Because too many humans have to have somehing to look up to. A star is something they can look up to and is short enough for a filth supporter to understand.

Also short enough for a headline and for online posts. Not convinced a Collingwood supporter would understand it without pictures, though.

You can add "jab" to the list of horribly overused words purely in use because its short. What's wrong with vaccination (or vaccine, depening on context), injection, innoculation or even needle?

Me and me mates developed our own lingo to get around this linguistic challenge a coupla decades ago. We can thank the brilliant Jack Dyer for some of our terms. For example, 600 of the comp's footballers are what Jack once termed 'good ordinary'. (Jack of course used this term famously to describe the Buzz after he'd just kicked the goal the year and taken the mark of the decade. A bit like Donald Richmond Horne's "the lucky country" being misappropriated, so too have we deliberately misappropriated the term 'good-ordinary'.) Another Dyeism is "going alright". This describes a player who is in and out of a team, but is managing to hold his spot "at the minute". Any footballer who cheats (we all know who you are Geelong), are called "members of the Maffra".

inflation in hyperbole - worried me as a description because hyperbole is exaggeration so I am describing exaggerated (inflated) exaggeration!

I guess the other dimension of this is that the "journalists" that write about "stars" have pretty limited vocabularies and tired cliches are all they can write.

Its off topic but I enjoy the banter between Tony Chompers Jones and the Footy Show crew but Tony is actually a journalist who can neatly and eloquently package a news item (for both sport and non sport topics). Your average sports reporter or ex player now commentating has very limited journalistic capabilities and the ex players in particular may not have had much non footy education at all.

Im not saying that all footy players are dunder heads - just many.

Well I reckon what word should we use?

Port are in the hunt for Nong free agent

Port are in the hunt for anonymous free agent

Don't have a good ring to it.

And future star - well that is hot gas (hydrogen and helium) and the hot gas I know is

Pies to unleash future fart....

Anyway the good news is that I have decided to celebrate each win with a bottle of sherry and the bad? news is I have got ahead of  myself, currently drinking bottle Nos 9.

Port are in the hunt for {dynamic, capable, tested, refreshed, journeyman, strong man, athletic, skilled, experienced, aggressive, redundant, overlooked, premiership medal winning, award winning, affordable, drug affected, cheap} free agent

Star is just lazy.

It's self-fulfilling and is related to journalistic theory.

Prominence is the news value that suggests people are much more interested in reading about people they know or know of.

By calling every player a star, you're attempting to create new stars and therefore make your job easier in future.

Its not just AFL...

  • "He's got a lot of self-belief in himself." Graham Beecroft
  • "They were numerically outnumbered." Garry Birtles
  • "Not to win is guttering." Mark Noble
  • "And with 4 minutes gone, the score is already 0-0." Ian Dark

It's the AFL drip-fed propaganda that there is a level-playing field, as promulgated by the draft. Hence any given club has 'stars' who can sway match-day results from season to season. In reality the comp. rewards clubs that have foresight to purloin the country's top talent.

Jobe Watson has already outdone all those quotes.   Cant believe the stuff that comes out of his mouth.

To clarify, I assume when you say "especially on ANZAC Day" you are referring to the footballers who play on that day, not our servicemen and women. I agree that no sports person (star, superstar, or future star) should be called a hero for what they do on any sporting field.

Thanks - yes definitely referring to the media calling footballers “heroes” especially in the ANZAC context.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
