No I disagree. Talent wise that is what is expected of us.

You cannot fault the Eagles effort and intensity. That is a team that is in the hunt and eager.

Something don’t smell right with this team. To look that flat and chasing tale off a 10 day break ? I mean seriously we should have been all over them.

what about out contest work ? What in hell is going on there? We saw the intensity of the last quarter last week and that is what I expected all game as a response.

I know we will string a few good games together but our weaknesses are for all to see. This new game plan will not solve anything.

Our midfield is overrated. A kid with 9 games just showed the world that fact.

And to think this team is missing their key forward and best ball user. Who were we missing besides Lever? JVR has he even kicked 10 goals? Turner is still wet behind the ears.

We should have let Petty go to the Crows and given the kitchen sink for Reid.

I agree that is should be what is expected of us, BUT we should always counter it with respect for our opponents. The team expected a win just by turning up, and it showed.

Hard to disagree with everything else!

Can someone please tell me if Goody’s presser is worth watching with some tangible β€˜learnings’ (like what we’re going to do about our slow starts, taking teams for granted, where our midfield has gone in 2024 etc), or if it’s just going to bum me out even more than I am now.

I thought he spoke really well, and in all honesty carried himself like someone who was very aware how far off the pace we were tonight.

I actually think Simon doesn’t get enough credit for how composed he is in front of the media. He gives them something, but never anything that will be of value to opponents.

First time another team has done what they wanted with us for about four years. Since the Cairns debacle, we have either been in every game or had a real off day. The boys tried today, but a fitter, younger, hungrier team made them look old. Reid is worth the hype and we didn't have an answer. He made Oliver and Trac look like yesterday's news, just bounced off them.

Our ressies are getting smashed every other week. We've got a bunch of absolute journeymen in and around the team, and no real hot talent to bring in with the exception of Tholstrup who looked a long way off and plays in a position we're well stocked in.

Its 2024 and our tall forward options are Brown, Petty, van Rooyen, Fullarton, Turner, Schache, Jefferson. Just hopeless mismanagement when you look at it in the cold light of day. All our money is spent on the midfield and defence. The defenders were terrible but deserve a mulligan. The mids have been smashed around the ball all year.

This isn't the first time this season we've been bullied.

When will Goody pull the trigger & move Petty back & TMac forward when we are struggling? Something has to change as he refuses to drop anyone.

Not what I said though. Brisbane we looked dead on our feet, fitness clearly an issue but we did have about 3 games in 16 days including a week in a hotel. Carlton we were awful but built back into. West Coast we looked ok, we tried, they just did everything better.

10 goals from turnover for them, 1 for us.

In a game style where that stat matters that's game over right there.

And scores from turnovers is what wins you flags.

You can burry your head in the sand, attack other supporters for their pessimism, but barring an absolute gift from god, we are done. There is no denying it now. Expect an absolute savage assessment by the media - and so they should, that was an indefensible loss to a team that finished dead last last year. Let that sink in.

I get your frustration but we didn’t lose it at selection

by your own admission Fullarton wouldn’t have been the difference

Mate, I totally agree with you about the ultimate Match result. Fullarton wasn’t going to win the game for us.

My concern is that the β€˜ Non Selection’ was a sign of a deep seated attitude within the Match commitee.

And whilst I’m very disappointed with the result, I’m not frustated. I’m much more concerned with the implications for the rest of the year. At the very least it shows the just how beatable we are.

That said, I still think we are good enough to win the flag, but a change of attitude, both on and off the field, will be required.

Time to hang up the boots Ben. Very disappointing past three games. Just lumbers about and barely breaks a mild jog.

West Coast: 99 minutes for 3 touches, 1 goal and 1 tackle.

Brisbane: 97 minutes for 4 touches, 1 goal and 0 tackles.

Adelaide: 82 minutes for 5 touches, 0 goals, and 1 tackle.

That doesn't really make any sense? What are your parameters here?

We were awful against Brisbane (but we use a travel excuse), Carlton we were awful for 3 quarters (but because we did well in one quarter that undoes all before it). What about Round 1 against the Swans?

We can go in on some past season performances if you wish as well.

How were we awful in three quarters against Carlton? They smashed us in the first, then the 2nd and 3rd quarters were dead level.

Well I can't imagine that's directed at me because I agree. Today was very telling and showed an underbelly that I thought had been dead a long time.

I thought the loss to Essendon in Gather Round last year was a critical loss but this one, it won't be forgotten quickly.

Jordon is clearly one of the best taggers in the game. DubDee can't shake off the rosy red and blue glasses.

One of my biggest gripe with Goodwin is he's refusal to tag gun players. Tim Kelly tonight was unbelievable and barely anyone went with him. It's cost us games.

Goody is too arrogant to even realise that he should have at least tried Jordon as a tagger last year after the success we had with Harmes back in 2018 before trading him off.

