  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Ben Brown (Key Forward  31yo  200cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

Ben has played four matches plus Rnd 4 vs the Crows before being subbed (for Woe) having played 68% game time.  One could argue this is almost a full game for Ben given his average game time of 84% so i have erred on the side of including him in this series.  His rating (and that of any other subbed players in these ratings) has been adjusted to allow for the lower than normal game time in Rnd 4.

Jacob Van Rooyen (Key Forward  21yo  193cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

JVR has played all 6 matches so far in 2024.

This is the final player to have played 5 matches or more in this early season review series.  I will look to revisit this series about mid season.  I might also add a review of each player's mid season rating against this early season rating as a bit of an in season form guide if time allows.

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.
  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.
  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.
  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Round 6, 2024 MCG - Tigers vs Demons

The ANZAC theme appeared to spill over into the game with a brutal "in the trenches" first half, followed with a decent salvo in the second.

Lever just pipped to the post by Maxy.  I reckon they both deserved the medal with Rick having a massive 15 intercepts.

Maysie back to his best and more!  Tracc did pretty well considering the tag and Rivers continuing on with his improved form as the season rolls on.

I believe there was some sort of Disco Inferno last night!  Let's take a look at the young fella's forward foray!

10 effectives % 76.9 (above AFL average at approx 74%), 1 contested mark, 4 marks inside 50, 2 one percenters, 6 inside 50s, 1 tackle inside 50, 1 intercept, 380 meters gained, only 2 turnovers, 3 sausage rolls and our No.1 rated forward.

Clarry still a long way off his 2023 (and prior) best but hopefully with another decent break he can recoup and come out all guns blazing against the Puddy Cats.  Viney also way off his usual standards in these last two matches and can hopefully regain some of his early season form soonish.  Chin a mile off his usual levels as well in this match.

Similar to the Lions match, our top six players had a VG night.  Eclipsing their 2023 average rating by over 8%.  The bottom six not so good, still a long way down on the 2023 rating by a hefty 37%.  An improvement vs the Lions result though, where they were a massive 61% off the 2023 average.

Thanks DD I know that we are playing the long game to be better at the tail end of the season but we are performing below where we need to be to be more competitive. The next two weeks will tell the story, do we have to many kids in the mix, when do we introduce Fullarton, McAdam and Hunter into the side?? After watching GWS tonight they have the tools and the talent to bat very deep again this year.

After watching GWS tonight they have the tools and the talent to bat very deep again this year.

The best rated offence going at the moment.

Their "all ground" defence laat season was right up there also.

Their weakness this year is their defence vs the counter attack where they're rated the worst.

They're also the 4th worst team at defending the turnover behind North, West Coast and the Bombers.

The Pies have also changed up their pressure / turnover focus this season.

They've gone from focussing on turnover and their damaging sling shot counter attack off HB last year, to more of a forward half 'score off turnover' style so far this season.  Rated only 2nd behind thr Blues in this area.

They're presently rated 18th from scoring off back half turnovers this season!

Port are the 5th easiest team to score against when the ball goes inside their D50.  Only North are worse at winning ground ball in their D50.

Their ground ball defense in D50 vs the Pies was the 2nd worst performance ever recorded by Champion data in their 25 years of monitoring.

Might explain how the Pies were able to come back so well last week.

Lastly, the Bombers, while rated 13th in getting first possession, are rated the 2nd best team at stripping the ball off the oppo and clearing the ball so far.

After yesterday's performance i would under rate them at your peril.  Starting to get their act together.

Dees are listed as

- bottom 4 disposal efficiency

- below AFL avg contested possessions

 bottom 6 in contested possessions

- bottom 4 handball efficiency

- bottom 4 centre clearances

- below afl avg inside 50s

unbelievable that we are not the contest kings as other clubs have lifted their smarts and intensity in the middle and at stoppage

But we are strong in

- leading intercept marks

- average points against (66) is the lowest

Our Defence is Very Very Good

Our midfield is just average right now

Our forward line is still a 15 year work in progress

Thanks Norm.  A few uglies in there.

On that last point we may have found one in Disco and there's only upside ahead with the Petty role, where we've basically been a KF down up forward given his disastrous form so far.

