Thats a lot of height heading towards the twilight of their careers. 

We will need to focus more on bringing in some height through draft and trade over the next few years.

I would particularly like to get some young rucks in to learn from Stafford, Gawn and Jackson.

Gawn will play well into his 30s (unless he gets a bad injury- heaven forbid!), but the rest have all had injury woes in the past and will start to drop off in a season or two.

It’s also why we need to keep Jackson.

Imo Petty will take over May's role as no 1. KPD at the end of his career. Makes him one of our most important players short and long term

Given he is unlikely to make it as a forward is there and chance the 24yo, 197cm Sam Weideman could make it as a tall back? He is with us till at least the end of 2023.

i'd imagine AMW will get the full 3yrs as a cat b given his early signs as we don't appear to have any other zone selections in the next 12 months or so that would be worth displacing him

I so wish Hunt gets another contract or if not goes as a Premiership player. 

Laurie would be the only other OOC player (excl Rookies) that looks certain to get another contract.  Chandler will be upgraded to the Seniors list.

Agree on Hunt LH he is a true utility forward back wing and now has reinvented himself as a lockdown back, deserves at least two more years.!!

Hunt wasn't a Premiership player, Hibberd was. I would imagine at this stage Hibberd is unlikely to get a new 1-year contract unless he can get over his injuries, play some Casey Football and get back into the senior side (and I can't really see him replacing Hunt at this stage). As it is  we have to find a spot for Salem.

Surely Bedford is a certainty to get offered another contract, and Smith.

What we do know is that all clubs have the same cap, they can spend +/- x% and bank the difference for future years.  And there are lots of techniques to move money around if the cap gets tight or there are spare funds in any year. 

Apropos this, Carlton are said to have plenty of cap capacity even tho they have signed players on mega $ in recent years, apparently by banking the cap in low spend years.

MFC are showing they are very proficient in keeping players and staying within the cap.  Happy to have them keep up the good work as I have no want to know cap details.

I believe clubs have to pay at least 90% of the salary cap every year to their players as a minimum.
I'm actually not sure where I heard this, or if it is even correct.

I believe it is 95%.  If a club underpays the sal cap by that 5% they can 'bank' two years worth.  They can then pay over 100% eg 105% for two years or 110% for one year.

eg if the cap is $13m and they spend 95% they bank $650,000.  Over two years that is $1.3m 'banked'.

Essentially yes.  Plus the possibility of sal cap space created from retirements and trades that year.

Not to mention the ability to front-end or back-end contracts of individual players. Lots of moving parts and as we've seen with Collingwood it can come unstuck if you're not careful. Not a job I would envy.

Sorry Lucifers. I was referring specifically to your comment 'Only 3 premiership players OOC this year to sign up:  Brayshaw, Hunt, Jackson.' I read that as as past premiership players OOC this year to sign up and it mentioned Hunt but not Hibberd. I accept your 2nd comment (which you have quoted above) makes total sense re Hunt but you don't mention in your commentary (yiu do in thechart) that Hibberd is a premiership player that is OOC this year. This is the important point plus of course cap space created from retirements and trades mentioned by Lucifers. The potential 110% after 2 years of 95% could help but is more marginal.

Clearly Buddy's contract has created issues at the Swans, as has Grundy's at Collingwood (athough in the case of Buddy it has been money well spent). Supposedly Dusty is on $1.4m a year so clearly him leaving would free up a lot of salary cap space for  Richmond in 2023-24, so I don't think it's just a case of Hardwick's altruism that Richmond is  entertaining the idea.

I agree that being a list manager must be an incredibly clallenging but rewarding job (if you get it right). Gold Coast's stance in 2021 was to contract every player so they couldn't leave, but of course that creates it's own problems, like having to trade most of your draft picks to Collingwood at a discount.

Oops.  Yes, I got Hibberd and Hunt wrong - brain fade. 

I most definitely think Beddford deserves another contract but didn't put him my certainty ie 'must keep' category of this year's OOC players as we have other small forwards waiting in the wings:

• Chandler: is actually contracted for another year.  He was courted by Adelaide last year but was offered a two year contract by us and stayed.  For the second year of the contract he must be promoted to the seniors. 
• Laurie:  As a new draftee it is hard to see him not be given a chance at AFL level with another contract.

Kozzie and Spargo aren't going anywhere so where does it leave Bedford?  I agree he will be offered another contract but he will most probably get more elsewhere and become a regular 22.

That is all a bit clinical on my part.  On a more emotional level I love watching Bedford play and he has really taken his chances when selected.  And I never want to see a demon player leave our club.

I can see where you're coming from re Bedford. With every player of course it's just not a case of Melbourne offering them a short term contract and them accepting it. Bedford will want to play senior footy and the security of a long term contract/better money.

For all the other 2021 draftees it's too early (except Moniz-wakefield perhaps?). I'm still uncertain about  Rosman. He's shown some talent but is not really showing consistency. To  be fair to him, Laurie, (Declan) Smith & Turner the curtailed 2021 Season for Casey hasn't helped, but they have another 10 games plus finals in 2022 to make their cases.

I looked at OOC the list as 'must keep'.  Smith may again stay on a short contract but it would be good if his body could withstand more than a handful of games.

Next year's OOC bring a new set of contract challenges with so many premiership players and new draftees yet to get a chance.

Elsewhere posters have said the club expects to lose best 22 players altho looking at the contracts I can't see who they are likely to be.

But if our players get great development and outgrow the opportunities we have then I wish them well.  They owe it to themselves to make the most of short lived careers.

Clarrie had one more year to go on his contract and would be a Free Agent.  The 7 year extension keeps him a Demon for another 8 years!!

It is fantastic that he has signed now which eliminates all the FA noise in 2023.  He can just continue playing great footy with no distractions.  He will still be only 32 when this contract expires.
