Trade Petracca?

Realise that the mere suggestion will send some ballistic but when you’re staring down a wooden spoon finish all scenarios must be canvassed. 

What would we get for him? Is his trade cachè as good now as it’s ever going to be? Is he Col Sylvia Mk2 set to flatter-to-deceive his entire career? Pertinent questions to consider.

5 seasons in there appears to be some writing on the wall with this guy. We have to entertain  the idea that trading him out could conceivably improve the list heading into 2020.

Would be a big call but maybe we can get a better player with a pick in the 10-20 range for him? A quicker player with surer hands and a tank, who kicks accurately and does not go missing for 3/4’s most games.

Fleeting cameos and flashes of brilliance with self-satisfied tongue sticking are not enough. We need players who offer more than this.

Short answer - no

But not unreasonable to suggest and explore. Would need to be proven player or pick 1-10.

Yes, we’ve got such a great history of trading. Let him join the likes of Howe, Dunn, Hogan, Kent, Watts etc. No problem.

Would be a high risk, low reward. Completely pointless. Wouldn't be worth anywhere between pick 1-10 on what he's shown. Clubs are hesitant to trade on potential anymore. Would rather keep him and hope he has that breakout season we all know he's capable of.

Where have we heard that line before? Seem to recall same said year upon year about another enigmatic No.2 draft pick we banked our hopes on in the mid 2000’s.

Agree though that we would not get a top 10 pick for Petracca. But what if we could find an Isaac Smith type for a pick in the 10-20 range? It is worth considering.

I would have zero faith in our recruiters drafting a player better than Petracca with picks 10-20. Not that I rate Petracca terribly highly, just no faith and too risky. Better the devil you know.

So the question you have to ask yourself. Would you prepare to roll the dice on trading Trac for a pick between 20-25, and hoping that player comes on, or sticking fat with Trac hoping he comes on?

If it was me personally, I'd prefer the latter. If we applied the same precedence on every single player we know had potential based on the experienced we had with Sylvia,  teams would be constantly trading players left right and centre.

St Kilda probably had the same frustration with Billings, and now he is having the best season ever and some are saying one of their most important players. Harmes came out of nowhere and finishing 3rd in our B&F in a successful year. I understand your frustration, but everyone is having a down year.

The type of player who all of us put our hopes in for a top 4 finish, and his work matches our current last place on the ladder.

 

For a top 10 pick, hell yes, but no other club is that stupid.

- Get say pick 15 for Petracca and on trade to GWS for Patton. 

- With pick 20 or thereabouts get that young Isaac Smith type we desperately need.

Clean hands.  Can break a tackle, which is underrated in today's footy.  Needs to be more selfish around 50m when his big kicking is more reliable than his short 15-20m passes.

Has pulled out of 1.5 contests this year, unlike Oliver and Viney...which in addition to lack of pace are the only downsides.

But the ability to break a tackle and have clean hands is priceless.

 

 

We are trying to make up the fact that we unnecessarily pulled ourselves out of the super-draft, when all these kids are making an impact for Port and Geelong etc...  We have to sleep it the bed that Goody/Viney peed in, rather than trying to chase a loss and throwing the baby out with bathwater.

if you were to trade petracca (and it would be pretty silly to do so imo), you'd want it to be for someone who can immediately impact for us, not something speculative; think phillips from the pies to add outside run, ed langdon plus freo's first rounder for trac and our second round pick, etc. etc.

i think trading trac would be incredibly short-sighted

what i don't understand is that his best footy seems to be played as an impact mid who starts forward and rotates through the middle, but apart from a section in the third quarter against the swans (when we caught longmire on the hop, with brayshaw's turnover hooray henry kicks starting on the bench), he's basically been stationed inside 50 for the majority of the year

he is too much of a ground-ball player to play as a forward target - he is only just over six foot tall, is not a marking player but instead is better when the ball is on the turf, so why we continue to play him as a forward target has me beat

Clean hands?? We must watch footy in parallel universes because I see a guy who panics and fumbles more often than not. And how about that terrible hand to foot ball drop in his kick action that makes him a 30% proposition from 40m directly in front? 

I usually rate your player assessments TGR but like others in the footy media you chronically overrate CP5. He ‘ain’t that good.

Why do so many on here think we will get Rowell. We likely only get him if we finish last which we won’t. Our back half of the year will be much better once we get players back
