harmes is an obvious 'in' over sparrow due to experience, age, and - arguably - diversity

it would be understandable if he was selected as he is the one who can roll through the midfield and play that defensive role that we're now lacking in viney's absence

I thought Sparrow was BOG last week and I'm quite bullish on him. But I won't loose sleep over Harmes being selected. He provides a different balance. Can't wait for Sparrow to get back on, but I think he has been the sub enough lately. Also think the sub is best suited to snr  players like Jones. I think in future there might be a 'jack of all trades" specialist developed for the role. Jordan Lewis would have made an excellent sub.

My Yum Cha is settling now.

Pick the team on principles not your fears

past performance (eg 2019) does not guarantee future returns

key principles are: (?) form, skills, 2 way running, pressure according to where you play? Am I missing anything?

so on that basis harmes v sparrow?

Casey game has been cancelled, Sparrow needs to play vs Sydney he has barely played this season and of course, didn't play at all last year.

At what point does lack of game time become a development issue?  Same goes for Chandler.

PJ2's final call 4.0

In      Petty, Sparrow, Chandler

Out  Tomlinson (knee)  Jones (managed)  Baker

Sub to be Melksham.

He was poor all pre season and poor again against Fremantle.

He had a 20 possession/1 goal game against Freo. I didn't think it that bad and he would've played the following week had he not gotten injured.

Willing to give him another chance this weekend for a bit of experience that we're lacking in the midfield, as others have touched on.

Sydney midfield last week was Kennedy, Parker, Rowbottom (20), Warner (19), Florent (22)

We'll have Petracca, Oliver, Jordon (20) - then you can add in your 2 preferred from Brayshaw, Jones, Harmes, Sparrow but note only 1 of those 4 were in the starting 22 last week.  Someone has to go out and that could be Baker but then you've got to fill his wing spot so you're still only left with 4 primary mids in the rotation.  Melksham, Pickett and ANB did cameos in there.

I'd be going with Harmes and Brayshaw back to the wing. I could go with a midfield rotation of Petracca, Oliver, Jordon and Harmes.

I'm just not comfortable with a midfield rotation of Petracca, Oliver, Jordon and Sparrow - there needs to be one more because of the inexperience and that would mean someone else has to miss. There'll be a significant number of combos where Jordon and Sparrow both have to be in there.

Good post.

Sparrow played the best game I've seen him play last week, but no-one is ''deserving'' off the back of one good Casey game.  If he strings a few together he'll get his opportunity.

I prefer Sparrow's ball handling and use to Harmes who's been fumbling, messing up potential scoring chains and out of form for about 18 months. However I felt we missed Viney's "bull at a gate" approach to clearances last week. No way Cunington waltzes out of the middle a dozen times if Viney is in there. I can see how Harmes could better replicate that than Sparrow at this stage.

I think we've got one in Tom. Different player but he gives me young Scotty Thompson vibes. Before he buggered off to the Crows

What do you mean by 'diversity'?

It's offical Petty is in.

Well I'll say it, His first half in his only game didn't fill me with any confidence at all. I would have played T Mac BACK and g iven Weeds a go! But what do I know??

Goodwin said in interview on club page a day or two ago that Petty will come in and TMac will remain forward.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
