Yep the build up was pretty big.

Was expecting an MMA style blood bath but it was more like watching one of Big Bad Barry's attempts to enter the ring.  A number of glancing blows but not many connected.

The reality didn't quite hit the heights of the hype.

I'm trying to work out what the literally qualifies here: the "almost", the "got away", the "murder" or the "week after week". Or perhaps "literally" is (ironically, literally) not the correct word. 🙂

It’s interesting looking back on these incidents. I enjoy listening to the commentary more than the incidents. 
Jack Edwards, Peter McKenna etc. Looking back we remember the king hits etc but also what went on as part of general play that was accepted and did not involve reports. The head high punches, elbows, and shirt fronts that went on in general play. Players softened one another up week in week out. There were always players that escaped being targeted. As a kid I remember John Peck the Hawks full forward would soften up every opponent with the exception of Tassie Johnson and Wes Lofts because they were two full backs that were not to be trifled with. There was almost a mutual respect between Peck and these two. Tassie would be remembered as a fair player but he had the cold hard stare of an executioner.

I've got a really bad cold - I've checked for Covid till the cows come home and it ain't - and my wife who has about four degrees - north south east and west, all covered - does semantics wid me, just a peasant, all the time. Not to mention we've both retired and now give each other ruggery 24 hours a day...Woe is me.

He was too talented as a footballer to just be another executioner...plenty of them in his day...

I recall reading that Leigh Matthews admitting he never got into a fight outside of football in his life. We must remember that players with certain abilities were encouraged to be thugs by coaches and the games culture. Thuggery has through footballs history until recently has been a core tactic of the game. A throwback to aggressive zero sum what ever it takes to win Anglocentric colonial/settler culture. It is what it is and now only legal implications not player welfare keep egregious brutality in check.

No, no, it's not my brain function - that's been zero for years. However, I have checked Wikipedia and, yes, it confirmed that they do not nor ever have played AFL footy in the countries you mentioned. Tru Dinks!!! And, Daisycutter, I feel so sorry for John Crow Batty because you have labelled him an Anglophobe. How do you know he is not directly descended from Sassenachs?  Which, in itself, is a quandary, because if he was a Sassenach then he may well be an Angle Phobe, because the Sassenachs was the Scottish term for Poms, i.e. Saxons. Therefore, if he was descended just from Angles, the other German tribe - which it delights me to say was what England was named after, ha ha, just as France was named after another German Tribe - the Franks, well, ya gotta get some pleasures in life as a German immigrant,  then he wouldn't by definition be an Anglophobe. if you read his post you will see he was talking about a "win at all costs" culture specifically using violence.

he gratuitously introduced british colonial culture into the discussion for some strange reason.

I merely pointed out many other cultures who employed win at all costs and violence at times in the past
