Yes, exactly.

Our injuries and lack of a good Prep,  led into a myriad of issues,  which was also an issue with our skills, and ball use going forward.

I think the structure was poor,  barbecue of these things as well as the lack of ability for two-way running,  and also discipline issues. Our mids were not accountable enough and our defence floundered.

 

The wheels fell of.   When things go that bad, I don't think anyone can pinpoint,  down to exactly one area of blame.

I do not believe it was just game-style,  or coaching.

 

The fact that we arrived early...  in 2018,  before we were ready for it, only accentuates our poor 2019.

I think we'll be back to where we were at the beginning of that 2018 season,  as we build/develop our young players further,  as we are on that turntable of development.

 

Arriving early,  in that 2018 season,  hurt us a bit.   And I think expectations going into 2019 really cruelled us,  once things went wrong.

Left field idea that some will scoff at, and I'll preface this by asking: Who out of our mids has the most pesty niggling personality? Who has the best ability to go toe to toe with Cripps? Best build for it?

The answer is clearly Clarry. 

As good as Oliver has been these past seasons, maybe an accountable run with role for him would be a good starting point to the year. Maybe that would make space for Brayshaw, Petracca and Viney to be the ball hunting mids that feed it out or surge it fwd. If Brayshaw isn't accountable, he'll be dropped for another. If Oliver isn't accountable, well the coach will never drop him because he wins it too often. And fair enough. However Putting him into a tagging position does force his hand on becoming an endurance footballer that has to run all day.

Maybe this handball/kick ratio could actually only be improved by getting him to play an offensive tag instead of be at the coal face trying to win it.

Just a thought.

He hasn't trained as a mid and is very inexperienced in general. I think Cripps would lick his lips if Smith walked over to him next weekend!

I would just hope the club is prepared to gamble on a bank loan to pay his 2 years out at the end of year, if its more of the same on field for the next 16 matches.

Banking on a new coach turn around and final$ windfall in 2021 would surely be more cost effective than writing off 21' just to "save" a big payout.

No, but he has been training as a defender,  so not a big reach to play a run with.   And Cripps likes to push forward,  so Joel's training would be handy.  I think he has the build to do it, more than anyone else.

Doesn't mean he'd be in that role every week.

Or they could rotate different players against Cripps, Qtr by Qtr.   Petracca,  Oli,  Bray,  Jones.

Don't think it would do Clarry any harm to be accountable and could see him rise to the occasion.

The only thing we can do is Max feeding our Mids and the rest will take care of itself .   Keeping that part short. 

Smith is definitely not the person to go one on one with Cripps.  I am not a fan of his and find it amusing how he keeps being mentioned as a possible start up . When in his 11 games has he contributed to the side?  I can  go on.

Please prove us wrong Joel; but for a guy who has never played a particularly good game in his entire AFL career, he’s held in very high esteem on demonland.

I reckon Oliver would be keen for a big one on Saturday regardless of whether he spends time on Cripps or not.

Had a slightly sub par 2019, a very sub par round 1 and is now clearly behind Cripps in terms of who is the better player - after a close call in 2017/2018.

Smith was starting time show a few signs by round 19/20 of 2018 but as usual got injured at the wrong time for him.

He also played a belter of a game in defence against the Bulldogs in the 2017 pre season series.

There’s something there but he needs a good 12 weeks in the seniors to determine if the hype is actually warranted.

I'm currently watching the Queens Birthday game from 2018 and Joel Smith was the inclusion for Jake Lever.

Played a really impressive game in defence that day. Definitely has all the attributes to become a really good defender, but as already noted his body let's him down.

You originally posted that a failure against carlton and Goodwin would be gone.

As I replied he will at least see out his contract.

The current board know that you simply cannot keep changing coaches every few years, all it does is set the team back a number of years.

Good clubs now work the coach and get better personal around him as both Richmond an Collingwood have done.

I can see Goodwin being a long term coach of the MFC.
