Nice article.

I think she echoes many Victorian based MFC diehards in that a premiership this year would be nice but the true dream is to see the boys live at the MCG celebrating with friends and family in more normal times.

    I can empathize with the sentiment of a long suffering punter. After all I am one myself.

    However, I hate the attitude that it’s our ‘turn’ and that we are owed a premiership based on who we are. 

    That type of thinking was what got us into this drought and is a big reason why Carlton is where they are.

    My take away from the article is less around being 'due' or a fairytale and more around the normalisation of watching your team from anywhere but the game itself, which is helpful.

    Absolutely. There are no "turns" when it comes to flags. There was a romanticised idea bandied around in 2018 that it was our turn after the Bulldogs and Tigers drought-breaking flags in the two prior seasons. We all remember what happened.

    Still, nothing changes the fact the a flag would be awesome regardless. That’s why we barrack for our club.

    Re the history part, rationally we all know that yesterday is no guide to tomorrow.  I'm happy to dream for a further10 days and 🤞 there is another fairytale/cinderalla story in the making.

    Its the editors that create story titles not the authors.  Click bait!

    To be fair, and while the article did cover more ground than that, there is literally a line in the OP article that states:

    'The Doggies did it in 2016, and whilst I have a distinct fondness for Melbourne’s west, they’ve had their fairy-tale, it’s our turn now. '

    I'm wary... If both teams bring their best, they will be tough to beat. Dogs by less than a goal....

    I haven’t been reading DL extensively this week but I reckon this is the first post I’ve seen that’s tipped the Dogs.

    • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
