Demonland 74,452 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Simon Goodwin has just spoken to the media ahead of tomorrow's clash with Fremantle. As a coaching group we wanted to look at ways that we could improve as a footy club. We think development is a really big part of our footy club and we are going back to the core of what we think really drives the development of our team. Goodwin on Lever: He’ll hopefully only miss one week, he’s got some bone bruising from the incident in the Collingwood game. It’s not his ACL so that’s a real positive for us. Goodwin on Hibberd: That plate that he had surgery on just lifted off the bone, he had that operated on straight after Queen’s Birthday so he’ll miss this week but be back next week. Goodwin on Hogan: Steven May will play on him, which we are looking forward to seeing. Two really good players, I think that’s going to be a great matchup for all of our supporters to watch. Goodwin on McDonald: He’s an important player for us, he’s a leader, we play him as a forward because we have a very inexperienced forward half. We need our experienced players out there, we need Tom McDonald to stand up for us and that’s what we are looking for him to do. We asked our players to take responsibility and look at the opportunities. They have looked at their opportunities individually and collectively as a team. We are not going to wait until the end of the year to reset and get better. We’ve tried to use the break as an opportunity to reset and say, how can we get better? We have implemented some things and the proof will be in the pudding. That’s all from Goody. MFC Twitter: https://twitter.com/melbournefc/status/1141850586762977281 1 1 Quote

Begs the question: With such a young/inexperienced group why did we stray from 'our core' of what drives development? Virtually no player has improved this year. Someone dropped the ball! Maybe they thought the 'core' was well drilled in so they made changes to go up another level. Glad they've identified it hasn't worked and looked to fix it rather than wait. 2 Quote
At the break of Gawn 4,515 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Still looking like he's a bit nervous at the start (like he has the past couple of weeks). He's clearly worried about the scrutiny. Makes a world of difference when you're winning and these sort of press conferences are just fluff like they were last year. 1 Quote
DubDee 26,682 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 good interview. puts the acid on T Mac to stand up. Tom is a proud man so hopefully he does something I really like the reshuffle of the coaches and not waiting until the end of the year to make these changes. Go Demons, give us something to cheer! 1 Quote

Probably pretty stressed - those guys have a lot to deal with. Quote
Sorry kids 635 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Now that is out of the way, coaching has been re jigged, injury situation has improved nothing short of 7/10 wins should be acceptable to anyone involved with the Club starting Saturday. Lets see. Quote

Lets see. We did just lose Lever and Hibberd to injury who are best 22 when everyone is fit, plus Garlett who would be on the fringe of that. We only replaced them with younger guys and ANB who are all (when everyone is fit) fringe players. I'm more interested in seeing the backline working together and forming strong partnerships, especially when Lever, Hibberd and Jetta are back and the forward line becoming more productive including better ball movement to them. I don;t really care now if we win 3/4/5/6/7 games on the way home, more about the functionality of the team and ensuring we have minimal delayed starts to the pre-season. 1 Quote

If we are losing that same backline won’t be functioning well, and the energy levels will be off. We need wins coming home Very Important..... 1 Quote

What I want to see is the backline with Lever, May, Jetta, Hibberd, Hore, Frost, OMac, Petty etc. all functioning well together more so than winning games. Yes winning is great but for the future, them knowing each others games and building trust is more important. I think that group could be the best backline in the comp but need to learn to play together since we haven't had them all to choose from so far this year. The forwards and mid-forward connection is something that can be improved upon quickly, from last year only Hogan is really missing, so there hasn't been a big change in personnel. Down back we've now got Lever, May and Hore to fully integrate. 1 Quote

He had enough acid dropped by about round 7/8 DD. Goody would have been better to have taken some pressure OFF with a 2 to 3 week stint at Casey IMO (or longer if needed ie; if showing little or no improvement there as well). A bit more time and space to find his mojo/form again and return once he had a few runs behind him and a bit of confidence (marking/leading/goals being scored etc at Casey and belief returning). 1 Quote

With Spargo and Omac out the confidence in the forward/defensive make up should improve a little and we should start seeing a few decent wins in the back half R&B. Pitty about Lever & Hibb though. Pruess will eventually need to come in for Tommy in order to see us really fire up up forward IMO. Aside from some pretty poor stoppage structure outside, lack of tempo slow play, forward half zone method and bog ordinary skill levels generally, i reckon mids & defenders have done ok. Hopefully Rawlings likes Pruess a tad more than Goody and allows him a few games in this 2nd half to see what he might have to offer before seasons end. Edited June 21, 2019 by Rusty Nails 1 Quote

I agree he should be dropped. i think it comes down to lack of replacements, but even then I'd play Preuss. he can't run out 4 quarters playing first ruck but he'd be fine in the 50 Quote

Everyone going hard and becoming a unit Lose games and the intensity drops, it all becomes too hard. This club needs to Win at all costs, whatever the ladder position Quote

Especially consecutive losses and more so with younger / rookie (sub 50 gamers) team members. Season's finish sooner, even some senior players can lose their mojo in a depressing environment bringing on early retirements or trade outs etc. Winners are grinners and the sponsors, fans, ratings, extra friday night appearances, increased memberships, improved bottom line, better facilities, better calibre of players looking to get on board ...will follow (barring a major stuff up) as the wins accrue. All teams have 3-4 best 22 out at stages during the year, it is no longer an excuse. What is it with backline obsession anyway. Sounds like the company line being spruiked before the Lever injury. 2 Quote

A winning culture of course is good, but did we get more out of the gold coast game this year or the West coast game? Great to get a win but when we can't make finals it's more important to get the team playing the right way together, wins will then come because of that. Quote

Honestly do you think we'll go into the 2020 season with more confidence because we win 5 games instead of 4? We'll go in with more confidence if the team is more trusting of each other and have better knowledge of each others games, which is why I want to see the backline together. We've got lots of guys there that have barely played together. 1 Quote

Mate the team will play the right way when they learn to win and accept nothing less. Honourable losses don’t cut it anymore. I know what you are saying. But winning is the only thing i will accept now. The Players, Coaches and Board must feel the same way. Wins mean Members resign for next year and sponsorship $$’s keep coming in Quote

I know what you mean by not accepting honourable losses but I see the bigger picture, being a premiership, as more important. Quote
