The problem from that, Jaded, is that while racism, etc seems to be on the decline,

I'm not so sure it is 'Chazz'...

Let's say in our realm of AFL football that the outward expression of racism seems to be on the decline even though you get the odd case like the current Betts incident.

I have a feeling that it still bubbles away under the surface.

In its own peculiar way social media lets us know there's a long way to go before we get any semblance of togetherness, understanding, acceptance & tolerance.

I'm a big believer in two of MLK's maxims @Mazer Rackham

That hope for the sake of staying positive is just self indulgent and sentimentalism.

I also believe that the arc of history is long but it bends towards justice. I also have hope that future generations, using the internet shiteshow that exists today as a reference, will avoid the mistakes of this generation.

Racists have recently been emboldened by nationalists who happen to have been able to climb the greasy pole to the top (or at least to have a level of influence they don't deserve) in a number of jurisdictions. Not every nationalist is a racist and vice versa, but those that are happen to have very large mouths.

I happen to prefer loud mouths who shout in support of their football team, even if it's our opponents. That's a healthy way of expressing one's self and does not offend (I mean in its true meaning, rather than in the playful world of being "offended" by someone supporting another club.)

Quote of the year if not the decade. Donald Trump would be proud.

From The Age today.

Prominent Collingwood cheer squad member Joffa Corfe said on Thursday that the grand final incident was “news to me”.

“In all my time in the Collingwood cheer squad, which is getting on to a long while, I’ve never heard any racism, nothing at all,” he said.

“I’d be the first one to stand up and do something about it, and to hear that a cheer squad member was racist is really disappointing.”.

I'm always flabbergasted that people still do this sort of stuff.  I mean, what in the world does it achieve?

I agree that they should be named and shamed.  Deleting the post almost gives them the anonymity they don't deserve.

We must know from which teams this repeat offending occurs or is characteristic amongst its fans. If it is on the field, umpires would know.

Never listened to the President?

"No one says nuthin' racist in our cheer squad. We don't believe in none o' that stuff. It's so f***in' boring anyways, them cars just go round and round and f***in' round. If I heard any one of them buggers talkin' about Lewis F***in' Hamilton or Daniel F***in' Ricky ... Ricko ... the Aussie one ... they'd be straight out! I would be shocked to the core to hear one of our Collingwood bruvvas 'n' sistas talkin' about racist. One of me best mates drove a Holden once so I know what I'm talkin' about."

I think there's an innocent explanation here. Obviously Joffa has never been to a Collingwood match before.

It’s like he’s speaking a different dialect of English...

Oh, here we go with the manufactured outrage on the Collingwood president again, the man who single handedly saved them from oblivion 20-something years ago.

Look, he's not racist. He just noticed a resemblance between a Sydney player and a giant gorilla, and mentioned it to a huge audience on his radio show. What's wrong with that??

Nor is he anti-women. He just suggested to his huge radio audience that one woman that he took a dislike to be gruesomely murdered. It. Was. A. Joke. !?!?!

Nor is he anti-disabled. He just casually and readily attacked some stranger on their big night who didn't toss a coin to his liking. On national TV.

Nothing to see here!

You’re right Mazer; I’m a dreadful person.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
