I disagree. I've never understood the criticism of ANB. he is hard, moves well, decent enough disposals and his decision making is ok. he also hits the scoreboard. There's a lot of players I criticise but ANB has never been one of them. His form in 2017 showed me that he has already succeeded as an afl mid. He basically got moved out on to a flank since then.

Hunt got a 2 year extension because we were the slowest team in the comp. Not that hard to figure out really.

Sorry DD
You have picked out all Kossies little faults as a 19 yo player with years ahead of an exciting future.

And at the same time are ignoring the repeated weaknesses with ANB explaining he is played out of position . I am certain there are Many more Dees fans like me who are tired of ANB's continual skill errors and unfulfilled potential.

Those that criticised Jack Watts amaze me when ANB seems to be just put up with and tolerated.

As you say it's all about expectations and Jack and you now with Kossie make  first rounders free game Because of this. When it's all said and done after you join a Club your Draft pick no. Is irrelevant as to your ability. You may earn more of course snd that's what it's you so you unfairly criticise these early draftees for IMO.

this couldn't be more obvious right now than at NM, will phillips everyone expected to walk in and deliver in their midfield instead Powell, Lozarro and Ford were picked ahead and spicer is equally in the mix as new draftees

But u miss the point DrD There are no guarantees for immediate or long term performances fir high  draft positions and you should Understand this.

They are all footballers and human beings and are not robots. The NMFC recruits after 3/4 preseason is not a snap shot of all their regular form once the real games start.

You are placing too much pressure on high draft picks especially if they don't look good immediately Or are not up to your expectations.

So many things wrong about this post that again you need to be called out once again. This also proves time and time again your lack of footy judgement and knowledgeable

I find it bizarre that you continue to pot a first year player in Kozzy Pickett, yet more then willing to accept a plodder in Alex Neal Bullen the benefit of the doubt. He is a average player who like Oscar McDonald has been gifted far too many games time and time over the journey,  and one of the key reason we've been an average side of the last few years because we continue to carry average plodders like ANB and Oscar. It's only last year that Goodwin finally woke up to Oscar, hopefully he'll wake up to ANB.

And for your information, ANB did not play midfield back in 2017. This was the year Goodwin played him in that high half forward role. You're making up stuff just for the sake of it and have the stats and proof to provide that further.

At the end of the year I expect the likes of Bailey Laurie, Charlie Spargo and Kade Chandler to go straight past ANB because that will mean we've improved further as a team. I didn't name Kozzy because he's already sped straight past him as a player.

Was just reading that stK have been practising standing  5m ‘outside’ of the man-on-the-mark zone instead of actually manning the mark. You can move freely there. Didn’t see that in our practice match.  An interesting move. Feels counter to the spirit of the rule though so I kinda hope the AFL make it 10m+ to give the team with the ball an advantage if players try to do this

LOL. In 2017, he came 11th in the best and fairest and in 2018 he came 13th. So considering all of these flaws that you say, the club internally rated him highly. So who is right?  You or the experts at the club? Unless he has had a dramatic fall off in form during the peak of his career. I rest my case really.

I'm not sure what you see in Kozzy. Did you not see how he slips over at every contest? And his kicking for goal has been dreadful. I actually think he will be a decent enough player because he offers speed but other than speed I've seen no goal sense or an ability to slow down and have composure.

Come back to me when Kozzie has 2x best and fairest finishes as high as 11th and 13th.  At this stage, he's purely untapped potential.

Great clearance by Oliver, but the real hero in this passage is Harmes.
Starts the clip with a block on Cotchin, then blocks the tagger pursuing on Oliver.
2 blocks in 4 seconds - clearance, goal.

May be maturity and selflessness, may be the the influence of Yze as midfield coach, but this is the type of teamwork we need to see more of.

Watched that a few times great work by Harmes thats why he should play that role its where he has shown his best form

LOL so he played 18 games in 2017 and didn't finish top 10 in the best and fairest in a team that didn't play finals. Played 23 games in 2018 and was worse by finishing 13th. That on average is a poor finish by someone that played all year. Again proving how silly you look here. Finishing 11th and 13th in a best and fairest is not something to be proud of.

Me like many other on here see great potential in Kozzie because he showed talent in his first year of AFL football on the back of a season where there was basically no VFL team to develope and living in a suitcase.

If you want to go back on best and fairest results, where Alex Neal Bullen finish in 2019 and 2020?? In fact between Kozzie and ANB where did they both finish last year on comparable?

