First let me say that I have confidence in our FD in this area.

The only major blunder recently was Toumpas and there is no need to go into that again.

We clearly have identified  the contested beast as our main target and have done well in that respect. What I am concerned about is that type still appears our main aim.

Many on here acknowledge our lack of pace, skill and small goal kicking  forwards. Also another tall forward.

I posted at the time  that we should chase Schache and Finlayson, who were tall mobile players, who while not stars, would come cheaply and would be great Insurance for Hogan leaving and injuries or loss of form to the Mac’s or Frost/Weid.They incidentally kicked 9 goals between them in their latest game. They also were gettable cheaply, even though Finlayson stayed at the Giants.

i am not posting this to blow my own trumpet as they still may fail long term but rather to highlight a somewhat blinkered approach to our needs.

IMO we always needed pace, skill and small goal kicking forwards. Yes we took Bedford, but he is the only one that I can see we have and he is some time off, if he even makes it.

Guys like McCarthy, Dahlhaus Lyons and Rohan, just as examples of recycled pacy skilful  players are doing well at their new clubs . They are not champions but filled needs and didn't cost a lot.

Shiel’s pace from the contest killed us on Friday.

I just think we have erred in only targeting the contested beast at the expense of other types.

I think the group we got in this season only has Bedford with real pace.

I still maintain we are a slow, poorly skilled side and contested footy can’t be our only trick, though I acknowledge it’s importance.

I just think we have an unbalanced list and it is hurting us.

You had me until you mentioned Gary Rohan.  Hes the fast version of ANB.

Dalhaus is a spud too.

You have my vote Mr. Leg, add we deleted a 50 goal KPF with no replacement in sight.

Jordon has skill.

Chandler and Bedford have pace.

Unfortunately Neitschke is injured.

Hore was the real blunder should have went for someone like Hind.

No one could see T.MAC having the year that he's had. Weid needs time.

Hunt and Lockhart are looking good in their new roles though.

I am not as worried about our small forwards and pace as I was two weeks ago....  just hope they can both keep improving

I think we need some new coaching blood. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a major overhaul next season. I was disappointed to see Ratten go to the Saints - he would be a good get for us.

Our recruiting has been unidimensional- big bodied contested bulls with dubious skills. Fritsch is the exception.

Oliver not skilful enough for you?

Not that I think they are great players, but rather they are filling needs and came cheaply.

Rohan is nothing like ANB,. he can kick straight, run, take a mark, not fumble, stay on his feet and is a footballer.

Well done, you picked out one player from our list, who incidentally is my favourite player and our best draft pick of many years.

Agreed and who comes in if they are injured?

Problem is that we gave made numerous plays for established players. You still need to continue with young talent. I think we should not be trading first round picks for a few years.

That is what seperates those that win flags from the MFC. We never seem to see the obvious. The Weid will never be a 50 goal a year KPF and TMac has never looked like being one either. We deleted Hogan with the hope both would make significant improvement. Hope seldom gets the result as we are seeing.

We will have a good early pick this year let's see if we can snag another like Oliver.

Of course he has been fantastic. The point I was trying to make that compared to most sides we are slow and turn the ball over a lot.

Agree.

My point was that there was Insurance there for the taking, but all we concentrated on was the contested beast.

Schache and Finlayson were gettable cheap options and would have us with a better balanced list. Hogan was always a chance to go home and realistically more than just a chance. What did we do about it by way of replacement?

We all knew Jeffy was probably past his best and Spargo was limited in pace, height, kicking distance etc, yet the  only one of that type in the last few years I think, has been Bedford. Someone said Lockhart but I think he is another contested player foremost, but looking likely at least.

Look at how many small forwards at the Cats and Lions for example. The Lions also have more and better talls than us as well. They also have 2 of our former ruckmen. They are going places and are on the way to finals most likely this year.

Weid has a lot of development left. He could easily be a 50 goal year kpf. Although I think a number of posters assumed that the Cats final last year was his breakout and that he would just continue to deliver at that level. He has a lot of work to do to deliver at that level consistently. Thinking that he would replace Hogan was foolish. Hogan is a contested marking freak. I would back a 17 year Hogan over Weid right now. Weid will make it, he just needs the ball delivered to him better and a bit more development.

TMac kicked over 50 last year. I think I'm missing what you are putting down here. Do you mean that TMac only kicked 50 because Hogan was there?

I was very sad the day the news came out that Hogan was heading home. We lost the trade as soon as he decided to leave. No way we're we going to get what he was worth. Mainly because he hadn't lived up to his potential in his time with us.

There were off field issues! Did Tmac kick 50. Then my error however we have not replaced Hogan's 50. We have different different views on Weid, if he cannot show more than he has in the first 3 games this year then IMO in ain't t there to show

And we knew that for a few years and what did we do about a possible replacement or extra Insurance for the inevitable, him leaving?

It would appear we replaced him with a full back who cannot stay on the park.

Except when T. Mac kicked 53 goals last year.

I suppose the aim was to stop more goals than Jesse kicked.

May will be ok.

  • POSTGAME: Sydney

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.

  • CASEY: Northern Bullants

The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons have a golden opportunity to build on last week’s stirring win by toppling Sydney at the MCG. A victory today would keep them firmly in the hunt for a finals spot and help them stay in touch with the pack chasing a place in the Top 8. Can the Dees make it two in a row and bring down the Swans?
