Did anyone happen to hear the interview on ABC radio today with Michael Byrne and how he was shipped out of Melbourne in 1982?

I don’t know about shipped out, but I do remember one of his last games and he didn’t even put in an effort. He was simply dreadful and I, at that time, was under the impression he wanted out.  I’m not sure what the situation was but I believe he’d asked to be transferred to Hawthorn.

One of the very few we got rid of who went on to ultimate success.

From the implementation of Vic Country Zones to the start of the Draft we were terrible.

I was hammered mercilessly from Whorethorn Supporters over the Byrne trade at work in the 80’s.
I had nothing to say. We made a bad decision (again)

Shipped him off midweek.
We played Hawks that Saturday at Princes Park.
Byrne kicked 5 goals.

All over now 💙❤️

I remember this well. I knew him in a past life, I played cricket with him, he was a blood on the pitch fast bowler absolute terroriser.

Another dreadful decision by club at the time.

He was a liability with us. At the dorks he had Matthews, Dipper, Wallace and others who could cover for him and take the pressure off him.

All he had to do was contest.

Sadly we know all too well what we were in the past😪

All body parts crossed we can now move forward and enjoy the new MFC☺️

I thought he was a pretty handy player and was disappointed that he went elsewhere.

As I said, his last game with us was disgraceful and it was obvious that he wasn't happy and wanted out.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
