Hi all, as there is no thread on this I thought it was a good time to start my first one.

I haven't seen a training session since we stopped going to Maroochydore, and never one in season or a captains run. To my novice eye it was a very light session with a bit of ball work and a few ball movement activities. No contact etc and intensity was low and most seemed to be enjoying themselves.

All the usual squad from last week were there with the exception of Salem who was notably absent.

Other additional were AMW (as announced), Lever (with his kids), Woey, Laurie, Jefferson and Melksham.

JEFFO  ????????????😎😁🤩 Magician ....come on dowwwwn, son!

Session finished with some 'relaxed' shots on goal.

My random thoughts on the youngsters:

AMW - was looking forward to getting a look and not disappointed. Smooth mover and nice balance.  Came across as a well put together young man when talking to the kids at the end. The thing that stood out for me was the definition of his legs, he doesn't miss leg day!

Kynan Brown- odd body shape and looks a lot smaller than he is. Reminds me of a German Sheppard pup who has to grow Ito it's ears and paws. I can't wait to see what his body develops into. Looks as young as he is.

Jefferson - a lot bigger than I expected. Moved well, good shot at goal. Will settle quickly when he gets his chance and I am glad we are not rushing him. Think his chest will fill out more and his strength will continue to improve. From a distance his body and movement reminded me of Charlie Curnow.

Tholstrup - such a pup. So energetic and has a great swagger. He has a frame that says power and when he fills it out and develops he will be Tracc mk2. Interesting when he was having shots at goal from the boundary he really thumped the ball.

Windsor - so smooth, so balanced, kicking is just so effortless for him. When he was having shots he just caressed the shots.

Woey - was there but not enough in my view to see much. One of my favourites who I hold great hope for. Glad he made the team this week.

Laurie - even at training I just can't see it with him.

Turner - hearing him speak to the kids on the boundary he reminded me of every bloke I have ever met in Albury. (That's not a bad thing). Good strapping, wholesome country lad. He and Petty were both moving well.

Happy to answer any questions, just remember that I text like a monkey on a typewriter, so be patient.

How did Frita's hair look today @Left Foot Snap?

Good hair QD, but to me he was one who didn't really seem happy out there today. Hopefully it's just a perception but he doesn't look confident to me. Looks like the weight of the world is on his shoulders. Saw him miss a snap in a drill and on the way back to the centre Stafford was having a word with him and he didn't seem happy or listening. All perception from the boundary and he is likely just frustrated with his form and the extra attention he has been getting lately. Can't wait for him to be firing again, and hopefully that is tomorrow night. That should bring the joy back.

Jefferson is traveling with the team as reward for good form. We do this often with the younger players who are on the cusp to show them what it’s like to travel for a game and get them really involved on game day. It’s great experience.

I missed Howes not being there today until I saw his omission from the side.

Think that will be remedied in time. Looks to me he will end up barrel chested. Quite excited to watch his progression and growth after today.

Do you think Jeffo's growth and development will develop over the next week or so Lefty?

I'm talking over the next year or so.

Not saying he won't get games till then, but his impact will be better.

He's very lucky to be in the 22 given his form in the last few months.

Unfortunatley Smacca hasn't stepped up (so far) and Melk is at least a month away.

Should concave or convex be a better shape for a chest mark?  Hopefully not a Chris Dawes trampoline chest anyway.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
