Probably didn’t deserve to be that close, but annoying none the less. We were well beaten around the ball in the first and the last. 
 

Rucks - Grundy good in the ruck contests but really didn’t offer much follow up which is odd. Verrall developing well and played a solid game for a first year ruck. KFW - not sure how much of the game he played after the first quarter. 
 

Mids - Dunstan is very good, just not creative. Woey fine without being outstanding. AMW pinched hit. Jefferson looked good on a wing, still a forward, but it was good to see him up there. He didn’t really lead up on the stickers, more an outlet when needed. 
 

defenders - Adams best game I’ve seen. Dan Turner just so so so good. Giving away height and weight but didn’t look like it ever. Deakin Smith was his usual self, defended well, could have used it better. Kye Turner had some nice moments and looked like he had speed. 
 

forwards - Spargo was our best leading forward and did what he does well. We learned nothing about him this game. T Mac had one out the back, one contested mark goal (and other contested marks) and one free kick goal. Tackles well, but the large turning circle is the issue. 
 

we lacked one of a Harmes, Laurie or Jordan. I felt a decent decision maker in the middle (vfl level) was the difference.

Led to the ball really well at half forward and a few were contested too. He played well, but if he could kick off both feet he would have had a great day. Had to come back in to kick on his right 4 or 5 times which cost him a goal and probably a few goal assists. He played really well and put his hand up for next week.

Thought Toledo-Glasman showed real promise

Tough loss, bit of polish let them down.

Dan turner was outstanding and close to our best on ground.

Spargo was creative and a good link up player with limited options forward.

T-Mac was great, and had he not been playing we lose by 5 goals, he led up well created contests and took some important marks as well as 3 goals.

Grundy, he is a ruckman, but unfortunately we have to play him forward because if he is to get into the AFL side that where he will need to play.

Dunstan was his usual self just a great depth player

Woey had some great moments and some skill errors, is leaning and developing well.

Jefferson is developing well, he will get his marking and physical side of his game later but he is going to be a good mobile CHF i think

AMW had a quieter game, but is an exciting  19yo

Verrall is another one i like how he is developing, especially for a young Ruck.  he was soundly beaten by Fort who is an AFL lever ruck. but that was body work, his tap work looks good, once he learns how to hold his ground and position with a few pre-seasons in the gym, i think he will be good.

LAMENTING by KC from Casey 

The Casey Demons’ premiership defence continued its problematic end run with its third single digit figure defeat in a row on Sunday. 

The two-point loss to the Brisbane Lions was the more galling as it took place at the club’s home fortress after its early dominance had seen it build up a 33 point lead by early in the second term.

After going down to Carlton by 8 points and losing at home to Williamstown before the bye by a single point, Casey has fallen from being in top four calculations a month ago into seventh place and a wild card playoff against tenth placed North Melbourne (details to be announced) to remain in the finals race. 

The Demons looked to be well on top in the early going against the Lions and appeared to have shaken off last week’s goal front yips with seven goals from eight scoring shots. Tom McDonald was putting his hand up for an early recall to the Melbourne team with two first quarter goals, Brodie Grundy was winning the ruck duels and Luke Dunstan was raking up the possessions.

However, the Brisbane team regrouped and turned the game on its head after the ten minute mark of the second quarter booting 10.10 to 5.5 for the remainder of the game. 

By half time, the Lions had reduced the deficit to seven points and although the accurate Demons fought back in the third, they put the home team to the sword in the last on the back of a sturdy defensive effort in the last. They fought back with the only two goals of the term and edged ahead in the final desperate moments to score a couples of points that was enough to push themselves into the top four and leave their hosts lamenting.

For the Demons, Luke Dunstan was again their best player amassing his usual team-high number of disposals - this time 31 - to go with his six clearances and two goals. Casey’s old hands, Jimmy Munro (23 disposals and an incredible 14 tackles) and skipper Mitch White (24 touches, 2 goals) again led the team’s charge with their customary hardness at the football. 