Kysaiah Pickett is also expected to feature in that round one clash against Fremantle, with the exciting small forward to return to Victoria on Sunday having flown to Perth last month for a family bereavement.

"Kysaiah will be back Sunday from Perth. Obviously, it's really tragic circumstances with his mother. He's been doing a lot of training away from the footy club, with some help over there from some people that are specialists. We're really confident that 'Kozzy' will be up and available for round one."

Good to see the experts rate kozzy highly  enough to let him slide straight into our round 1 side on the back of missing a month of AFL training hey Doc..

What I'm interested to see is what happens when Viney and Brayshaw come back - who goes out?  From last year you'd say Sparrow and Jordan.

But this role that Harmes plays in the centre square is what Viney seemed to do for much of last year - particularly if you have Oliver and Petracca as the other players in there.

great post. Harmes was bagged but had by far the greatest challenge on the ground, often under extreme pressure. he did cough it up early but teammates weren't in the right position for him. He is an ace in the sleeve for Goodwin and if he doesn't play him as a run with tagger we will be worse off for it.

Any other day in the season, with bloody poser, pseudo intellectual Cotchin he would have been given a fifty and a goal.

I'd also put Kozzie in the team if he was fit. But that's because we're bloody slow and we need his speed. He sure as hell isn't going to help us kick a score though. He spends more time slipping over than keeping his feet.

Your argument for the 11th and 13th in the best and fairest makes literally no sense. He played more games because he earnt his spot in the team. An 11th and 13th finish is an 11th and 13th finish, there's no other factors to go into it. Games played isn't a factor. Because the more games you played the more it highlights how important he was to the team in those years.  So let me know when Kozzie finishes 11th and 13th ok

We are now not a “slow” team. Even Balme & Gale acknowledged the fact after our practice game both saying “we were noticeably quicker”. That was without Pickett. You seem to be pedantic for the sake of it. I think ANB is a solid contributor & also seems to be a very popular team mate but unless he has a form resurgence...I can see a few other up & comers replace him. When Tim Lamb was talking about Sparrow, Chandler & Jordan ..he mentioned how they are now 3 year players with lots of upside . Pickett is just coming into his second season & I believe he has enormous upside & can’t understand the harsh judgment so early . I would prefer to take Jordan Lewis’s opinion than someone who spouts pretty meaningless stats !!

from friday's side to round 1 i suspect it will be

OUT: Baker, Jetta, ANB

IN: Brayshaw, Hibberd, Pickett

and jones for viney the following week or maybe an underwhelming chandler? which would be disappointing imo

Why are those three automatic  inclusions? First two have been injured and may end up with limited preparations. Picket has not been involved for a month. I would want all three to show good form in a game, at present there is little info to suggest that will happen.

Wow, Balme and Gale. 2 guys that probably see about 5% of the games that I see.  2 guys that don't even know the club, make a comment about a practice match in Cranbourne that meant nothing. I think we are quicker, but we are still pretty slow.

And for the record, T.Rivers showed a truck load more talent in his first season than Pickett. So it's got nothing to do with having unrealistic expectations on first year players. It's just that Pickett showed a lot of traits that I didn't like.

Sorry DRD but you notice a friend losing weight if you only see them every 3 months but not so much if you do every week.

Clearly in pace and ball movement our effort last Friday vs Tiges was a level above that effort on our  last MCG clash just before the Hub commencement.

Thst has nothing to do with what effort the opposition puts out.

And as judges over the period I would trust Balmy and Gale in these comments.

Lets see if we look fast vs Dogs on Monday.

(2) Kysaiah Pickett 2020 Highlight Reel - YouTube

Perhaps a little harsh on Pickett....he has some amazing traits for a 1st year player that we have not seen in a long time.  He will get better and be super important player for us.  The only trait i seen that i do not like is that he gives away too many frees from being little over zealous and not quite steadying for shots on goal.  Kid will be a gun though, your comments will look pretty silly as he develops.  Can only imagine what you think of the duds that have played for us.  Kossie certainly aint one of them!

I think Pickett will always be the guy with an amazing highlights package. But if there was a lowlights reel he would also have a very long one. I'm not getting sucked in to the highlights. I want at the very least a goal a game this year.

Yeah, you realise we have Ben Brown, Viney, Brayshaw, Melksham and maybe Jetta to add into the team.  That's 5/22 players that aren't quick. So don't worry, I'm not reading anything into a practice match. You should know better.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
