Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not that I endorse Gambling, but there was a multi which was

Both there was a mutli with France and Brazil to make the final, Switzerland to make the R16 and Mbappe to win the Goldenboot at $81.

Told people to get on it, but i didn't. So i am actively barracking for Portugal/England/Argentina/Netherlands to avoid me being sad.

Correct, whole ball must cross the line.

With VAR the widest point of the ball (the middle) is measured against the edge of the line marked on the ground ... so if 2mm of the widest part of the ball cuts across the edge of that line, the ball is deemed to have not completely crossed the line

Now you and others might not like how the ruling is adjudged but that type of ruling is right across the board for every team

It's very similar to how a tennis ball is measured against the line marking.  I agree that there is grass between the bottom of the ball and the line but that's not how the ruling is adjudged

It's the widest part of the ball against the edge of the line from an overhead viewpoint

Yep, Macca, I understand all that. Souness and another Brit commentator did, howeve,r point out that to the naked eye the ball was out and called so. He then asked the simple question of why it took the VAR dudes so long to 'manufacture' their Euclid derived 'explanations'. As I have intimated, much of life is in the eyes of the beholder...

The mistake made was not having the overhead vision available at the time ... thus all the angst, @Monbon

But we are dealing with human beings and there is a reliance on them to make the overhead vision available

But we make errors because we're human  ... you know that saying about footy umpires... "They're only human" haha

On a lighter note is it at all possible to be able to apply VAR technology to the Harmes incident?  That would settle a few arguments!!

Brazil were impressive last night. Great team to watch!

As for the games tonight, both games could go down to the wire

Morocco topped their group and could trouble Spain.  But I'm reckoning Spain to win 2-1

Portugal vs Switzerland could go either way so it's a toss-up

After tonight we get 2 days break and then the matches are as follows (Q/F's)

Sat 9th 2.00am Croatia vs Brazil

Sat 9th 6.00am Netherlands vs Argentina

Sun 10th 2.00am  Morocco or Spain vs Portugal or Switzerland

Sun 10th 6.00am England vs France

I got on with Betr to win a grand for a $10 bet ... Betr are now offering 400 in bonus cash instead but I'm holding firm (as are a couple of mates who are on Brazil as well)

#GambleResponsibly

By the way, the very definition of gambling responsibly is getting 100-1 for backing the favourite!! (With a small outlay)

But Brazil are not over the line ... they didn't win in '82 or '86 when they had a super team!

I was really just talking about the rule itself not the decision.

Having said that though I think they made the right call, from all the angles we had available anyway..

Here's a trivia question for you good folk

The following teams all have the same thing in common at World Cup level

USA, Germany, Brazil, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, Sweden, Croatia, France, Poland, West Germany, Portugal, Chile & Austria

So what is it?

Spain out! (on penalties)

Which makes things a little easier for the winner of the France/England QF (winner will play Morocco or Portugal* in a SF)

*Portugal demolish the Swiss, 6-1!

21yo Goncalo Ramos (who replaced Ronaldo in the team) scores a hat trick! Looks a player too!

Haven't read all the latest posts so if the answer is there you'll have to take my word for it.

They've all played in every World Cup?

Edit: Too overzealous, it's wrong.

A clue (don't want to drag it out too long)

Each of the teams have reached a certain level (at least once) when participating at World cup level

I'm loving watching this Morocco team at the moment, their side is very well balanced with some great flair. With a bit of luck they could make the final!

3rd Place "winners" as such.

I say that as 1930 WC did not have a play off.

I’m going with Roy on the trivia. Was going to say they’ve all had a 3rd place finish.

Yes, quite right

Well played gentlemen!

And I've never understood why the 3rd place playoff is treated with such disdain

3rd place in the most popular sport in the world is a major achievement in my view

Mini rant over!

Well done @Dee Zephyr and @roy11 that's some good work there. Let's keep the trivia coming!

The third place playoff works perfectly for the World Cup. Should definitely be seen like winning a Bronze medal in the Olympics. We saw how happy our guys were in the Basketball last year after that!

Once @Macca gave the clue away the answer jumped out very quick. First WC I can remember was 1994 and I knew all the 3rd place winners for that were all on the list. I've also read a fair bit about the 1930 WC (which was the inaugural WC) so the USA part gave it away.

To summarize, have a wiki copy/paste

Third and fourth place
The now-traditional third place play-off was not established until 1934, so the format of the 1930 World Cup is unique in not distinguishing between the third and fourth placed teams. Occasional sources, notably a FIFA Bulletin from 1984, incorrectly imply that a third-place match occurred and was won 3–1 by Yugoslavia. Accounts differ as to whether a third-place match was originally scheduled. According to a 2009 book by Hyder Jawad, Yugoslavia refused to play a third-place match because they were upset with the refereeing in their semi-final against Uruguay.

At the end of the championship, the captains of the United States team (Tom Florie) and Yugoslavia (Milutin Ivković) both received bronze medals. Yet a FIFA technical committee report on the 1986 World Cup included full retrospective rankings of all teams at all previous World Cup finals; this report ranked the United States third and Yugoslavia fourth, due to a better goal difference on otherwise identical records, a practice since continued by FIFA. In 2010, the son of Kosta Hadži, the chief of Yugoslav delegation at the 1930 World Cup and the vice-president of the Football Association of Yugoslavia at the time, claimed that Yugoslavia, as a team, has been awarded one bronze medal, which has been kept by Hadži himself and his family for the following 80 years. According to this source, Yugoslavia was placed third because of the semi-finals loss to the eventual champions, Uruguay. The official recording however shows the United States team claiming third place.

Tonight

Brazil should win but Croatia are a decent team.  But holding out Brazil's strike power is easier said than done.  3-1 to Brazil

The other game can go either way and we may see more than a few goals.  This game promises a lot with Messi on show along with Holland's total football

Could be one for the ages

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
