Here is a classic Melbourne Demons patch from the 1980s.

I actually have this! It's somewhere in my bedroom. Just need to find it! 🤔

Great film Jack.

Great score, great scoreboard.

Notice how many shots at goal require only 6 or so steps for the run in and no 30 second time delays. No mouthguards in groins, no flipping of the ball, no high fives and fist pumps for a goal. Who says today's footy is better?

Sadly there is no going back.

I had this badge sewn onto my scarf in 1978 ( wish I still had it). Cheer Squad on the Southern Stand Wing (best seat in the house)(thanks to grandoldflag.com.au for the image)

Does anyone remember the days when every VFL and VFA ground was near a train station?

After last night’s big game in Adelaide there could be no better vision from the vault than Andrew Leoncelli’s match winner against the Crows ~

Remember this as a kid, what a game! The irony was that Goodwin kicked the goal before Leoncelli's to put Crows in front, but the Dees had other ideas.

As I recall, Neale had instructed the rucks to Not punch the ball clear. Schwartz ignored Neale's instruction and won us the game.

Must have had a long extension cord back then.

My Andrew Leoncelli story ...

I was at a lunch with some female colleagues. Andrew was at another table. I introduced myself to Andrew and said I was a Demons supporter. He put his arm around me and said "you poor man".

I then told him that I had told my colleagues that he had kicked the winning goal with 5 seconds to spare some years before. Without further ado, he walked over to my table, pulled out his phone and showed my colleagues a clip of the winning goal. Hilarious!!

Top bloke.

40 scoring shots to 29 and we lose.

Just watched that and have some observations:

1.  Our forward line was dysfunctional with the ball just being bombed in.

2.  Robert Flower wasn't playing or was off injured.

3.  The commentators actually called the game without all the BS.

4.  The MCG had a few patches with no grass, particularly the centre square.

5.  Sean Wight was a champion.

6.  I was expecting a last-minute win to the Demons.  I'm retrospectively shattered.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
