Zach Merrett plays as an inside mid but has an outside focused game. It’d be like having Lachie Hunter attend every centre bounce.

Either he or Essendon are in denial that the guy is actually a winger.

I rate the guy quite highly as a talent, but he is exposed when in rough stuff - a case of sleepy with light on syndrome.

If you can look past him being soft, he is exactly what we need on the wing; but last I heard he wanted to play inside.

Fyfe, Walters will play forward in their latter years. Cerra I think a bit more outside than inside? Maybe I’m mistaken.

Noted. He wins a lot of uncontested possession. But he also ranks highly on centre bounce attendances. My point is he is more an onballer than wingman and we have a logjam in the midfield.

Good question, we’ll see I suppose. All I was told was Zachary Williams and Angus were their targets. That’s all I got.

Trade rumours rarely age well, but this one aged badly so quickly that it actually went back in time to before Zac Williams came out and said that he was exploring free agency to a Melbourne based club!

That was about 5 minutes before you posted.

I didn’t say Williams was keen, the info came from someone at Fremantle and just said who their main targets were.

He goes to a lot of Centre bounces because they have a terrible midfield and we definitely need an outside mid more than a wingman.  You can manufacture a wing.

When did he say this?

Not sure if it's been raised, but if TMac isn't fit, it might be worth shopping him to Hawthorn; they seem to have the dark arts behind them in regards to fixing crocked players.  Don't know what we'd get for him, but at least it'd be an ease on the cap.

One of the main impacts of the cap is that you can only really afford up to 6 great players in a team, which means the rest have to at least bring effort, which so much of this lot do not do. I would be merciless with those who have not applied themselves.

Our weakest area (still) is up forward, with not enough stability or even strategy. Weid did well and should be given the chance to assert himself as the #1 forward / leader up there.

While we did play against weaker sides with him in, I see Jackson as the natural fit with Weidemann up forward, so much upside and run. Brown to support. For now.

Of the small forwards, Pickett is the only one I would lock in.  Keep Spargo and Hunt (if he pulls his head in) as they provide effort.  Hannan and Bennell (well...) are good finishers but apply no pressure so can go. Melksham should only play up forward and only be kept if he takes a salary reduction.

Could see Fritsch having some value in the market and he may be replaceable with Petty. If the club has an psychologists, they need to get his goal kicking back to 2019 standards by the start of R1 2021.

For the mids, we need to work out the Brayshaw / Viney conundrum.  We seemingly can't have them both in the team as they can't play other positions. I reckon there would be pretty big interest in Brayshaw, but I actually think he is the better player.  Harmes should be played as a tagger, crazy that he hasn't been.

The team should be built around Gawn, Oliver and Petracca.

I reckon Jetta and Jones will both retire (at least). Kade K could go too.

Baker and Landgon looked great on the wings and are well worth keeping with. I love AVB for his effort.  Probably wouldnt walk into our best 22, but a good player to have in the 2s teaching effort.

North fans still love Preuss, I wonder if we might get a pick for him?  Pretty redundant with Gawn, Jackson etc.

For the backs, I was largely happy with this unit this year so wouldn't change much.  May, Hibberd, Salem, Lever (needs a kick up the [censored]), Rivers and Tomlinson (!) should be persisted with. Id probably hang onto Smith as the tall back up.  Oscar probably has some worth in the market, it's worth testing. We also have Hore coming back.

For the others; the Wagners, ANB, Chandler, Sparrow, Kade K, Nietche, Jordan, Bedford, Dunkley and Bradtke are all making up the numbers and readily interchangeable.  Likely none will impact our future, unless they are on too much $$$.

Barrett suggesting disgruntlement towards the club from Hurley and Hooker too. You have to wonder if one of them could be squeezed out and involved in a McDonald trade. Hurley would be a decent 2nd tall in defense to plug in for a couple of years, and the club was vocal about chasing him in the past. Either way, let's get Saad.

I think with Hooker & Hurley potentially moving, McDonald starts to make a bit of sense as a tall utility to plug some gaps. Who knows, maybe we can throw Oscar their way too if they lose both. Ironically, Mitch Brown has showed he can play that utility role reasonably effectively in the last few weeks. Was very good on the weekend.

Zac Merrett from Essendon.. i reckon its worth having a chat. Worked with Goody at Essendon and played with Hibberd and Melksham as well.

A few senior players not happy at Essendon regarding direction of the club.

Yes, would be a terrific get, might be a bit of a bloodbath at the Bombers. Carlton will more or less be all over the same type of midfield targets that we would be and are probably willing to throw more cash than we are, so would be a contest for his services (along with those of Williams & Saad).

Hogan maybe? Did your source pass on the mail before or after Brayshaw's injury diagnosis came through, @Ethan Tremblay? Inclined to think that makes a deal a bit harder to get over the line, but then again, Hogan had a similar sounding issue when he crossed over to the Dockers.

Media are quiet on the trade period this year???

Seems like McClure, Morris, and the ch 7 bozos were all over it last year???

Anyone know why? Am i jumping the gun?

Langdon to dees was declared very early last year.

Probably down to the uncertainty around TPP, list numbers running quite deep into the season. Players, their agents and clubs probably (smartly) waiting to see what the landscape looked like before making calls to stay or follow the money/security elsewhere. Still don't know for sure what list sizes are and, accordingly what money is absolutely on offer.

The first round pick we gave them to get Pickett?

If Zach Merrett is on the cards as a potential option for us and we're not throwing the kitchen sink at him i'd be staggered.

He's EXACTLY what we need. not only does he add to our inside midfield depth, he can do what our current players can't and move to a wing or half back and be extremely damaging.

Bombers would likely want a significant deal to get him, especially if we're also looking at Saad

If Viney left Via Free agency and we got Band 1 compensation which would currently be pick 10, that might kick off a conversation

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
