It is a pity that gawn is still playing and Lyon retired long ago. I picked lyon but I wonder what the result would be in a few years time.

Lyon gets my vote as at today. The vote may change circa 2025.  Maxy may end up one of our greats if he can sustain his performance over the next 4-5 years and get a few more B&F and All-Australia selections... and a premiership.

Toughest one yet by far.
Gawn is in his prime and could finish his career with 4 or 5 All Australians if he can hold his form.

Lyon was another player marred by injuries and could have stacked on a ton of goals if. he was able to consistently play at full forward for the last few years of his career.

Will go Lyon, only just, and fully expect that if this poll is run again in 4 years, it'd ge Gawn.

Max is a great player and may end up being one of our best 5 ever. I think Lyon is alreday in that category. Also, Lyon is 5 time All Australian, not 3. Teams of teh year are recognised as ALl Australian. Garry was named CHB in team of the year in 1989 & 1990. Brings his total to 5 representative sides.

1989
B: A. Johnson, C. Langford, G. Pert.
HB: B. Lovett, G. Lyon, G. McKenna.
? D. Pritchard, P. Couch, G. Brown.
HF: N. Winmar, S. Kernahan, Gary Ablett.
F: B. Stoneham, J. Dunstall, A. Bews.
Foll: S. Madden, M. Bairstow.
Rover: J. Platten.
Inter: T. Daniher, T. Watson, M. Bayes, G. Williams.

1990
B: A. Collins, S. Silvagni, J. Worsfold.
HB: B. Lovett, G. Lyon, G. O’Donnell.
? D. Millane, A. Shaw (capt.). G. Wright.
HF: P. Daicos, S. Loewe, Gary Ablett.
F: S. Kernahan, J. Longmire, S. Russell.
Foll: S. Madden, C. Lewis.
Rover: A. McGuinness.
Inter: M. McGuane, M. Thompson, A. Liberatore, M. Tuck.
Coach: L. Matthews.

Garry achieved more and a better player at the peak of his powers. Max may finish his career as an MFC great, Lyon already is one.

Be interesting to see if Garry comes up against Stynes or Neitz in the final round. Both have a strong claim to the title!

Three Melbourne  reps in team of the year. Assuming that is Alan Johnson and Brett Lovett. Wow!

Yep that is Alan Johnson. Also shows how good our backline was!

Garry would be my choice as a player not as a clubman .  Have not forgiven him for backing the Merger  " in support of Tiger " .

Took the 2 young sons to one of those pre-season footy days at the Junction Oval in the mid 90’s and was waiting patiently at the table to get signatures, when Lyon casually leaned over to a teammate sitting next to him and said, “faark this is going to be a long day.”  Lost me forever at that point did the arrogant one.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
