If May escapes suspension then it's pretty much a dream prognosis for the walking wounded. JKH looked liked an ACL or broken tibia live - just bone bruising. Harmes has gone from 6+ weeks out (Demonland prognosis at the time) to a certain starter for Round 1. 

I'd happily trade a 7 point loss for the form Joel Smith showed today but the ease in which Brisbane moved the ball worried me a fair bit.

It was never going to be 6 weeks... even if a broken compound fracture.

Worst would have been two weeks...  for the skin to heal (Re infections) and for the pin and bone to mold into the break, so as to take the loads of AFL

He still may not be right next week (if things don;'t go well)...  but will be fine for the next one.

 

It might even be smarter if he does not  'tag'  next week (not so much tackling next week)... ahead of the Cats game and

his reunion with Joel Selby, feeding the ducks down by the Pusssy Willow.

    I would prefer May to go in low on the block, hunched over, to stop the runner going by him. He will get caught out again,  some time with his method.  A good chance of missing games in the future.

    Feet never left the ground. That kid had absolutely no awareness. The ball was still within 5 metres. Initial contact was to the chest, it may have clipped his chin. Injury report should be favourable. Next case

    May will surely get 1 week (2 if the MRO is in a crap mood) and we’ll be back to the dream defensive duo of O Mac and Frost for Port Adelaide.

    Frost should play I think against Port if Ryder plays.

    Frost to give Max a chopout in the ruck.  He can come on from the bench, with our Mids resting forward this year. 

    Frosty's pace will be handy thru the midfield area, whilst Tall Maxy hangs out deep forward, for a juicy long bomb.

    Having watched the replay after seeing the game live, a few of my casual observations:-

    — Hunt, while his disposal is still a concern, was best used as a forward. In fact he was the best of the small forwards we trialled today. He is ahead of spargo in that position at the moment in my view.

    - We were trialling players in numerous positions all day, while Brisbane played to their structure and their set up remained consistent 

    - our kicking inside 50 is a concern still. We must lead at the ball and lower the eyes. Too many bombs to the ‘hot spot’, despite being outnumbered ahead of the ball.

    - ANB is a complete scrubber and shirks contests but loves cheap goals from inside 15metres

    - Oliver had the fumbles. He wasn’t on his Pat Malone.

    - Joel Smith offers plenty. Versatile and has a go.

    - Billy Stretch offers nothing at the moment. Extremely disappointing.

     

    - the new rules have actually hurt our game plan. We relied on guys coming off the back of the square to create contested ball. Our strength has been impeded by the new rules.

    Seems to me Berry threw his head back to exaggerate for a free kick but ending up hitting his head on the hard ground. This vision should be shown to every player at every club to demonstrate the folly of trying to elicit free kicks from fair bumps. Done clumsily, it can cause injury to yourself. Unfortunately for May, I don't think the Tribunal will agree with me.

    If I recall correctly, by the time finals came round last year we actually went back to a more traditional 6-6-6 structure, and no more silly centre bounce setups. Thus, we should be well adjusted to this set up.

    I agree, but I think it will be short term pain. Goody has been able to build a very solid game plan over the last few years, and I'll back him in to make the right tweaks to ensure we aren't impeded too much. It might take some game time to perfect it, but we will get there.

    ANB is absolute rubbish, it was him that caused the injury to Fritsch by shoving Daniel Rich towards his lower legs. I dont care about his stupid pressure acts  he fumbles and goes to ground far too often. I would rather put time into Corey Wagner who is cleaner and adds a bit more zip.

    I am also perplexed what the coaches see in Oscar McDonald. Harry Petty played a better gane last week and he was left out of the side for some unkown reason.

    The quicker Petty develops the sooner that pushes Oscar out hopefully.

    Glad we agree on ANB, but Petty is a taco. One of the sloppiest footballers I’ve seen since Oscar McDonald debuted. I’d be concerned if we are relying on him developing

    Reading this forum at Bangkok Airport whilst waiting for the Melbourne Flight. 

    I honestly thought we had lost by 10-12 goals. 

    Still 2 weeks till the serious stuff begins

    We have no idea what the coaches instructions were.

    If maggots hadn't have started behaving like maggots, none of this Brisbane sookiness would have fostered itself. Gains out of it would be Brisbane to play in the Eight......... bottom eight.

    Also, can Petracca start nailing his shots on goal. Some of his pings are so hollywood and unrealistic. Needs to be more team focussed or actually work on his accuracy

    Our defensive pressure was a disgrace today. The Eric Hipwood winning a 1 on 4 ground ball contest being a prime example in the first qtr when the heat was on.

    I apologise if I’ve upset the apologists around here.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
