Look at that -21 for ground balls stat. Crazy how that stat has become so inconsequential to how we play.

There's an interesting potential correlation with the loose ball gets as per wheelos terrific addition to his stats.

Melbourne's Forward 50

Loose Ball Gets: -14

Post clearance

Loose ball gets: -19

Pre clearance

Loose Ball Gets: -3

I suspect one of the causal factors driving the post clearance, inside our forward 50 and the ground ball numbers, is the Lyon defensive flood.

They often seemed to have at least a couple of extra players defending our forward line.

Agreed DD. To the eye many can see he's not right. What does the data tell us in how much 'off' he really is. I don't know where to even look. There's the obvious raw disposals, but that is never really a great indicator. what we are looking for is his ability to impact games. He was never big on scoring involvements (from memory that was Tracs area), but his CP, defensive acts, clearances, i50s were telltale signs of his impact on games.

The fact that taggers are going to Trac instead of Oliver is telling enough.

The rating is a rough to fair indicator Gawndy.

Afrer next round, time allowimg, i'll be doing a review of anyone who's played 10 rounds or more this season.

A form comparison of how they went in the first 5 to 6 rounds vs the last 5 to 6.

And also how they're travelling vs their entire 2023 results.

With regard to Clarry there are the aspects you mentioned.  And then there's his ability to drive legs out and away from congestion (spread?), then dispose the pill with reasonable effectiveness.

When we see some decent numbers coming through on the grunt side such as those you mentioned (which we're starting to see in his last month or so), then the latter happening a fair bit, we are then getting in to the realms of the Clarry of old that can help win matches and turn games.

If that happens we will have "take off" for season 2024 imv with anything possible from there.

What do you put this down to Binman? Not enough skill when we turn it over? Not generating enough turnovers in the first place or in areas where we want them?

A couple of factors come to mind.

A key one is having 2 of our 3 best kicks - salem and bowey - out of the side for a big chunks of time.

That iss compounded by both players being half back flankers, the engine room for creating high quality scoring opportunities on turnover and transition.

Given the key role elite distributors play in the turnover game, its no surprise we look much better on transition with those two in the side.

I think another factor is that we have a number of players who ate not great kicks.

And perhaps the biggest factor is we are trying to implement a new system, which will always be a challenge, particularly for a team that is so systems based, and one that has a super defined system drilled into them for 3 plus years.

The swans are the deserved benchmark for the turnover game

But I think it's worth noting that they have been using that method for the last 2 seasons and are the most settled team in the AFL in terms of forced changes.

Consider the impact if they lost 2 of their 3 best kicks that are key to their transition game - say blakely and gulden.

This makes sense. It surprised me yesterday though given we played a higher line, so ground ball gets against had the potential to cut us open, but didn't.

Yep, let's see how they're looking come September for personnel and game style.

Their kicking was woeful in the main.

And it seemed as if we dared them to take on the corridor and the saints refused the invite.

That said, 54 of their 66 points were from turnover. That's nuts.

That's only 4 points less than we scored from turnover. And is nearly 11 points more than we concede per match on average.

I can't imagine that number pleased goody.

How we defend from turnover is something we need to focus on a bit more. It’s a corollary of how we’re changing how we move the ball and how we set up, but St Kilda are a poor side and still had too much ease in moving the ball from D50 or the back half and score.

Round 11, 2024 MCG - Demons vs Saints

Our second best Team Rating for the year behind Rnd 1 vs the Doggies (72.4) and beating our 2023 Rating (69.9) by 1%.

Our top 6 a massive 22% improvement on the 2023 average with the bottom 6 again struggling.  Somewhat of a worry given the quality of the opposition.

Big Max ...BIG game!  Since inputing data on hit outs to advantage (2022) this is easily Max's highest rated game.

Daylight the rest.

