I think that is  true. I have noticed many times new players or particularly players from other clubs come to us with attributes that they ultimately lose with us. Foremost of those players was the way Bernie Vince played in his first year with us. Not saying he was not a very good pick up in all his years with us but his Adelaide style and confidence really stood out in that first year.

I don't think we coached it out of him. I think, instead, age caught up with him.

That was a handy feature of Lyon's game - he kept moving towards the incoming pill and was smart and athletic enough to respond to the vagaries of bounce with the pointed ball. It can be seen on the Dunkley vision ... nice.

He looked naturally intuitive,  and composed,  thru close traffic..

Also looks to have sure hands,  and strong overhead, Re  marking.  Judgement looked good,  and paced himself well.   How will he pick-up the tempo,  at AFL level ?????

Many seem to equate words like inside mid & hard at the ball as meaning too slow. 

It wouldn't surprise if he measures what he needs, to get the job done.   Time will tell what he brings.

Maybe midfield as some here say, but I hope he can play the third tall roaming forward role. I have a good feeling about him.too as long as we all give him time and good coaching.

Looking past him... and looking at the roles he plays,  I think might show the reasons of his selection.?

Does it point to our limited players as half-forwards...  see AVB (injury)  Hannan (injury)   And Petracca (fitness/desire) ???   Melksham (already 27Yrs old)

 

I think our Mid Section Lacks...  good drivers in heavy traffic.  Being able to step thru the traffic with the ball,  before releasing it to better options,  for delivery.

Most of our mids,  when under-pressure,  play  Hot-Potato  from one to the other whilst being corralled.    We need some who can step-thru close attention.   As much as we need Wingers.

I think the hot potato game planning is a sort of cheating, not in the fair play sense but in the sense of being a short cut to a better game and more reliable game plan. When it comes off it is a million dollars and when it doesnt, well  we know what happens. I reckon the last time that game plan worked in a GF was in the Peter Hudson days at Hawthorn. But Huddo was a genuine freak.

So i think you just answered your own question...it’s not “cheating” it’s risk for reward and the last time the chaos ball game plan worked in a GF I dare say was the Bulldogs in 2016.

Yeah, I was referring to the times when we flick it off to one another,  failing to get it outside the corral.

I think when we handle the ball well,  we don't seem to be in so tight-together.

 

The  hot-potato,  I reckon is a worry,  because we get anxious as-a club Nature... have done for decades,  that I've seen.   When we're anxious & under pressure,  we tend to over-use the footy.  coughing it up.

So this rapid fire handball,  is sort of against our weaker nature ???  I think it will take a lot for US,  to conquer this play.

Quick ball use is always a good thing,  IF you can do it well.

Earlier this season we got corralled trying to use the Hot-Potato against the Cats??   and others,  just as we did 3 yrs ago playing the Saints under Edi'shat.  When Hickey troubled Max.?

That's definitely the plan but it looks like they've allocated #47-50 to Casey listed players. I'm guessing Austin Bradtke is #46.

Maybe #61 is the next vacant number?
