I try to like the womens game but as a spectacle it's mostly awful with flashes of competence

I think the spectacle is greatly enhanced by popularity. Entertainment has always been razzle, dazzle.

From a skills point of view, I think they are great at following directions, and all understand roles and structures well. Their on field talk ànd support is great. The games are very emotionally rewarding and I look forward to watching and following them.

What's not to like.

Addit: It is different to the mens game, but so are many things produced by females. That's why we need to hear their voices, experiences, expressions, and take notice of the best women in their field (help the least). Only when fully accepted will we have a balanced world. Oh yea, plus the many other voices from our diversified and eventually inclusive world.

Like Tayla Harris, I'm sure you'll get up for the Grannie WCW. Also, seeing it's the last AFLW game next week I'd like to thank you for the great insight you have provided to Demonland on the AFLW and all things MFC. You always have a positive slant on things and I love reading your posts. We are lucky to have you. ❤💙🍷🏆

Awww, that’s so sweet of you. Thank you, PD 💕

Unfortunately I won’t be able to make the trip to QLD. I’m absolutely gutted. Had the GF been scheduled for here in Melbourne I’d be there with bells on, but since they’ve settled on Springfield it’s just not possible. For starters, the airfare doubled overnight. It sucks, but that’s life. I’ll definitely be at banner-making this week though so I’ll feel a part of it in that respect I guess.

Again, thank you for your kind sentiments. ❤️💙🥰

Herald Sun now reporting that Melbourne coach Mick Stinear said after the game Tayla Harris had played the game out in pain but would be good to go for the AFLW decider.

“Yeah a bit of discomfort during the game we took her out of the ruck and tried to use her as a weapon forward,” Stinear said.

“She’s OK, certainly a bit of discomfort during the game but I can’t see her missing next week, she’s tough.”

Just a quick injury report, don’t worry, not any of our players, just a clumsy cheer squad member who got tangled up in the multitudes of crepe paper while helping to carry the banner (with [censored] heavy poles still attached) off the field. She went down and the big burly comrades up front didn’t realise she was entangled and just kept running. She sprained her ankle quiet badly.

Yeah ok, it was me. 🙄 I sucked it up and carried on, though. But the adrenaline wore off ages ago and now I’m sporting an ankle that looks like a grade three’s science project. All good though since I have wine! And wine fixes everything. 😁

Future me is gonna hate present-day me. 😬

No doubt I'll face the charge of being insensitive, but I must admit WCW, I found the mental image of a deranged ranga being mummified in crepe paper so sidesplittingly funny I almost spilled my shiraz.

So for the time being it’s LSW (Limping) CivilWar?  Recover quickly!

Went along yesterday, had a great time with 18yo son (who suggested we go)

The ball movement by our team was silky and both teams defence was excellent.

Lots of young women in the crowd which was great to see but had to tell an old boofhead to pull his head in when lecturing a couple of young people about "the history of the game"

"It's women like you!...." spare me days!!

You’re SO insensitive!!!

It could’ve been so much worse though: while being dragged along, I could hear Duxy (everyone knows Duxy, cheer squad royalty) yelling out “where’s WCW? She was right in front of me a minute ago!” I knew it wouldn't be long before he tripped on crepe-wrapped me and had he landed on me I might not be here to tell the tale. For those who don’t know Duxy… let’s just say he weighs significantly more than me. 😬

Unless they find another level, is hard to be see them beating Brisbane.

That's the thing we bring because of our game plan ability and pressure other teams back to our level and make it a fair dinkum scrap.

I do think we do have to not let the Lions kick goals in a run and have to  make up more than 2 or 3.

If game follows pattern of last time we played Lions, will not be pretty.

Harris in helps from last time and the team seem better in defence. Will need things to go our way, but certainly in with a better chance than last year against the Crows who monstered our girls.

I was at the game, and it was VERY windy, affecting the standard greatly.  So Dees fans shouldn't be too worried about the low standard footy leading into the GF.

I have since watched the replay on TV , and it' s not  nearly  as  obvious  on TV how difficult the conditions were.

