the messaging, don't feel like they have anything to prove. I see all of this through a psychological lens separate from gameplan and list issues. I think it contributes to the in-fighting and arguing we see on field. It's all part of it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. When the symptoms start repeating, you know there's something underlying and I think some of what we're seeing in performance, energy, vibe, confidence etc is due to Goodwin. And I think he needs to go.

I think Buckley or Longmire could both get results out of this list (with some major adjustments of course) but the core is very good

Buckley left Collingwood and they are suddenly a better team. No more dinosaurs, got try a younger and more innovative coach. I would say Goodwin no longer can manage the players, I would say he has lost the group. Words are one thing but actions on the field talk louder. He got a premiership but he won't get us another.

Would rather Longmire if we have a choice.

I just hope that the MFC doesn’t sit on its hands and leave Goodwin as coach for next season. Change needs to be made now in prep for next season imo.

I thought he was finished after last year’s GF

But after hearing him on AFL 360 i have come around, if he still has the fire in the Belly to do it, i think John would be an excellent next Coach

Yeah that was my thoughts too. He and Simpson are really good to listen to.

Fingers crossed MFC do something before he is taken by another team.

This is what worries me. We really only have an interim CEO and interim Chairman with their full time replacements several months away from taking their roles full time. It's hard to see them making any changes until they're in place.

Not an ideal situation.

Surely even though they havent officially started they would be involved to make this decision but u r right not a great position to be in as a club.

Yeah I don't think Malthouse saw it as a promotion

It would be pretty stupid to make someone football manager just because of his relationships with players and not whether he can actually do the job. In addition to that, what new coach wants to join a club where the old coach is breathing down your neck.

We have delivered some rank performance this year (and second half of last year as well)

same issues keep recurring

the list is definitely a factor. no doubt about it. i'm not sure a different coach will fare any better if viney, trac and clarry are delivering the ball to our forwards.

that said, if he can't effect changes then what's the point in keeping him.

Goody will coach to the end of the year. Let's see if performances improve. If not, then i hope the powers that be do whats necessary. In a respectful way

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologistĀ  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmedĀ the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).Ā

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