The home team was also well served by Charlie Spargo with 23 possessions, 10 marks and a goal and newly re-signed Taj Woewodin continuing with his impressive forward trajectory with 20 touches as well as his goal which looked to spark a Demon revival early in the second half.

Grundy finished with 37 hitouts and a dozen disposals in a close battle with Darcy Fort while McDonald’s final tally of three goals should keep the Melbourne selectors minds engaged as they look to their best lineup coming into the finals.

The player of the most interest however, might well be unlucky defender Daniel Turner who returned from a break with injury and was right in the action with 25 touches and eight marks. Young key forward Matt Jefferson was busy early but faded. Michael Hibberd went off early after a head knock.

The game marked an impressive debut from young local player Ziggy Toledo-Glasman who moved well and kicked two goals.

In the end, the Demons can lament about wasting opportunities late in the season, but let’s face it — if you can’t kick a goal at home in the final quarter of a do or die game, you don’t deserve to win.

After the heartbreaking two point loss to the Brisbane Lions yesterday, the Casey Demons now find themselves in a do or die Wildcard Round clash.

Finishing in seventh place, the Demons enter the new format alongside Collingwood, Richmond and North Melbourne.

Casey will play North Melbourne on Sunday 27 August at 2:45pm at Casey Fields.

It is a win at all costs fixture with the losing team having their season end.

The winning side will continue into the traditional finals bracket where sixth place Footscray are waiting.

Prefer your sources were right.

Since Nth AFL play Saturday, the North VFL will have all AFL emergencies available, and their supporter base.

I would have thought, that the team above all the teams playing in VFL wildcard games, would gets the advantages.

Are we really helping Kyah Farris-White's development by giving him very limited game time against fully grown men? Surely he would be better served playing against kids his own age and size, and so he can get his hands on the footy a bit. 

It's great that he can train with the club and learn from Gawn & Grundy, but there is absolutely no need for him to play with Casey.

1st Half....

Casey was well on top until some severe clangers around the 10 to 20 minute mark of the second, in particular two by Kye Turner (free kick for a blatant push and a horrid kick into the corridor from a marking situation) plus the same corridor horror from Grey resulting in 3 goals to the Lions.

That gave them the sniff but they weren't alone.

Some other uncharacteristic but very poor turnovers from the likes of Munro & Hibb off HB didn't help during various times from about 10 min into the second.

Both players, but more so Hibb, over used the HB or short kick in congestion when a long kick down the line was the percentage option.

In addition it made no sense not to utilise the down-the-line option more often with Casey opting (for some reason) to play three lumbering talll rucks in Grundy, KFW & Verral.

I can understand playing two.  But three in the same side plus Macca & Jeffo up forward really is pushing your luck on the rotations front.  Leaving the team very likely to be over-run as the game wore on.

Jefferson also got pushed to a wing for a while which is not his usual thing if my memory serves me correct.

Even though he didn't do too badly at times, he also lost a fair share of crucial 1 v 1s allowing the Lions an easy transition into 50 while he was there.

Add to this Steele playing the other  wing on occasions (sharing with Spargo) where he's more often coming off HB.  Great endeavour & attack from Roan (as always) but also a bit of a  turnover king, adding to the release of pressure on the Lions that was happening across HB.

Also Casey often utilises Woe between CBs and the wing at 666, adding some class and often quick smart ball movement into 50 as a winger.  This didn't happen in the first half from what i witnessed, mostly utilised at CBs & on ball yes?  Did well but not the usual structure we see from Casey.

Casey are also missing so many important players (moved on or moved up to senior level) from the 2022 premiership line up.

Including Bell who tends to gell really with the likes of moose, Dunstan, Woe and White when fit & in good form.  His connection with the Casey regulars as well as his competitive attack at the drop etc just adds to the cooking pot and a large part of why Casey has been so hard to beat for long periods.

Verral is reasonable and hopefully will come on with enough time in the system but at this point KFW is a long way off impacting (even at this level) and Grundy just can't get off the ground to compete with any oppo ruck who has a leap and / or a big height advantage.

Grundy and Verral also don't mark very often.  Bell is also reasonable in this area when he's on which helps Casey to intercept and/or control momentum at times.