The last time a player rated higher in a match for the red & blue was Clarry's performance in the 2022 Qualifying Final vs the Swans with a massive 7.3

Keep in mind that any mid-field or follower's player rating of 7.0+ is quite rare and indicative of an uber elite performance.  Clarry had two Ratings of 7+ in 2022.  The other was against the Kangas in Rnd 10 with a 7.67

Petracca the only other for the 2022 season in the opening round vs the Doggies with a mega 7.35

Clarry has now pretty much matched or bettered his 2023 season rating in three out of the last four games.  His only slightly off game against the Blues two weeks ago.  Fingers crossed, great signs.

Some excellent / solid results from many.  Salem in particular i believe that's his highest rating in some time.  I would love to say how long but don't have the time right at the moment to troll through the records.  His 2023 season rating is a fair indicator of where he usually falls though, so a 40% improvement from him is substantial and his best for the season.

JVR's second best outing for the year behind his Rnd 2 game against the Hawks (2.72) and a 23% improvement on season 2023.  Let's hope he can keep that going.

Tracc's performance also substantial given the heavy tag yes?

Kozzy spending major minutes in the middle.  More than 60% over his 2023 attendance and 41% more time than his usual time in 2024.  The FD must be liking what they are seeing here and/or finally believe his tank and impact playing through here is starting to really pay dividends.

Nibbla also way up on his average CBA vs last season and this season.  The FD must be happy with what they're seeing here as well.  I also love the idea of more mid time for Nibbla as it means we are more likely to see him improving our connection with forwards given he is rated as our most damaging player with the last kick inside 50.

Salem zero attendances vs 10 last week.

JVR taking over Petty's CB ruck duties from last week following his return from concussion protocols.  Petty taking just the one ruck contest up forward.

Some very handy data here each week thanks @wheeloratings!

Wow, 74% CBA for Kozzie. Looks like his CBAs have largely come at the expense of Sparrow, suggesting the coaches are concerned about our need for more pace in the middle.

I was also surprised by the player ratings for Langdon and Hunter - I thought they were both decent and didn’t expect them in the bottom four.

That is so true SONS but we were basically playing short, Harrison Petty and Shane McAdam couldn’t get amongst it, badly need that extra KPF with good hands. 14.16  and at least 4 out on the full plus not taking full advantage of our players that were free and in good position in the forward 50.

15 marks inside 50 is pretty good for us overall, but with those sort of i50 numbers we should be taking a couple more ideally. Saints took 12 with much fewer i50s.

Hopefully McAdam and Petty can start taking a couple, we need to be breaking 100 more regularly towards the end of the year.

The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 12, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

This season's Team Rating is still holding up.

Season is still potentially recoverable in terms of making finals but we'll need to get so much more out of the middling group and especially our bottom 6 players, whoever they are each week.  And of course the mid field regulars who are up and down like a yo yo and be very selective about who else runs through there.  Sparrow & Clarry a fair way off this season plus Viney for a few rounds after the Crows has really impacted.

My suggestion for some positional & personnel changes FWIW...

Consider pushing Rivers into the mid field for some serious minutes but only once Marty Hore is fully fit and ready to share his role off the bench (trial run).

RIvers the stand out of all the bit part wanna be mids we've tried to run through there so far this season, albeit off a very low sample size, so not extremely confident this would work either.  Worth a trial run though!?

Petty simply has to come out for JVR.  That's a no brainer this week against the Pies who will look to fully expose such weaknesses in form.

And speaking of weaknesses i would consider taking Smacca out for KB and ask him to work on his fitness / strength over the next four to six week block while at Casey.  It's not AFL standard.  Same with Petty.

Push Sparrow forward just for this week to cover the Smacca role.  Then consider Jeffo for the Kangas depending on how he goes at Casey.  Coming in for Sparrow in that match.  Sparrow as sub.  Again depending on how Sparrow goes also vs the Pies.

KB a great opportunity to see who will stand up and is capable, willing and fully fit / in form going into the second half of the season post the bye.

Woey comes in for Hunter.

Chandler is shot.  Another horror performance on the weekend and continuing on with his massive drop away post about Rnd 5.  He must be still hampered with that knee / leg issue and it's showing big time.