Also, i was surprised  when one commentator   said that  North would  have the  wind in Q4.  I'm dead sure  it  was easier  kicking  to the Royal Parade end.

Just gonna spew out my thoughts as usual!

First of all, credit to North. They’re a better team than many recognise and but for some wasted chances could easily have taken this one. It was finals footy in a lot of ways: not necessarily champagne football, just two sides who happen to match up very well on each other.

Absolutely critical for us was the straight set shot goalkicking of Fitzsimon and Sherriff at pivotal moments. They coolly took their opportunity when many others in this league would have faltered. Gay won some really crucial contests. Paxy did Paxy things (shout out to the guy yelling, “Go Karen!” throughout the game, much to my amusement). Big game from Hanks, just so clean and relentless in mopping up. Mackin also impressed with some beautiful long kicks and “right place, right time” marks, reflecting hard running. Mithen—these days, you know what you’ll get from her. Mistakes, yes, but always energy and hardness. After a shaky first half, Gillard didn’t put a foot wrong. That resilience is so good to see. Zanker was quiet then sacrificed her game and worked into it. Birch looked a bit off early and was a good barometer for how swirly the wind was, as even she was misjudging the ball drop!

Some quieter games from a few of our big names and some uncharacteristic mistakes—but many lifted in the last. At times they tried to force chains of possession that just weren’t on and made some bad decisions with ball in hand. Our forwards connection was poor, and some structural difficulties due to Tayla being limited didn’t help.

The kudos for this win, though, has to go to the defensive effort under an absolute onslaught in the third. Getting trapped like that in D50 is obviously not ideal, but sometimes you have to make do with what you have and then take your chances when they come—and to have retain the belief that you can make that happen. Which we did in the last. Of course, against the best opposition…the chances might simply never arrive.

The enduring memory I’ll have from this game is seeing a player, midway through the last, turning through traffic and then snapping a wonderful, match-sealing goal. From the legends stand, I couldn’t quite make out who it was moving with such agility and executing such a classy finish. Hore maybe? Nope. Could it be…Daisy! Moving the best that she has in a while and with such a pure kick after missing so many targets throughout. Cue a standing ovation from a very pumped up crowd.

OMG, WCW, I had no idea that happened!  I wound up sitting with the Ruby Dees on Saturday, I didn't see that happen to you.  I'm so sorry :(. Hope you're okay.  I'll give you an extra big hug on Thursday

I would love some indication from someone at the game about the affect of the wind, especailly after half time.  The commentatiors barley mentioned it, but you could see the trees in the background really moving around, could often hear it in the effects mic and at three quarter time, the players hair was all over the place.  It seemed to have become very influential, but it was hard to tell which if any end it favoured.

Great game to watch.  We'll go in as underdogs again for the GF, but who knows what happens if we play our best footy.  Shame the AFL has made such a mess of the ground situation.  The AFLW competetion desrves so much better.

The wind was crazy strong. if that game was at Casey it would have been ridiculous as the stands offered some measure of protection at PP

Favored the royal parade end (we were kicking to that end in the last quarter), though was actually blowing diagonally across the ground which made it even trickier

I’m glad you didn’t see it! What’s more  I hope NOBODY saw it. 😁 Although I don’t know how anyone could have seen it since I was literally engulfed, buried under the very letters I so lovingly stuck on couple of days before. (Dramatic much?)

It’s actually healing really well. But I’ll take that extra big hug on Thursday anyways. 🙂

I watched the replay last night and the cameras didn’t capture the half of it. It was the craziest wind in that it’d spring up from nowhere, from relatively still to gale force in a heartbeat. All the while  unpredictably changing direction.

We had a Giant Head Code Red Emergency just before the match started. A sudden gust picked up some of them and sent them sailing through the air. Giant Lil Mithen Head almost left the stand!

Yep, can confirm what others have said. It felt strong enough in the stands and kept shifting. On the field after the game it as way worse. Bizarre how little is was mentioned in the broadcast considering you could see the ball being held up in the wind!

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
