Because a coach has never been sacked with a year to run on their contract before.

Not when it will cost us $1.6m

The AFL allowed Hawthorn to spread Clarkson's payout over two years of the soft cap.

As Mitchell was on a lot less it probably didn't have much of an impact it.

Altho tbh it probably won't come to that. Given how we are playing there is no chance anything will happen this year.

Top Teams do it every week

We do it sporadically for 1 or 2 Quarters and we do it very well, but it is not consistent enough

Goodwin is still under the spotlight 100%

But we’re not a top team ..yet. We are in the process of blending our new talent with our “old” talent. Of course you don’t play the same way every week as you don’t play the same oppo every week & you may not have the same players every week. You win differently. Instead of wasting negative energy on Goodwin just try & enjoy the evolution of the team and the players. It’s actually fun

How much did Hawthorn have to pay out when they sacked Clarkson?

This little snippet in the Age today had me raise my eyebrows.

No one begrudges the senior coaches’ wages, which averaged about $750,000 per year in 2024,

Given that it's an average there must be some coaches' on around $500k pa.

The article is on underpaid and overworked Assistant Coaches. Well worth a read.

$500k was the starting point for a senior coach fifteen years ago. A lot more money in the game now. I would be surprised if there were many senior coaches on less than $600k these days.

How much of that is this year and how much of that is next year?

Time for Dees fans to sheaf the knives for Goody. A couple of wins buys him some time. He is blending some promising youngsters with older players from the 2021 Flag team. Lets see how he goes for the rest of this season.

Voss is safe for the time being, it wasn't just a win but a good team effort across the board with no passengers which says to me he still has the players.

…and he’s still safe for the year.

Goody isn’t going anywhere and we should all get used to that fact.

He has a clause that he gets full payoput until the end of his contract, so no matter what we have to pay him until the end of 2026 which would count in our soft cap, so he aint going anywhere this year, maybe mid next year if we continue to be poor.

Yes I understand that, but there is no way he's getting $1.6m next year a good chunk of that would be his remaining payments for this season.

If he got sacked this year whatever he is to be paid this year doesn't really matter (It's unlikely he would be sacked until late in the year anyway). His salary next year would be the thing that would be more of a challenge to deal with but a team paying out a coaches contract for a year is hardly unheard of.

Hawthorn sacked Clarkson with a year on his contract. Carlton sacked Teague with a year left on his contract. Neither would have had the Covid discount the AFL put in for a few clubs.

That's nice. Let's have this conversation when we have a few more losses...

ffs lay off Goodwin, hes trying to implement a new game plan, admittedly its taking a while for the players to believe in it, and the switch from the backline for me is way too slow, but they are looking for it, hes blooding youngsters which is good, I mostly blame the playing group for our 0-5 start with our terrible skills that have been on show. we are getting better now the season is in full swing.

Hoping Goodwin can keep the momentum going.

With 16 Premiership Players still representing the Club, we should be a Top Side, that’s the whole point

Maybe I expect higher standards than you

Sorry, that's too simplistic. If that 16 excludes the best 6 players that's gonna make a much bigger dent than if 4 of the best 22 missed a GF and now only 27th to 30th plus the 19th and 20th player have moved on.

Of course age and injury have a bearing too. Is it true that preseasons accumulate and missing one means a full subsequent preseason still has a player playing catch-up? If so Oliver, after psychological issues and an almost missed pre-preseason can't yet be the 21/22 version of himself. Add to that Petracca almost dying, losing fitness, and possibly trust in his body and on-field safety and he too maybe can't be expected to be the player he had been at least for now. Honestly if 2 of our best 3 players are only 85% for now and we've lost the likes of Luke Jackson and Brayshaw and maybe some others are also 85%of their old selves with age it's more acceptable Melbourne's drop-off. That doesn't mean players can be excused for not trying or very sloppy skills. But might explain something.

I am not disagreeing with any of that, but all Clubs face adversity every year. Franklin went to Sydney and the Hawks won the next 2 Flags. We do not handle adversity well.

The skill level in the first 5 rounds was deplorable, including a 10 goal loss to North.

Goodwin should have been moved on with a Handshake at the end of 2023, if we are being totally serious, rather than given an extension, considering what had been allowed to happen with Oliver.

But that is my opinion as you have yours, the biggest issue we lost was Burgess. We have lost our edge in fitness preparation and at the moment cannot run out 4 Quarters, and for that to include 16 Premiership Players (who should know what it takes) is a very bad look

I can't see us sacking Goody during this season or during the 2026 season. If it is to be, I would think the end of this year or end of season 2026. That gives us the best chance of securing the person we really want

Goody might just right the ship, and with a couple of good off season recruits, as we did with May and Lever, who knows what might happen. However, if we lose Trac, Clarry and Kozzie, IMO it's fair to say we are rooted

Who? The club? They publicly set finals as the minimum expectation this year.

"Especially with the crew that he has"

If we had anything like a top 4 list we'd be in the top 4. Not more complicated than that.

(caveat also being that the full list is more or less fully available, which is not our case either)

Why the hell would you sack a coach two years after breaking a huge drought?!!!!! 😯😯😯

Get rid of a recent premiership coach to get a less recent premiership/ preliminary final coach? Huh?! Sorry, most of your last post I agree with but that sentence is a real headscratcher. Add to that you mentioned a team who won a flag then missed the finals altogether and then followed up with an elimination final loss. Be honest were you also suggesting at the time Clarkson should be sacked too? What a waste if he had been! Imagine 5 years later if Hawthorn had spent that period languishing in the middle of the ladder while Clarkson had just turned a no-hoper team into back to back premiers.

We should always make sure we're comparing apples with apples. But I'm amazed people are so desperately wanting to sack Goodwin (and yes, I saw it even earlier than September '23)

I think Goodwin has been unfairly tarnished by his straight sets 22 and 23 finals. I think you can criticise the entire team for their loss to carlton in 23 as that remains one of the most ill disciplined games I've seen from this group but injuries cooked us in both those years yet we finished top 4, a fair effort. Clearly some ego's ran out of control last year but we might just be watching him turn a contest and defence team into a pretty decent transition team. Disappointed we lost to GWS and North but if we can remain largely injury free we just might get on a roll. We'll have to wait and see but Goodwin just may make his mark this year and next. I'll also say that I've had my doubts over the journey and still do.

Where did i ever say Clarkson should be sacked? Hawthorn won the 2013 Flag with Franklin and then won the next 2 without him. We win a Flag and implode

Adversity doesn’t bother the Top Sides, (mostly) they just work harder

Losing 2 straight sets final series on the MCG is enough to change Coaches in my opinion, I believe we missed a serious moment there, but it’s in the past.

I also wonder why it takes 2 years to teach a list to play “Run and Carry” Football….

Others may be happy and only see the 2 recent wins, however I still think Goodwin should go, obviously we have contractual issues with this now.

3 bog ordinary quarters vs a hapless Richmond doesn't excite me either, its just more spin.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are back on the road with a massive challenge ahead — facing the reigning premiers, the Brisbane Lions, at their Gabba fortress. The Lions are licking their wounds after a shock draw in Tasmania last week, while Melbourne’s season hangs in the balance. Can the Dees defy the odds and pull off a miracle to keep their razor thin finals hopes alive?

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
