As many have alluded on here, we have an imbalance on our list. Not enough outside leaning players that can spread and use the ball cleanly from the contest.

We get too many dirty clearances at the moment. Part of this is positioning and tactics at stoppages, but I think we all agree that we need to recruit some more specific skilled outside players

Another list weakness is creative and quick small crumbing forwards who can put on pressure as well.

I think we could also do with another key forward who can take a contested mark.

The game plan is an issue too... to reliant on dominating  the contested ball and clearances. Not enough defensive tactics if plan A doesn’t work.

Hopefully the coaches can recognise that our game style and personal needs adjusting to suit the 666 rules... because we are going to get left for dead in the comp if we keep the same recruiting philosophy... outside play and skill is more important than ever with 666 ... you still need to win your share of contests and clearances but we need to have players that can create space from clearances and deliver it well and create quality opportunities for our forwards as well.

So how do we fix It ?

Use what we have

Baker, Hunt , KK, Harmes  hopefully as the season goes theses types of players can have a real impact on our team.

We really need Baker to come on with his speed (not sure of his skills though! )

Hunt-  we need the coaches to to improve his kicking because he has all the other tools to thrive.

Hopefully Chandler and and Bedford provide some pressure and creativity up forward eventually but they are just making their way in the game at the moment

also need Garlett to comeback into the side and have an impact, but his pressure needs to be up on last year.

Players to Target form other Clubs

Obviously we need to use our 1st round pick this year .. sadly it could be quite early

But we need an injection of elite talent ... look what Conor Rozee and Zac Butters has done for Port Adelaide

but i think we should be using 2nd, 3rd And 4th Round picks  to look at players that could really help our list.

players I have identified that could realistically be poached or are not getting  regular opportunities are:

Jordan Gallucci (Adel)

Tom Cutler and Lewis Taylor (Bris)

Callum Brown and Josh Daicos (Coll)

Ed Langdon (Frem)

Jordan Cunico (Geel)

Ben Ainsworth (GC)

Aydin Johnson and Kane Farrell (Port)

Shai Bolton and Connor Mennadue (Rich)

Ben Long ( Stk ) * although just signed a contract I believe

Matthew Ling and Ryley Stoddart (Syd)

Jackson Nelson (WCE)

Bailey Dale, Lucas Webb and Patrick Lipinski ( WB)

What do people think ?

I'm still annoyed we got KK. he's outside but he isnt that quick. The next draft I want our top 3 or 4 picks to be lightning quick. even if we take some mature age recruits. we're just so bloody slow.

I'd look at menadue and Langdon.

Langdon, Ainsworth and Bolton

(IMO) The only current key players who should still be on our list if a premiership window opens years from now are -

Oliver

Brayshaw

Lever

Weideman

Rebuild & recruiting for all other positions must begin now. Last year was a dream. We are years away from threatening for a premiership. The likes of Gawn, T.McDonald & May etc will be long retired.

Needs :-  man on man skills

#  a Clint Bizzel sized/styled defender..... low centre of gravity, balanced, good hands, strong overhead, agile, skilled runner..... will suit the 666 rule.

#  Johnathon Patton

#  a Cyril Rioli type rover..... not a forward-pocket specialist....  I wonder if Cyril's available ?

#  an undersized mobile CHF....  must be quick, agile, skilled, great reader of play, quick-witted...  does Dermie have any illegitimate sons out there, anywhere ?

#  Nippy running players with courage..... who can mark the ball.

We must go for John Patton. It will allow Tommy to go back all our key positions solved

B: JETTA, MAY, LEVER

HB: HIBBERD, T.MCDONALD, FRITSCH

C : HARMES, OLIVER, SALEM

HF: HANNAN, WEIDEMAN, VANDENBERG

F: J.SMITH, PATTON, MELKSHAM

FOLL: GAWN, VINEY, BRAYSHAW

IC: LOCKHART, PETRACCA, C.WAGNER, HUNT

That will be a team that will get us back in the finals.

No he's not but Day and don't laugh Casboult are. I'd look at those 2 as well.

Just now, John Demonic said:

Give up the chase, Hawthorn were already linked to him in an article.

We just lost Hogan we also have money in the bank. Let the bidding war begin!

Hawthorn are still one of the oldest teams in the comp, they would have budgeted far more money than us from their future retirements including Roughhead. And that's not even to mention that he'd probably take unders to go there compared to us. No chance, look elsewhere.

Did someone mention in another thread Josh Dunkley is OOC this year? I wouldn’t mind having a go at him.

No but Hawks are into him big time.   Many clubs looked last time... but his contract dollars are apparently high...  he's coming out of contract soon.

hasn't Patton done his knee about 3 times already? I don't think he'd be on my shopping list unless he came very cheap.

Yes,  2x on one knee,  last time the other knee...  The idea is to not pay to highly.

The man can play,  established player,  no development time,  straight in to seniors. ready to go.

Even IF he was with one expensive year left to honour in his contract... would be worth it on reduced coin,  thereafter.

You cannot get everything shiny and new  'DD'.   We would never be able to afford them all.

RFA at the end of 2020

I understand that but I also think we have enough injury prone players on our list as it is.

So you disagree with Clarko's Hawks chasing him,  since last year then

I 'd like you to tell us what it is they're getting wrong  'DD' ?

The Demon stalwart surpassed the number of his father's appearances for the club towards the end of the season. As he approaches his thirties, his pace is inevitably slowing, and he is likely to explore alternative opportunities beyond the team's midfield.

The Demon premiership defender who has the reputation the master of intercept possessions as well as great leadership qualities managed only eight senior games this season as he battled injury and form, prompting speculation that he might be enticed to look elsewhere.

“Disco” took his time (four seasons) but the mid-season draftee has been a shining light of Melbourne's campaign, improving to become a versatile option at either end of the ground. He has great marking skills which allows him to play as a marking target up forward or an intercepting defender down back.

The skipper delivered another outstanding season, leading the team from the front, participating in every game, and earning club champion honours, while also securing an equal record eighth All-Australian blazer as a ruckman.  Max Gawn is arguably the greatest exponent of ruck skills in the history of the game; an exceptional leader who has guided the club to a premiership, through the challenging times that followed, and now into the next phase of its storied history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #12 Koltyn Tholstrup

It was a frustrating season for the former number 13 draft selection, who failed to build momentum in his second campaign; Tholstrup played only nine games, having been omitted twice and substituted out three times. However, he demonstrated promising signs in the midfield at Casey towards the end of the season, and big things are anticipated from him in the coming years.

Clayton Oliver, a four-time best and fairest winner at the club, has navigated a challenging period over the past two years, marked by injuries and personal issues, but has demonstrated promising signs suggesting a return to his optimal form in 2025. He is presently contracted to the club for an additional five years, with a substantial annual salary of approximately $1.7 million in the final seasons of his agreement. All at Melbourne are eagerly anticipating his resurgence to his previous peak performance levels.
