AFLW: Rd 04 vs Hawthorn

Featured Replies

Regardless of age division, sex, or any other line of delineation, the Dees AFLW are simply playing great footy that is good to watch. I look forward to grabbing some Arnott's shapes and a cider, and sitting to watch them play.

Paxman, Hore, Hanks. Harris, all in great form, and all very skilfull.

Loving to watch the Mackin sisters play. Their transition to AFL can't be underestimated.

But it is Bannon and Mithen who I watch. Bannon for her jet speed, and Mithen for her workrate and defensive pressure.

I know our men's team petered out, but honestly to see our mens, womens and Casey teams all playing finals reminds me to acknowledge the rare air of these days - it is good to be a Dees supporter right now.

You can 'roll' out the obverse again on Thursday, W 😁

It was good, by the way, that they had a go at a narrow ground yesterday, as preparation for that other 'K' Park on Thursday. Eliza McNamara noted the issue, and how they dealt with it, in her post match.

And did you notice who kicked their goal? Little fist pump?😉

Sneaky little fist-pump, while no one was looking  😁

Also, the Mackin family will be in attendance this week all the way from the motherland.  🥳 What a proud family they’d be.

Side Note- I wish they would fix that long sleeve jumper- just looks wrong.

I'd thought that, too, GM; the red yoke should go across the width of the shoulders if it's to match the traditional guernsey.

However, see my post now on the Votes thread: another angle, shall we say?

Holy smoke they're playing great footy.
So clean and fast with hands through traffic.
Would kill for a male version of Hanks for the midfield.
She's always been good but what a gun she's become.

So would I. Her ability to step out of traffic and find a target is pretty much unparalleled in the women’s game. In the future I wonder if we could ever see a male draftee profiled like this?

Name: Joe Bloggs, 18

Position: Midfielder, Sandringham Dragons

Strengths: Clean hands, elite kick, very high footy IQ, possible future AFL captain

Plays like: Tyler Hanks

I don't like bagging the boys. They've been great but a male equivalent of Hanks changes the game for us. Scott Pendlebury probably the closest comparison i can think of. Always has time and space. Rarely wastes it (although age catching up with him this year)

Reckon she's more dynamic than Pendlebury.
Harder at it.
These days Pendlebury plays like he knows he going home to a $16M mansion with a holiday to the Greek Islands in a couple weeks for some instagram content.

I'm thinking Gary Ablett Jnr.

I liked the venue. The timing was fine. Lots of kids. I've never been there before and it was pretty and the afternoon sun held a little warmth, before the night closed in and it got very cold.

I felt privileged to go and watch the girls. They are a brilliant team. There is a strong chance (touch wood no mozzez) that they'll go through undefeated. They are a beautifully balanced team with a number of stars on every line. Their tall stocks are the envy of the league, their midfield has so much depth and their wildcard players aren't just role players, they are better than that. Kate Hore is an absolute star of the competition.

Just a note on the umpiring. I thought it was really good. The girls at this stage of the competition take pretty good care of one another. There are very few snipers out there. None on Melbournes team. So if everyone is trying to play the game properly as they mostly are , the need for over umpiring falls away and really they mostly let the girls sort things out and just balled it up when needed. I reckon there may have been as few as 15 - 20 frees payed, with an increase in the last quarter when the game got a bit ratty. It was a good spectacle.

Well done girls. Keep it going. You can set some records that will stand for a long time.

The Hawks are a product of Bec Goddard and very lucky to have such a knowledgeable and experienced coach.
Didn't like her with Adelaide ( very abrupt I felt) but credit where it's due she has this group while vastly inferior along their beginners trail you can see the discipline and skills some girls have already learnt  at this stage of one and a half seasons.

Also the standard of play is improving dramatically. Our team is up there with the Adelside and Brisbane  teams of Season 1-7 now ( actually past them but tough to beat like them and no passengers) . Just advhoog to watch also.

Their  Captain Tilly Lucas -Rodd is a bit if a stirrer snd is as physical as her slight but tough frame allows. No doubt plays her role as an example to not let bigger and more senior classy teams lord over her young charges. Typically an unsocial Hawk really.

Mick Stear now thst he has a forward line and 30good players to use is a superb coach snd the team and Shia Sloane also are so much a product of 7 years in the system. All credit are we had a lot against us in early seasons but our grounding and lessons are the reason we are the Champs  at the moment. Great flexibility and all the skills to rely on.

Too bad we are not at all play wise  missing Daisy ( How the other teams hoped we would ) but we also learnt well off her smarts and team and Club ethos) ( Best Ch 7 commentator pity you have to put up with that  BT ).

Can't  wait till we play North Brisbane and Crows snd Cats to see how our game stacks up.

I reckon: The Dees boys did 17 in a row so go beat those wins in a row?

Which Tayla has almost done on an individual level, pretty good!

She really stands out in this league with her ability to pick the ball of the ground cleanly. Sounds simple, but it puts her ahead of many. She's so balanced with that low centre of gravity. Love how she steps back to find the space then kicks with vision, often into space at a leading player's advantage.

A few years ago people often mistook her for a "Tayla". Not so many getting the "Tyla" wrong these days!

Said to my daughters and wife during the game, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 aaaaaand 7! That's seven kicks in a row straight to our own team mate who barely had to move to take the easy chest mark, I haven't seen our boys do that in a long time. Best bit most of the kicks were under some kind of pressure, not just chipping it around in the backline.

Absolutely loving the skills out of our women's team at the moment, the direct ball movement and the joy they show playing the game we love. They are without doubt providing so much more joy for my family than the men!

Cause they're playing with some exciting attacking flair instead or boring us/me to death with the defence 1st ethic.

You are on the money Dees in Oct AFLW Dees  to beat AFL Dees of 17 wins in a row.

Sorry to disagree Fork (soz not soz), they absolutely have a defence 1st ethic, you only need to watch Banno get back to the last line of defence or listen to Macca in her interview.

They are well coached, practiced and implement what they have been taught. They would be an absolute delight to be involved with and are loving the game and their teammates, long may it continue.

On a a different note; anyone who hasn't watched the singing of the song after the Hawks win, do yourself a favour and watch it. I think it says everything you need to know about our women's team.

GO DEES!!!

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
