There comes a certain time when you know you're getting on a bit and that time is when you realise that there are no AFL players older than yourself and that your chances of being drafted have gone forever.

There appears to be some very handy 'prospects' in the early parts of this draft.  We get a swing at two if we split but IF we do we more than likely miss Serong who looks likely to go early (3 or 4?).  'Appears' on paper to be exactly what we need on the small forward front but like most of these options i'm only going on scouting reports or highlight vids.

Lower down there still appears to be some juicy morsels presenting themselves.

This is just my take on some of the stand outs.

The number in parenthesis is the latest ranking of the draft prospect courtesy of https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/category/power-rankings/ effective as at 7 Oct.

Not splitting the pick

??  Caleb Serong, Gippsland Power (3) - Small forward / Mid  B'day 9/2/2001 , 178cm / 83kg

Splitting the pick interests, say 6 down assuming we land a 6 with a mid 20s (approx) and Green is off the table (GWS) and we aren't looking at Flanders (another inside Mid)...

??  Dylan Stephens, Norwood (8) - Balanced Mid.  B'day 8/1/2001 , 182cm / 70 kg (Silk & Speed!).

??  Miles Bergman, Sandringham Dragons (17) - Mid/Forward.  B'day 18/10/2001 , 188cm / 77kg (the next Howe or Birdman?  Likes a goal from anywhere apparently).

??  Cameron Taheny, Norwood (22) - Medium Forward.  B'day 3/8/2001 , 184cm / 80kg (probably too small for our needs and we have similar with Melk but guy can time his leads beautifully and a solid overhead mark.  Looks to be very accurate in front also!).

Smokey Replacements for missing Serong if we split assuming we are targeting a small forward...

??  Cody Weightman, Dandy Stingrays (28) - Small Forward , B'day 15/01/2001 , 177cm / 73kg

??  Trent Bianco,  Oakleigh Chargers Captain (14) - Outside Mid.  B'day 20/01/2001 , 176cm / 70kg.

P.S.  just saw the rumour on Norf giving us pick 8 for 26 and a first rounder from 2020.  If so...the ideal for me is Serong @ 3 & Stephens @ 8!!!

I would not trade those picks ... stay in the draft!

Lol at Cody Weightman at 28. He will go 10-20, and I’d bet 15 down

I'm afraid my potential AFL career was cruelly cut short at a very young age by a tragic lack of talent and courage.

Tom Browne just reported that we are looking to trade pick 3 to GWS for pick 6 and a future 1st round.

Make it happen Mahoney!

Not sure I am keen on this. We will miss our on Young Serong and Stephens.

Kemp won’t play in 2020 so would defeat purpose drafting forward a year to take him and Ash plays like Jayden Hunt.

Who else could be in the frame for 6?

Makes sense, gets us back into the first round next year despite it being compromised. This may also open up options for us to trade up higher next year as other clubs looks to offload selections for later points. GWS can't give picks this year as they need them for Green so has to be a future first or a player. I suspect we will see this happen tomorrow as well as GWS I'd imagine would want the certainty of having both top selections rather than risk us dealing with other clubs or having the power to bid on Green.

Hope we are offering up Pick 3 for Papley and 9.

Pick 3 can go to Essendon for Dani

Dees take Papley with 8/9 for the draft.

Would be seriously good trade for us. We may have to throw something in, but I'd be happy to lose a 2nd or 3rd next year to get a first back.

I don’t think we need to chuck anything in as it’s a seriously good trade for GWS as well given the Greene situation. Genuine win-win.

Think we are all out of trash picks unfortunately.

You're probably right. Not sure what academy picks they have next year but the may get the double whammy of solving their current issue for next year.

6 & 8 would still land Stephens & Weightman.

That assumes we are staying in the draft and not looking to trade in a player.  I have issues with 8 being a little too high for Weightman.  But who am i to question.  If Taylor & the team have huge wraps and are intent on getting him in then they might not have been willing to risk something lower.

This may well be a late 'take' by Tom anyway as click bait.  Wouldn't get too caught up in it.

Would need someone to take Flanders in between for that to work.

@RalphyHeraldSun

GWS crazy keen to get pick 3 off Dees to get an early pick then academy star Tom Green when Sydney bids for him at 5. Would give six back and a future first rounder. Demons could turn 3 and next year’s 1st rounder into 6, 8 and GWS first rounder next year

We have a stronger position now with GWS. Bidding at 3 now bumps our pick 8 to 7. Really just further increases the value of 3 to them and the price for trading out pick 3.

This site is obsessed with Stephens, I don't think he is a top 10 prospect from what I have read and seen.

What we think or want is just a wish list WTM.  Taylor & Goody might agree with you.  Some of the draft site rankings suggest he is top 10 but like many of these trades you only really know how well your picks have gone many years afterwards ie; in hindsight.

Basing my view on his highlight reel and scouting reports.  Super risky but my view doesn't count.  Just an amature opinion at best.  As they say in the classics... "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

Pick 3 is a Nugget!

It is essentially 2 top 5 picks to GWS...

If we trade with GWS. We need to get a lot more than Pick 6 & 2020 first round. They beat us in that trade hands down, and we are the easy beats again.

A decent player needs to come with both of those picks. Caldwell please...

A phantom draft from August has him at 16 so you aren't far away on that one 247.

The AFL power ranking has him at 28 which is probably a very low (conservative) estimate as he came into contention with a bit of a late charge apparently.

In the September Phantom Draft for AFL.com.au he is 12..

The Giants 2020 first rounder may be say pick 15. in a heavily compromised draft it might only be worth a second rounder.

i don't think i'd be doing that deal.

i would be telling them we want a ready to go best 22 player and pick 6 for pick 3 and nothing else gets it done.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
