2020 Phantom Drafts & Rankings

Can someone explain why, if a club like Essendon really rate an NGA player  they wouldn't bid at 7 rather than 9? Surely that gives them a better chance of actually getting them, and if not their preferred players are still there and the matching club has to pay more. Why bid at the end of your run of picks?

I'm not trying to stereotype here, (okay maybe I am) but this is becoming a theme with private school boys..

Doesn't count for stereotyping if you are one, so I'd say...I'm not surprised. A couple of factors from my own experience - very sheltered and privileged which sounds lovely but also creates a lot of pressure, I'm sure those who have grown up with less don't want to hear about the ultimate in first world problems but there's a lot to induce anxiety when you're expected to follow a certain path and not given a lot of freedom to find your own. The second is leverage. These guys have successful (by some definition) parents used to getting what they want especially when it comes to their kids futures. Why are they going to play by the AFL's rules if they don't have to?

The best explanation is they aren't very smart.

Or possibly it does give them more freedom to trade that pick. Secure the 2 you really want first

Can only think (given Essendon's hand) that it's a tactic as they may entertain a trade which involves the Collingwood pick(s) that could be swallowed up by matching. In that event, Bombers would be keen to trade 9 rather than 7. Leak that you'll bid at nine and see if Pies will do a deal (at 9, they may just let Essendon have him). I think the Crows have legitimate interest.

Archie's manager is doing some back pedalling for him. didn-t-come-out-the-way-he-meant-top-10

"There have been suggestions Perkins' interview was in breach of draft rules.  The AFL has been contacted by AAP but they won't be making any comment".

Maybe his manager could give him a few media clues before the kid goes on air.

Thanks to both Gawndog98 and Goodoil for your bravery in committing to a phantom draft.  I like Goodoil’s lateral thinking on the potential pick trades. The one for Collingwood is particularly interesting - I think the way the Reef McInnes pick plays out is going to be an interesting aspect of the draft.  The Pies need a lifter and getting Elijah Hollands along with McInnes could be an important boost to their stocks and morale at the moment.

I have a bit of a tradition of my own at this time in the lead up to the draft where I pick a player of interest* and I’m going for Jake Bowey at pick 18 or 19. In some respects, I’m going against my grain because I think we have enough undersize players at the club already (nothing against Kozzy or Charlie but I have a view that there’s a limit to the number of smalls you can have on a list and I think we’re about there).

I usually try to get to a few NAB Cup games and like to make it for the finals. I have an association with the Sandy Dragons going back to the start of the competition and saw one or two of their games from last year.  I’ve also seen plenty of vision of Bowey as an underager and I think he would be one of the draft’s bargains if we can secure him at 18/19. Despite his 175cm stature, he ticks all of the boxes you need for a small forward. Persistent attack on the footy, excellent disposal and consistency.  He could just about be right to go from the start and can see him hitting Ben Brown on the chest. With Kozzy and Bowey at the big forward’s feet, the pressure on opposition defenders is going to be enormous. I think the comparison with Shai Bolton is not out of order and Bowey might also find himself playing in the midfield.

* the first time I tried this exercise at draft time, I picked out Nathan Jones and a year later I went for Chip Frawley but I haven’t  picked a Demon since.

I tipped this!!!

Back in form after all these years.

Also what's happened to Seamus Mitchell? Doesn't seem to be factored into any phantoms drafts that I can see and doesn't rate a mention in Cal's whispers for later selections among any clubs. Slipped back into late/rookie territory?

@goodoil was spot on, Mitchell to Hawks with the last pick in the 20s.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