Yes i realise he's coming from a long way back after a double set back but having him playing at such a low ebb is a big price for the team to carry at this level.

If Petty can improve over the next few weeks, even by 10% to 20% that would be something.  I just hope it doesn't cost us in a big way against the top liners if he doesn't.

On another positive note.... post the 2023 bye, we were ranked 17th in moving the ball (transition) off HB into the 50.  So far this season we are ranked No.3

That's a massive improvement and shows we are probably in the early phase of adjusting to a significant change up in game style.  It would appear we are looking to bring the ball out with some precision to HB and then sling shot from there vs the traditional dump down the line we witnessed for the most part of 2022 & 2023.

Bringing the ball out to just over 50 or so before attempting to slingshot quickly forward also means that if we turn the ball over it's potentially a bit more easier to defend vs a quick dump kick that is roughly a 50/50 outcome at ground level and as a result is often coming straight back in from around the arc?

I think where the change may begin to fall down is vs a very good pressure side that pushes up high and makes it difficult for us to slice and dice our way out of the square or deep in defence up to about 50 through to the wing before launching.

Not that that's a revelation in itself.  It's been pretty obvious since Rnd 2 and many have spoken about it over the weeks since.  I believe there was even mention of a change coming during the pre-season.  But the above improvement confirms that this change is definitely happening and the effort and results are now showing.

You need some decent speed on the exit as well as post getting it to the launch spot and sling shoting.

Harder to do vs higher level opponents or lessor ones having a day out?

Works a gem against lessor opponents who don't bring as much pressure or don't push so high?

We possibly turn it over more and don't look so good against the former.  Which is a given and why the better opps are rated as such.

Unless of course we improve in this change up with continued practice and improved disposal accuracy as the season goes on!

The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Round 7, 2024 MCG - Demons vs Cats

King Clarry returns, stonewall May does it again and a rookie steps up on the big stage!

A big statement win fellow minions.

The top 6 really gave us a boost with a +16% rating vs the (top 6) 2023 season rating.  What a performance given the quality of the oppo.

Early days and would want to see a few follow up performances but it would appear the finger operation has had the desired effect with King Clarry turning the clock back, eclipsing his 2023 average rating by 5% against the top of the table Cats for a No.1 result alongside May.

Maysie take a bow.  What a performance from the champ down back.  One of his best ratings in the red and blue.  His best ever against the Giants in Rnd 5, 2022 where he posted a 5.675  Not far off that and against a serious contender speaks volumes and 64% up on his 2023 H&A season rating.

Lever easily one of our best, if not the best on the night (alongside Maxy), coming in in the No.4 spot.  55% improvement on his 2023 rating.  Outstanding.

T-Mac.  Took the chocolates in the Cameron stoush.  Super stuff from our veteran warrior.  Not his best rating for the season though.  That was against the Lions with an impressive 4.275  Probably still his best for the year though given the assignment and the result where he kept a rampaging Cameron (from previous weeks) to zero goals.

Caleb's break out game for those who aren't taking much notice outside of supporters and the four walls?  Doubt many imagined him hitting such heights so early in the season.  If you did i tips me hat!  Let's have a squiz at the numbers from the young colt...

15 Effectives @ 83% efficiency (AFL average approx 74%), 1 mark inside 50, 2 one percenters, 1 clearance, 1 rebound, 3 inside 50s, 6 tackles (One of those the fab, chase down inside 50.  Equal best for us alongside Viney & ANB.  Atkins the most on the night with a massive 11), 9 score involvements (equal best for both teams alongside Tracc!), 8 intercepts, 309 meters gained, 1 goal and a miserly 2 turnovers.

Have to say that is a 'Clarryesque' type performance in his rookie year (obviously in a 'winger role' not in a mid field sense).

Maxy, well what can you say that hasn't already been said.  Another outstanding Captains game from the champ and although his rating doesn't indicate such i would say right up there with May & Lever as BOG.  Certainly close to MVP anyway yes?

Can't leave knuckles McVee out either.  Posting a rating that's 100% up on his 2023 average is incredible.  Including 19 effectives running at 90% and a massive 11 intercepts - the equal 2nd best on the night (Guthrie 11), just behind Lever (12).

Bring on the baggers!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
