The filth are a good team, no doubt. They have been the best team of the year to date (so were we this time last year).

I just think that come finals when wins mean the most and fear of losing is all the more powerful, they'll once again be found wanting.

Agree with all of the above.

I actually think there is a similarity to our 2022 season, in that for the first half of last year teasm didnt think they could beat our defence - or us - and came into games on the psycological back foot.

Teams come into games against the Pies and even if in front at 3 quarter time belive the Pies wil still roll over them. Becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. But a couple of close losses will dint that aura.

And lets not forget, in the close games that really mattered last year - their firts final against the cats and their prelim against the Swans - they lost both.

Is that what you were saying about us this time last year OD?

I cannot remember binman ( ageing process is tramping all over me). Seriously I don't think I was with those predicting another flag in 2022 or talking about a dynasty. Perhaps agreeing with you there have been a lot of May premiers over the years. In addition to injuries and lack of form eg. Kossie has been poor since being suspended. I think we are now too predictable. I will be there tomorrow but I have low expectations.

If we go 4-4 over the next 8 rounds, get Petty and Oliver back, have Salem coming into some form and aren't carrying injuries then look out. I don't care where those 4 wins come from. Win the last 5 against slightly softer opposition and we'll have our 16 wins and a likely top 4 spot. Hold the faith Demonlanders, we've got this.

We have a chance to get back to our 2021 best imv and potentially make a PF but Goody has to make a few hard calls in the next few weeks and come out of the buy with a relatively settled line up.

There's been a few nice additions to the team since that season.  Namely McVee, Chandler and Hunter.

Personally i don't think we can run with all three.

With the return of Salem i can't see how we can keep all three of Gus, Hunter and him in the side.  One of them has to make way imv.

2021 saw Gus on the non-Langdon wing.  Would like to see Gus trialled here this week with Hunter out.

I love what McVee has brought so far, but compared to our best 2021 flag team, his inclusion means that Petty is pushed out to make way.  This means Petty plays as a forward but also results in Lever taking the 2nd oppo TF which takes away our best intercept defender.  Places additional pressure on May as he's getting less chop out spoils from Lever and Lever grabbing less marks.  The ball's hitting the deck more often or getting pinned inside 50 at ground level more often.

Regardless it has to be one of McVee or Bowey if Petty/Disco are played in defence in order to free Lever.  You can't have both.

If Goody insists on playing Petty forward then IMV Disco is a must addition to free up Lever.  If the FD doesn't believe Disco is ready, then they need to send Petty back again.

The other two missing cogs....

Petty back = BBB in

Macca & JVR to fight it out for the 2nd KF role.

We also only ran with one crumbing small forward in Kozzy meaning we had an extra rolling through the middle and pushing forward....Harmes.

Chandler out for Harmes.

I'm not saying any of the above is the panacea but if the bulk of the above are as good or better (in terms of form) as they were in 2021.... why wouldn't you go back to the very best combo we've had in the last 3 seasons?

At least trial it for 4 to 5 matches anyway.  See if the team improves/ settles.  Then some minor fine tuning from there.

Not being facetious, but have you watched their games this season?

They have not played every game at finals like pressure. Nowhere near it, as evidenced by the fact that they are currently 8th for average contested possession per game (we are 2nd behind the Saints).

I have watched all of their games and would argue they were only fully wound up against the Cats, Port, Tigers and the Bombers (and then only in the last q). Their pressure was average in their wins against  the Saints, Crows, Giants and Blues.

Of course I rate the Pies. But I also think they are well and truly overrated.

In my opinion, the probability of us winning the flag is higher than the Pies winning it. In fact, i think the Lions are a better chance of wining the falg than the Pies.

I hope your right.

Me..  since feb 1965...  ive enjoyed 1.......ÒNE  Premiership.   Unfortunately remember decades of being irrelevant.  Suffered  through 2 inglorious decapitations 88 and 2000.

I'm rather keen on the idea of a flag...   not so much the nice participatory ribbon.

Cheers

That is exactly my timeline too! And also my wish, just want to see one in the flesh

I don't rate us, we had the near perfect season in 2021. Game plan had not been worked out, a number of players played together at their peak and almost no injuries. Hopefully I will be proved wrong but the next 3 matches will show if we are genuine GF participants. At present we look like the Dogs won the flag when everything fell into place and then faded to makeing  up the numbers in September.

Why do you use the near perfect 2021 season as some sort of crutch for your pessimism?

Yes, we were brilliant in 2021. That is something to be celebrated.

For a side that you believe has been “worked out” since then, we’re doing pretty well to be 23-11 since then. Do you think we’d be 34-0 if we hadn’t been “worked out”?

If it all just fell into place for us in 2021 then thank the lord, he's truly watching over us.

Why do people keep comparing us to the Dogs of 16? Because they want us to fail and say I told you so?

In the two years after their flag the Dogs finished 10th in 2017 and 13th in 2018. They weren't even making up the numbers.

We went 16-6 to finish second in 2022 and our exit was disappointing yes, there were some reasons for that. This year we've been in the 8 at the end of every round and it remains to be seen where we finish. I do agree that the next three games are huge, I'd be happy with a 2-1 record.

I don't know Zeph, I really have no fricken idea. The 21 Dees was a stronger list than the 16 Dogs, I don't think there were many thinking they would go back to back let alone win the first 10 of the next season.

It is idiotic, moronic and preposterous to think there is a connection and you'd have to be a fool and a communist to make one.

...well almost.  I think if I feel it that once,  I'll want it again, but that one with our fellow Demon family and faithful would be magnificent.  Thankfully listening to Max, I know him and I'll bet the rest of the team really want it too.

I also want it to be a proper daylight flag before the AFL caves to the TV gods again and turn it into some kind of second rate entertainment spectacle for their advertising masters.

I’m pretty confident we’ll be 2 from 2 in a fortnight, then it’s 2 from 6, top 4 here we come baby!

I think your line is coming unstuck TU. We are well and truely worked out. If the blues kick straight next week they will win easy.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
