I guess we are all different with our musical tastes. Me, I’m totally shocked that some on here don’t like the music of the Stones or the Beatles. And maybe a shock to a lot of you, I cannot get into metal at all. I took my family to see the Stones at the Sydney Olympic stadium, but couldn’t have been more disappointed in the sound - it was like listening on AM radio. Obviously I never saw the Beatles, but I did see Paul McCartney and Wings at the Music Bowl ( supported by the amazing Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band!). I saw Billy Thorpe and band and Jimmy Barnes and band performing on the same bill at the old Sydney Showgrounds and that was a blast. Loved U2 when I saw them live. When I was working in the Middle East I had the chance to see a number of live acts, ranging from Tom Jones ( cause there was nothing else to do - but he was great),Ed Sheeran (who I’d never heard of, but a friend wanted to go), cold Play (sensational) and the best concert I’ve ever, ever seen, Eric Clapton, over in Dubai. There was no light show or theatrics, it was just pure music - pure class. If there was one live performance I could see again, it would be his.

Haha i will not have my (rare) tastes in music questioned by someone who dislikes the Stones and the Beatles, and who is seriously deranged to boot!

And for your info, I didn't like the Ed concert (and still don't enjoy his music) but when you are in a place that is generally devoid of entertainment, you take what you can get!

The Tote turns forty in a week or so and if I was in Melbourne I'd be going to see the evergreen screamfeeder on Friday 4th.

They've just put out another album and it's glorious 90s guitar pop sunshine.

Another bloody brilliant Brisbane band HITS play Thursday 10th. they're sensational as well.

Rage are one of the few bands left I still haven't seen live - was 5th in line for tickets when they came out around 2007 and played Festival Hall I think and tickets sold out after the 2nd person. I can't remember if they played Big Day Out but I didn't go.

Would also love to see Metallica and Guns n Roses live but I am extremely hesitant to pay hundreds of dollars for a gig at a footy oval. I just can't imagine it would be any good. I had level 2 tickets at Docklands to see Metallica in 2019 I think but Hetfield went into rehab so the tour was cancelled

I saw Sabbath when they came out in 2013 and had a blast, it sucked when they played songs from the new album they were promoting but when the sirens started blaring for War Pigs at the start of the gig my god!

A couple of other great gigs I've been to are Cypress Hill at Metro and also at Festival Hall, Electric Wizard at the Green Room (Supercoven & Return Trip were immense), Tomahawk/Fantomas/Melvins at The Palace, Melvin's playing Houdini live at Ding Dong Lounge and Nine Inch Nails at the BDO.

Would love to see Run The Jewels as well if they toured with Rage would be awesome but not sure that's gonna happen any time soon.

I was at that Sabbath gig too, War Pigs was instant tingles. 
I went to that Rage gig at Festival Hall, it was so good. One of the best gigs I’ve been to was Beastie Boys at Festival Hall, so much fun, absolute showmen. Encore on a pop up stage at the back where I was. 
Mars Volta put on a ripping show there too. So many good memories there, Faith No More, A Perfect Circle, Deftones, Mastodon, Soundgaden… Tenacious D was funny as [censored]. 
Isn’t it some sort of religious hell hole now?

 

I’ve seen Tool half a dozen times too. Each time as good as the last. My favourite band by a long way. Deftones about half a dozen too all over Melbourne. Met them a few times. 
 

Metallica were great on a revolving stage at Rod Laver. 
Gunners were mediocre. 
 

I miss live music. 

Off to see idles soon, probably best live act going round right now

Post-Covid; Rolling Stones on tour this year kicks it off ... but will it ever be the same again?

Pre-Covid; forgive my Jazz sensibilities, but Herbie Hancock at the Hamer Hall 2019 is just about the zenith. All star band with guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist James Genus and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta was fusion scent heaven.

Speaking of other octogenarians; Sun Ra Arkestra, lead by Marshall Allen at the Forum Melbourne back in 2014 amazing these cats on the outer limits.

Back in my sometimes misspent youth, Melbourne was an absolute mecca for live music with a vibrant local scene and venues such as Much More Ballroom, Victorian Blind Institute and many memorable union nights. Visiting bands from overseas and interstate too.

My youngest daughter has attempted to persuade me about contemporary mores, which I'm sure are 'good'. But admittedly when you're stuck in a magnificent time warp musically, there is no real need to step out of the cocoon.

TC, I only got an appreciation for jazz when I was working in Qatar. The owner of the St Regis hotel had, on his top floor, an intimate jazz club. He would travel to the USA every so often to seek out the best of the jazz scene there and would pay extraordinary amounts to get the bands back to St Regis for a 2-week season. After 14 nights, a new band would inspire us. Just loved it.

Forgot about Mick!  I saw him in the early-mid 80s at a venue in the Upper Esplanade, St Kilda, playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, the band from whence he was recruited by the Rolling Stones in 1969 to replace Brian Jones.

Yep, that was the gig and it was a good 'un.  He played a lot of material from "Odelay" which was his most recent album (the next, the equally fine "Mutations" followed later that year IIRC).