Moniz comes in to take on that role and bring the forward pressure which is sadly lacking other than Kozzy.  Who unfortunately is not playing enough time forward to impact in his usual manner here and probably pretty spent when he does from playing a fair chunk in the middle.

Therefore he simply isn't able to bring his usual F50 heat and crumbing goals.  His one percenters are down 33% on 2023, inside 50 tackles down almost half by 49% and average goals since his return from suspension in Rnd 7 (vs his first four rounds) are down a massive 42%!  Coming off a high base of 2 per match in the first four rounds which makes his season average look alot better than it is of late.. only 7% off his 2023 average which is deceiving.

Rivers for some of Kozzy's mid minutes helps alot here and also with some speed / spread on the outside from 666 & mid field stoppages.  With no one else providing much of that other than Tracc and to a lessor degree Viney on occasions this season.

Thanks DD the numbers tell the story our top 6 are holding up but our bottom 6-8 players have been well down all year, need to be more ruthless, don’t reward poor efforts, swing the axe as soon as they lose form. We can absorb 4 changes on a weekly basis when they are performing so poorly. Really surprised with Sparrow he is way off his best.

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders

Judd McVee (Medium Defender  20yo  185cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Juddy has played all 12 matches so far in 2024.

He's had a great start to the season with his overall rating up an impressive 29% from 2023

Only dropping off a little as the season's progressed by approx 7%.

His positives given his role... rebounds, intercepts, meters gained and turnovers have all improved.

In general terms his disposal efficiency is also up 5% on 2023.  Of course it should be high given the position he's playing but a 5% improvement is still better than going south, especially given the inconsistency with some of our performances.

Has moved up a massive 11 places in the Team rankings from a fringe 22nd last season into 11th spot to date and is now one of our most consistent performers!

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Defenders

Christian Salem (Medium Defender  28yo  184cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 10 to 12   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Salo played the first 5 rounds before ending up injured in the 6th* very early in the match vs the Lions with a hamstring.  He returned six weeks later in Rnd 10 and has played three games in succession so far.  We should keep this in mind when reviewing his results.

He opened the season in very similar fashion / form to his 2023 season.  Since his return from injury in Rnd 10 he appears to have ratcheted his game to another level.  This is probably also indicative of his time spent in the mid field in certain matches.  Running through the mid field a little appears to have resulted in more turnovers due to the increased pressure?

His disposal efficiency has also improved substantially on 2023.  However that may not be all positive if he is not taking many risks with his kicks etc and instead playing a little too safe too often with short easy 'pressure relieving' kicks that don't necessarily benefit the team or the style we are trying to implement.

The one disappointing aspect since Rnd 10, pressure has gone south.  Particularly tackles, down substantially.  That could also be a positive meaning he is not chasing as much tail and instead getting to the ball first though.  Numbers can be deceiving.

My gut feel is that Salem's game in general is not attacking enough in terms of bursting out of stoppage / congestion.  Or that when he does attempt to do so and/or try longer kicks, he is turning the ball over more often?  And then reverts back to playing the safer but less effective (at times) short dinky sideways game.  I could be wrong and just imagining things though.

Player Rating Review - Defenders

Trent Rivers (Medium Defender  22yo  188cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Rivers set a high bar in 2023.  That was always going to be hard to maintain.  Started a little ways off that bar.  He's improved in some areas but dropped away in others.  Contested possessions & intercepts both down 25% on 2023.

His last 6 matches would appear to indicate his form has dropped away even further than his opening 6 rounds.  Although Meters gained is def on the up.  Trying to be more attacking on the rebound or kicking it longer vs the first 6 rounds?

I would really love to see Rivers trialed with some more mid field minutes from here IF we can cover him off with either Turner and/or Marty when he returns?  When he came into the middle for Clarry against the Lions i thought he really gave us something.  He may well be the extra rotation needed at this point and may benefit from the change up!

Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