So what you’re saying is, is Goodwin the right guy

Like Britney sang, ooops I did it again

You could say the same today against the Eagles, we didn't get blown out in qtr 2 and 3.

They had the answers though and controlled the game right up until the last 8 minutes.

I'm done with arguing about last week's game but the reality is we were no-where near as good in that game as people give us credit for.

Reminded me a lot of the match against Essendon last year during Gather Round.
Opposition playing well and our entire line up looking off the pace.

It’s not yet a pattern but we’re yet to string enough consistent performances together to be counted as a threat.

We’re a finals team but not sure how much further than that.

Hopefully soon Wiz. I can't understand why he doesn't. When we're struggling, why not. Petty and Mac can play both forward and back. Swap em when we're struggling. TMac won us the game against WC in 2017 (the first in ages) with his famous - Tom McDonald YOU GENIUS goal:

We have the players who can play multiple positions - perhaps a little more lateral thinking and switching things up when things aren't going to plan will provide a change of fortune in games that aren't going to plan. Go Dees.

Fullarton should have played tonight not BBB, that would have allowed Petty to go back and try to curb their attack and he would have provided a chop out for Max.

1000%

Whether it would have mattered but regardless the decision to play Brown ahead of Fullo always looked to be a very poor one.

We dominated the 2nd half last week and played some great football. Our mids still have it but for whatever reason are just a bit off.

We had some guys really give it a crack tonight but beaten by a much better side. We still played well in some patches though.

Fair play to WCE & Simpson, they had a plan for Max, blocked him perfectly. Goody got it wrong today, could have tried something else but they didn't have an alternate. But am not with the OTT criticism of the coach, Simpson got one over him, I'm not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. As a coach he's tried a new game-plan, he has a good track record in this department, especially after his blitz was thrown in the bin by 6-6-6, we're struggling with cattle to execute, but those cattle were Wagyu beef, and have recently turned into something Jack would sell for magic beans. Also e are taking our turn with the injury stick at the moment, I can't see Waterman kicking 5 if Lever plays all game. Likewise JVR being out hurt us. Also look at how many blokes have been given a chance this year, there is a mini rebuild going on right now, give it a chance.

Billings has shown glimpses all year, but we now have a definitive sample size to say not best 22, (which is a shame I was hopeful) not excited about Hunter coming back either. Langdon please come home.

Lever was a kick in the guts, I would have liked to see Rivers swap to Rick's role instead of the run and carry that was frankly like Hunt on a bad day.

Oliver is having an annus horribilis, at least he's still with the club, so many guns have had a bad year (Stephen Coniglio etc), let's not reach for the bolt gun just yet. These midfield issues are compounded by Gus of course, that was hardly a Goodwin coaching booboo. I am ready to trade Sparrow ATM, have been reviewing previous seasons, and I feel like he out of the current team, has a touch of bathwater gin. Needs to get his head right fast, and he needs to trim up.

Petty is having a bad run with injuries, this has happened to cream like Cameron can we give a bloke a chance to get right. Watch the 21 Finals series again, in fact any of the matches from 21/22, he was a stone killer, 23 finished badly, people knocking him have recency bias. Not saying he's Cameron level, but Cameron had a couple of shocking years, didn't stop Geelong going all in.

Salem is looking better, going through thyroid issues atm, we were so close to losing him on medical grounds, we should all be saying thank you to the medical department.

Bowey has underwhelmed me for awhile now, I think his confidence is off. Anyone have a clue what is up there?

Tomlinson will be back I think, I liked how Marty Hore was coming along, hopefully he's ready soon

Lastly on JJ, we all knew he was good, but rightly he wanted a starting role, not professional sub, he was hardly shown the door, and based on 2021 Trac, Viney, Oliver and Sparrow (who has fallen far from his 2021) were all ahead of him.

We are not done yet, we have hit a rough patch, the effort/pressure rating  in the first half though was 220 (massive) the execution wasn't, so calm the farm, we are far from done. I still don't get those ready to right off the whole season, we're just barely halfway. I had us down for a 10 goal win so am filthy and frustrated.

Lastly nothing to do with today, but I think some of the frees we give away are coachable, there has been a shift and we're not reading the green right, this I think McQualter should be addressing, I don't want to be the new Richmond that gives up a ton of frees. Also we're staging a bit too much (hate to say it) this is killing the game and needs to end, As every teams is generally much sharper, people are looking for the smallest edges, we don't want to go down the soccer path. (stopping here as this could be a 1000 word rant)

Weekly request that Goodwin gives our best kick a crack in the midfield.  I know its not the game plan to kick it to the advantage of a leading player but it's kinda nice to watch every now and again.

No not for a moment mate. Was more of a general comment.

It was a great observation that I picked up one game team. I mean Schofield mentioned it like every 3 minutes.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
