That’s nuts! But then, considering our current form, and having made short work of them in the *practice match, it shouldn’t really be a surprise.

*I felt sorry for the Hawks players that day. I spoke to a few of them after the match and they were actually in good spirits, happy to be playing at all, is what they said.

Surprised Bannan got up. i initially thought there was some concussion in that incident

On Aimee am I correct in saying she is more of an fwd unlike her sis? we could do with a good user at HF

Hawks haven’t been blown away and results are solid. i don’t expect a blow out especially at night in Frangers

Hopefully Maddy Gay is purely precautionary, but it makes sense to give players such as Gay and Pearce a rest against the weaker sides to ensure they are available when we need them most.

Good luck to Aimee Mackin for her debut game. Dees to win by 40 points plus.

Maddi’s omission is 100% precautionary. 👍🏽 She could’ve played tonight but they decided to give her the extra week, because they can.

She’ll be back for sure on Thursday.

Aimee is even more decorated a player than Blaithin, which is really saying something. I’m thinking she’ll play forward and I’ve heard she’s a dead-eye-dick. 🥳❤️💙

Yep. Per her post-selection interview (see OP), in her own words she's been 'in and around the half forward line...trying to create scores for the girls in front'.

Looking at her Gaelic footy vision, if she's made the transition from round to oval ball, her delivery skills shouldn't be a problem!

It’s Prelim time in the AFL, and I’ll be taking a close interest in both matches, but nearly as much interest as I’ll be taking in Melbourne vs Hawthorn in the AFLW.  Go Dees!!

Absolutely pumped! On my way to Frankghanistan now and I really could do with a T-shirt that says “Yes, Melbourne are still in it, in the AFLW, anyways.” 🙄

It does attract wordplays, doesn't it,  often of the salty variety. DubDee's of an hour ago, innocently Aussie, is a mistake I once made in refeened company. Never again!

Who starts a game at 5pm on a Friday?

Surely 6pm would have been better for fans to attend or tune in.

Also, this means there'll also be a heaps of Hawthorn kids tune in and this may not be a (PG) result.

They may get scarred, swap clubs and barrack for Melbourne and then eventually follow our men's side and be tortured for the majority of their life!

Just (half) joking

That betting line makes me nervous!

Some more about our debutant: Aimee earnt her a senior football (soccer) debut for Northern Ireland at 16, before she switched to focus on Gaelic and was voted best in the league in 2020. The 26-year-old arrived in Australia last month with a hamstring tear and was unavailable for the practice games but has earned her call-up after three weeks of full training.

And the stats on the venue and oppo:

It's Melbourne's first game against the Hawks and first game at Frankston.
Hawthorn's Frankston win-loss record: 2-2
Hawthorn's 2023 formline: The Hawks have started the year with 2 losses and 1 win, with the latter coming against the Bulldogs in Round 2.

Will probably be a bit of wind about. I won't know because, dedicated to this team as I am, Friday at 5pm in Frankston is a bridge too far!

Already heaps of people here. Heaps of Dees. ❤️💙

I bet they were happy. Theyre getting 70-150k? next year to play a handful of footy games while holding down fulltime jobs. They''ll pay off a house in no time.

They must be rapped. Easy.

Why Frankston? 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️

I know she’s one of your favourite players but I have to agree. She’s been poor

The other Mackins first game of footy. Unbelievably talented.

Aimee Mackin doing well. Looks like we’ve found another gem.

Hawthorn’s choice.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.

The Demons are finally back at the MCG and finally back on the winners list as they continually chipped away at a spirited Kangaroos side eventually breaking their backs and opening the floodgates to run out winners by 6 goals.
