Culture makes it's own luck

It's a bit of a cliche for our club. We were very unlucky with everyone of our fwds having injuries. A lot of them affecting their seasons. Milk was desperate replacement who surprisingly showed great form. Losing him was a big deal.

Yes   but culture / attitude finds a way to deal with challenges/ luck.

The All Black team culture got them to a bees whisker of the Springboks in the World Cup playing one short for half the game.

They blew a few chances, they  got some bad referee calls, but luck ( or Maynard)has not been mentioned.

And none of the coaches or staff are blathering on about culture....because its there for all to see.

Some might say there is a learning there

Like the Dee's eh?

Mind you they've won a lot more since 1964

You're just a try hard pal, according that nonsense response the only AFL  winners are the Collingwood Football Club.

Rubbish, nothing is perfect, but continuous improvement should be the goal.

Not sure if mentioned elsewhere but the entire team went and served food at a place for the homeless on Monday. Appears ‘operation humility’ is underway and I quite like that it hasn’t been widely reported and isn’t being leveraged as a PR exercise.

The AFL have been aligned with homelessness agencies for decades. I suggest the club is doing their bit as other clubs do and have for many many years.

If you were very old, you would know that that comment should be directed to Joyce (aka Rosie Sturgess).

I am old*, but it was slightly before my time.

I think I need to adjust my medication.

David Rennick, one of our Board members and all-round nice guy, is the CEO of MCM (Melbourne City Missions), a charity organisation that combats homelessness in Melbourne. He slept with us at Sleep at the ‘G this year and his passion for the cause is undeniable and very admirable. (Just quietly, we were the only AFL club to have an organised group of members participating.) *puts trumpet down*

Also, the players do a lot of stuff that goes ahead without publicity. They are oftentimes called upon at short notice in their spare time and they always oblige.

edit: there’s a special event this Saturday morning…

We found out yesterday the entire playing group is participating.

Accuracy.

I'm sure there are a million and one other factors to consider but if you take a study of the last 3 years, our 2023 season was the second costliest behind Adelaide's 2023 season, based on the metric of having more scoring shots than the opposition but losing.

We had 5 games this year where we outscored the opposition but still lost the game. As a poster mentioned earlier, we had 8 more scoring shots than GWS in Alice as well as Carlton in the semi. Not only are these numbers unacceptable, but they're unsustainable for the opposition to rely on our gross inaccuracy. To outscore the opposition twice by 8 shots and lose both times is a complete outlier and won't happen next year IMO. If we lose the same games or more next year, it will be due to simply being outplayed rather than inaccuracy.

In the last 3 years, Adelaide (in 2023) had the most games of outscoring the opposition but losing the game (think of their heartbreakers against Collingwood) and they did this 6 times, one more than us. This suggests to me that they're coming like a bullet next year if they tidy up their accuracy, which they will. As mentioned we had 5 games where we outscored the oppo but lost the game. In 2021 and 2022 this only occurred twice (key games included the Brisbane 2022 semi final and the Adelaide game in 2021 where we lost by a point).

In 2021 GWS did this 3 times and in 2022 Essendon and the Dogs did it 3 times. This proves that our 5 performances this year where we outscored the oppo but lost are hopefully an outlier, and if we do fail to take the next step it will be due to other inherent issues.

When the whips were cracking, we more often than not crumbled under the pressure. I reckon our fear of losing became greater than our desire to win. An unrelenting mindset like back in 2021 is what's needed for us to get back to our best.

2021 Melbourne would crush 2023 Melbourne with their continual pressure and ruthlessness.

I don't know why, but I thought it might be a good idea to watch the second half of the Semi loss to Carlton. Put quite simply we were very unlucky to lose that game. Ask any Carlton fan with half a brain (hard to find) and I'm sure they would admit they were lucky to pinch it as well. Couple of costly misses including a poster from Kozzie.

That was basically without a key forward to kick "down-the-line" to as well.

Some luck with injury, a few new additions, and a more central, quicker ball movement approach and I'm confident we can be there at the pointy end again.

100%. We were very unlucky to lose against the Blues. 2023 was an unlucky year with injuries at the wrong time.

What happens in the last game against the Cats in 2021 if Close doesn’t punch the ball over the fence?
Sometimes you have the luck and sometimes everything goes against you.
