Deevout 534 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 If it’s the decision of the NT Government not to allow the game to be played Friday night in the “Alice” do we get our $700K? If we played there, most likely there would be no crowd permitted to attend. If they agreed to a fly in fly out game in Alice Springs would we be contractually obligated to do it? Sydney is the most likely outcome. Get there local Dee’s Supporters. 1 Quote
Demonland 74,311 Posted May 30, 2021 Author Posted May 30, 2021 Melbourne will lose $800,000 from the NT Government if it loses its Alice Springs clash and $1 million-plus if the Queen’s Birthday clash at the MCG in Round 13 is relocated. Demons CEO Gary Pert said on Saturday the alternative was playing in Sydney or Queensland on Friday night. “At this stage it’s more likely to be interstate,” Pert said of the clash, which could cost the Demons $800,000 if not played under a NT sponsorship arrangement. 1 3 Quote

Bring-Back-Powell 15,527 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 We must be desperate for cash if we’re contemplating “hosting” Brisbane at the Gabba on Friday night. What an absolute home ground advantage that would be for Brisbane- the same side that played 14/17 home and away games in QLD last year. Quote

I have not seen that put forward and I doubt it would be an option. Even less so if we were forced to play as a fly in fly out. Quote
Lucifers Hero 40,706 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 I can't see it being in Qld unless their goverment changes its policy. They stopped GWS boarding a flight to Brisbane on Friday because they played in Melbourne 13 days earlier. They had to leave the next day ie day 14. Big turnaround if they let us or other teams play in Qld next weekend. Quote
Bring-Back-Powell 15,527 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 If Brisbane could get an exemption from their government to fly in - fly out, why can’t this game be at the MCG in front of nobody. I find it hard to believe that we will make a buck in front of 1,500 people at the SCG. May as well lobby to play the game at our home ground and not mess around with travel. 3 Quote

Aside from finances I can’t work out the rationale in conceding a home game to Brisbane. Quote

Buckleys of that happening. We're more likely to get the exemption to play in NT than Brisbane is to FIFO to Melboure or even us to FIFO of QLD. Only way Vic teams will be able to go to QLD will be to hub in NSW for 2 weeks. Surprised Collingwood are half a chance to FIFO of Adelaide next week. 1 Quote
Demonland 74,311 Posted May 30, 2021 Author Posted May 30, 2021 FWIW Tom Browne says we're no chance to play in Alice Springs this week. Sydney the likely venue. Sydney will be a mini hub for a few teams next week. Quote

Because there's usually a weird libertarian angle to the modern conservative governments, they're fine with impinging on ethnically and culturally diverse people's lives, but they tend to allow us whiteys our freedoms. They tend to just shut down the culturally diverse suburbs (see Christmas time in NSW). The Andrews Government did similar to be fair (see the Towers), but Victoria has a much higher culturally diverse population than anywhere else. The current strain we're dealing with is the Indian strain unfortunately, so we have more Indian-Victorians trying to get back to Melbourne. When your quarantine system is a hotel then you'll get outbreaks. As for Liberal Governments, it wouldn't have gotten out in Victoria if a Liberal SA Government hadn't allowed it out of quarantine, while if a Liberal Federal Government had listened to pleas for months now for proper quarantine facilities rather than hotels, and had rolled out a competent vaccine program, we'd have been at the game on Friday night. No doubt the Victorian Government has made some mistakes, but the lack of oversight by the Liberal Federal Government in aged care and their inept vaccine roll-out would lose them the impending election if the ALP weren't such an unelectable neoliberal disaster. Has the Lib/Nat coalition got anything right? Ever? Quote
Nasher 33,647 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 Can anyone explain why we are “no chance” to play in Alice? Hard Vic-NT border? 1 Quote

spirit of norm smith 16,677 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 Yes NT really concerned about being compromised. Game offers no tourism benefits so they save $800k. A huge hole in our financial coffers. SCG is the best venue. Though Brisbane based lions supporters would still get in to the game but 1000 lions fans are better than 30,000 at the Gabba. ITS A BIG “NO FROM ME” TO HAVE IT AT THE GABBA Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 NT is the one place in Australia where a hard border at all times makes sense. They have such a large number of vulnerable communities. The risk is too great if an outbreak was to happen and they don’t have the resources that big states have in terms of hospitals. Can’t see us going there this week. 3 Quote
Deesprate 1,324 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 I saw it on fox with SCG next to our game. Just pleased game can be played. Agree with a no politics it is so refreshing to just focus on footy and shut out the worlds problems. 1 Quote

ITS A BIG “NO FROM ME” TO HAVE IT AT THE GABBA How does it offer no tourism benefits? Someone on here said recently they tried to get accomodation in Alice for the game and there was NOTHING available. I find it hard to believe there are NO benefits, or otherwise why would they do the deal in the first place? I do note I get an “Explore the NT” ad every time I watch video content on the MFC website, for starters (I can hear that catchy fluty song in my head now). Quote

ITS A BIG “NO FROM ME” TO HAVE IT AT THE GABBA If we are given the option of SCG and the Gabba I would prefer to take the SCG. It might however become a purely financial decision given the loss of the 800K (Alice Springs) and likely $1 Mil (Queens Birthday). Taking the Gabba gate might just be a case of cutting our financial losses than playing in front of an empty SCG. I doubt the 100s of NSW Dees and those Lions that travel south would even come close to what we could make playing at the Gabba. It was earlier reported that Carlton were offered SCG or Optus Stadium next week to play West Coast and chose SCG. They didn't have the huge financial loss hanging over their heads and they are already in Sydney so why travel into the belly of the beast and play the Eagles on their flat track. They've understandably chosen the SCG. We have a big decision to make. I would at least try to get our next 2 games vs the Lions at the G. We hardly ever seem to play them there. 1 Quote
Superunknown 4,246 Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 What’s interesting here is where the compensation and risk lies. For example if we don’t get the QB gate does the AFL give us QBW home ground next year as compo (they should) Quote
