From behind, just as cowardly.

He would thrive in today's game.

Only if he put on another 7kgs. His arms and legs were like string!

You must have been standing near me, then.  It was at the Lygon Street end and was a dirty, cheap head-high king hit by Matthews.

Matthews regularly got away with it. I hated him and everything he and the 'He-Men' of Hawthorn stood for. They were bully boy thugs, endorsed by a culture  which basically glorifies violence.

I was at Princess Park on the infamous Steve Smith Assault day as well...

Absolutely loved Flower.
Funny story when I was a kid I went into a Sportsco shop in Qld with my dees jersey on and number 2 on my back of course and the owner asked me how long I followed the dees for. We got to talking and bugger me i was talking with Jim Flower, Robbies brother. Small world and I got a part time job there too.
it’s funny how things happen in life sometimes.

I thought this thread was about Robbie.  Not Lethal.

You must be a genius. You may note, however, my reply was to Demonstone who commented on Matthews and his many assaults on Melbourne players.

Good game that.
A rare victory over the Dawks on their own dung heap.
Rhino Richards got his name that day when he ran through Dipper and booted a goal.
Also up our end ?

Sorry 'ditr', i shouldn't have quoted you,  for this post.

It was meant to be to everyone who were whinging about Lethal,  totally shifting the focus from pleasure for Robbie,  to pain from Lethal.

Like most others lucky enough to see Flower play, easily the best MFC player by a mile in my lifetime.  Freakish skills and a sixth sense for knowing how to avoid most of the hits, remembering this was a very violent time in the VFL.  He had amazing courage for a bloke who physically looked out of place.  I was lucky enough to have a beer with him a couple of years before he died, just a regular bloke who liked a chat, had absolutely no tickets on himself. Such a tragedy that he died without seeing Melbourne win a flag.

The goal at 1:49 against Hawthorn.
That was late in the last qr infront of me and he got a closeline shepard that should have been a free to Dawks.
Exciting game as a Melbourne supporter at the time as we were on the bottom as usual and the Hawks were on top and only lost by a kick.
Also read in Flowers book that the song was sung in the rooms by the players after the game despite the loss such was their excitement for pushing the dawks so close.
Which he found disappointing.

I was there too. I don't think they would have sung the song though. It just wouldn't be a possibility. Urban myth i am tipping.

The animal snuck up behind Smith and king hit him. I was 10. I saw it, i heard it and i never really got over it. By far and away the most violent sound i have heard.

Only repeating what the great man stated in his own book.

The reason for watching the Dees at their lowest ebb. When he died,I remember hearing Doug Hawkins in tears in his admiration for his skills.

If I remember  correctly, he was used at CHF in one game for the big V, despite being skin and bones, such were his prodigious skills!

I was the opposite end of the ground. The ball was nowhere them.

A masterstroke by barrassi. Smith was towelling Matthews up.

Lost all respect for Matthews that day. Thug.

Doing some reno's at home and found in a box the 2002 Aust Footy Legends rare vintage port bottle with Robbie on it and signed by him. Can't even remember buying the Port however it was a members only restricted edition.. Gave his records on the back and surprised he was only in the all Aust team only twice.  In any case I'm sure the Port will be still Ok and when it cools down up here in Qld I will open it and drink to him and hopefully plenty of wins this year.

What a great player he was.
