Right, but the posters who kept bringing up his prelim game a year or so back have a legitimate point yeh?

Tomlinson has been at GWS since their inception and has never been more than a bit player.

The fact that he was dropped in a final this year as a mature player says far more about how he valued. It's about his body of work.

I expect he'll help with our depth and provide competition for spots but as far as 'value' to our best 22 goes, I don't see much.

Sure, but I don't make my judgments on a couple of games.

Last year he had 21 disposals (15 kicks) and 7 marks in an elimination final.

The year before he had 26 disposals, 7 marks and 5 tackles in a prelim against the eventual premiers.

Worth looking deeper sometimes.

Fair enough, we're all going to see things differently. You can take your view from the 1 game he was dropped, I'm taking mine from the 80+ where he wasn't.

Don't think anyone has said they're expecting a superstar.

This year he played much deeper Finals than just an Elimination Final.

I watched closely, that is why I am wondering what he is going to bring to the MFC to IMPROVE our chances...

Did you even read my post mate? Read it again.

If I was a site admin things would look a bit different around here. As an example, in regard to Tomlinson I would make the following statement:

I hereby decree that any poster who is critical of recruiting Tomlinson (and costing us only salary cap space and a spot on the list I might add - an important consideration given the gws priority picks) is banned from at any point thereafter complaining about how bad the depth is at the MFC.

The punishment for breaching this rule will be having to change your avatar to a picture of Mark Neeld.

how isTomlinson going to IMPROVE our list?

He gives us a winger, a swingman and a backup ruck, which if you paid attention this year is sorely lacking.

Doesn't cost us a pick or a player. Important given our list spots vs draft picks situation.

Is a noted professional and great trainer.

Improves our depth, which if you paid attention this year is sorely lacking.

Has barely missed a game for years through injury, which if you paid attention this year is very important.

I'm not sure what else you want from a free agent willing to go to the 17th placed team?

You seem to demand improvement but not really understand how that actually looks.

1 game  = "body of work" in your books. That's fine. Tells me enough about how much to value your opinion on this.

Getting dropped for a clutch final having played over 100 league games says a lot about ones body-of-work, how they've developed over that period and where they currently sit in the pecking order on a clubs list. He had two howlers after that.

His body of work is a far more accurate assessment of his value compared to a single final a year ago where he played very well.

The outlier is that final. He has had far many more games of average football than great football.

If you still don't understand, I don't mind. Someone else can explain it to you.

STMJ: 'Judge him on one game'

Also STMJ: 'Don't judge him on one game'

Ok then.

He's exactly the kind of player we don't need.

Without knowing what the rationale for recruiting Tomlinson is I suspect that he is a solid citizen who can release other players to play in other positions.

May playing marking Wing/forward.

I suspect that we will be developing a number of forwards from within which should include OMac and Petty

So who do you suggest going after instead as doing nothing is going backwards, he will be a best 22 won’t cost picks and would command no more than a modest contract. If it’s a matter of him or frost I’d take him, he offers more utility round the ground and if our backline is fit frost wouldn’t be in the 22 imo as it is rare you need a permanent 3rd tall in the backline these days. A best 22 over a backup is the no brainer on that case

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
