His record drafting talls isn't great. I'll just leave it at that.

Really?

Given its notoriously difficult to assess talls given bigs who are 17-18 are still filling out and they don't hit their peak until mid twenties, i reckon JT's strike rate drafting tall is above industry average.

I may have missed some talls, but by my recollection JT has drafted in the following genuine talls (in order): Omac, Weed, Jackson, Adams, Turner, JVR, Farris White, Jefferson, Verral  and Ketfield.

Of that group, only two were top ten picks, Jackson and Weed.

Jackson helped us win a flag and may well help us win another with the draft picks we got from freo for him.

JVR look a genius pick at 19. I have zero doubt will be in the top 3 or 4 key forwards over the next decade

Jefferson was pick 15. Jury is still out on Jeffo, but they think enough of him to have extended his contract. And signs are positive that he is building an AFL ready physique.

The rest are all speculative late picks.

Turner looks another genius pick - a mid season rookie draft pick at 21 who is best 22 lock. Gold from a drafting perspective.

We traded out Omac, but he is still playing AFL footy, and if he stays fit will play his hundredth AFL  game this year - statistically very rare for a draft pick past 50.

The jury Is out on Adams, Verell and Ketfield.

But Adams was pick 38, and Verell and Ketfield were rookie draftees so the opportunity cost is minimal, and even if only one plays regular AFL footy JT has done super well.

So by my reckoning, JT has drafted 10 talls - and only Weed and Farris White are definitive busts.

Weed hurt given he was pick 9, but Farris White was a Category B Rookie, so a nothing ventured, nothing gained throw at the stumps.

So at this stage, only one real bust out of ten selections.

The jury Is out on four players, but really only jeffo would hurt from an opportunity cost perspective if he doesn't make it given the others were a late pick and rookies.

Any recruiter in the AFL  would take that strike rate for selecting talls in a heartbeat.

Tauru doesn’t need to have a specific role already in mind when we pick him. As Chaser says, he’s so young and developing late with an awesome athletic profile. I think we would just get that talent in the door and see how he develops in a professional setting.

I think he could become a good tall defender as a worst case scenario but he really could be anything with his skill set. Sort of like a turbo Weddle. I could see a version of reality where he becomes Goodes, one where he’s Curnow, one where he’s Caddy, one where he’s Allie, one where he’s Stewart …. and also one where he’s May.

An athlete like that will always have a role somewhere, and they’re so hard to get.

Agree - the people on this site that are carrying on about picking him obviously haven’t watched much footy where he has played

His ceiling is way higher than some

of the highly fancied undersized mids in this draft imho

Can I have some of whatever you’re on? I see a guy who gets it done rather than a star with JVR.

I’m going off highlights so obviously only see the good stuff but watching Murphy Reid’s highlights he actually is growing on me a little. Wouldn’t be sad if we picked him at 9

Interesting that Reid seems out of the picture if the most recent discussion around Tauru, Allan and Langford is accurate. I liked his highlights as well.

He's not a good defender one on one. It's not his strength. Very similar to Lever, he's  floating 3rd tall in which he's biggest strength is being able to take good strong intercept marks.

The comparison to May is bizarre.. May is a bigger frame with incredible strength who can compete against the likes of Curnow, King, Naughton, Daniher. You'd never ever put Taura on these guys even when he fills out a bit because he hasn't got the one on one strength.

The 200cm plus guys you might have to put a Petty on or draft another tall but I have no concerns with a filled out, 50+ games experience Tauru taking the likes of Curnow and Naughton.

He has the body to fill out and the athleticism to run and spoil, move laterally, wrestle etc. Different built and athletic traits to Lever. Yes, he’s mostly played off his opponents and backed himself to intercept but that’s what talented tall backs should do especially at juniors.

Jt just been on Gettable. Said we will go best available rather than pick for needs as we did last year.
Having listened to Norths list manager as well I think Tauru will still be on the board at 5. If Langford is gone Tauru is our man I think.

Yep to me he has great calmness and footy IQ.

Great speed and burst from contests.

Loves a goal which is what we want from a mid.

This seems to be the thing, unless there is a last minute trade from Richmond for pick 2. I still would be really shocked if the Crows passed on Sid Draper, a home grown talent like that should be incredibly difficult to pass up unless there are some serious underlying red flags

Cal has been keen to put it out there that he’s not as confident with his phantom this year. To be expected with how even it is I guess.

They did an interview with Draper and he said he would be super excited to move interstate.
I think he slides to Saints.

Cal also said we won’t be doing any pick trades.

Yep. If Langford/Smith/FOS are available we’ll take them, if not it’s Tauru is my read as well

I rate Reid as on par with Smith tbh if he is still available at 9 I’d say he’d be on our shortlist - other than the go home factor I still quite like Allen for 9 simply because of his size and athleticism

Allen does look good!

Personally for me it’s Langford and Reid. Two Vic boys.

Just don’t want Armstrong at all!

Draper has gone from being the late darling of this draft to the forgotten man pretty quickly…. Wasn’t it just last week Voss & co were flying to Adelaide to speak with him?

He could still go to Carlton (although Smith favoured) or Adelaide, but the interesting bit of info from Cal is that Draper is in the mix at 2 along with O’Sullivan & Tauru. He was spotted with Todd Viney at Arden Street over the weekend.

So many variables. Tiges having an interest in Allan at 6 creates a range of outcomes for Dees as well. Smillie/Reid or even Travaglia at 9 all possibilities if Tauru is our player at 5.

There’s a little bit to take in here:

Where did the Bo Allan reference come from

Posted

Saints list manager suggested they are happy enough with the young talks they have and mentioned they would go best available but would be pretty happy to get mids.
If both Langford and Tauru are on the board at 5 and we pick Langford there’s a chance Tauru gets to 9.

So if Tauru is rated by most of the clubs as  the Unicorn, there's a good chance he'll be drafted before our first pick (#5)

Of course, the clubs can still swap/trade picks on draft day so Tauru could end up at a host of different clubs

A tall, talented, athletic & versatile player who can play back, forward or maybe even in the middle would appeal to any club

He was originally linked to North as they seem to have a number of developing mids.  And they've got pick #2

This would be a great scenario for us

My worry is that Langford will be off the board at 5 so I’m desperately hoping the Crows take Draper and he falls to us

If so it’s very plausible that Tauru is still available at 9 as I’ve heard no links to him going to Richmond at 6 or to Saints at 7 and 8

Think it will come to Travaglia or Lindsay if Allan is gone.

When Cal talks about p6. Whilst all the recruiters reckon it’s Smillie @ 6, Cal wonders whether Tiges jump on Allan here knowing both Dees & Saints are interested.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
