I see that you really do have all the worries of the world Jane.

This must be a very stressful decision!

My experience of life tells me that you can't have your cake and eat it.

Most people would kill to have these choices.

So your big decision does sound a trifle boastful and indulgent.

Sorry Jane, I can't feel sorry for you.

It seems you may be a public servant, academic or bureaucrat that finds making a decision difficult.

For me its a no brainer.

Work conference, boring. Holiday, replaceable, any time. Winning finals and the GF is a lifetime experience and memory. If you want to cash in on a free airfare for an Italian holiday, I feel even less sorry for you.

If you live in many parts of Melbourne, and, in country Victoria, people don't have holidays or if they do, they save to go to the Murray or down to Rosebud.

Now here's an idea, just go with your gut!

Otherwise, you may end up blaming everyone else for the wrong decision.

Wow. I'm starting to think that you're not really Ernest Hemingway. The real Hemingway would have condensed all that down to the second last line and gone off to the bar for a drink.

I normally enjoy reading your posts; they are often eloquent and thoughtful. This one not so.

To Jane02

Get a grip. To risk missing a possible demons GF just for work is unconscionable.

Change job or tell the conference that you know it all and it's not worth attending and get someone else to take good notes.

Quite right, on the money. I have too much time on my hands at the moment. I actually like Jane's post and regret my embellished meanderings.  This often happens after I write something as I spiral into recriminations and shame and start thinking about drowning my sorrows.

In regard to my real persona, you are aware of "split personality" or as my psychiatrist calls it these days ""dissociative identity disorder.""

Explains everything.

Thanks for your critique.

Very diplomatic.

Spur of the moment can bring you undone.

Big decision to make here. I have a work conference next September in Italy that I have to attend.

If I have a holiday before the conference I will be back for the GF but will miss all of the other finals..

If I have my holiday after the conference I will miss the GF but most possibly be around for the first two rounds of finals.

Its too far to travel for just the conference.

Any advice? What would you do?

Absolute no brainer - you've seen finals wins.  GF option is a must.

That is how I feel. When Collingwood and St Kilda played for GF and there was a draw, my husband was at the first GF but we flew out that night for an overseas trip so he missed the second week and subsequent win. He still tells me it was one of his biggest regrets.

He barracks for Collingwood Jane, I'm sure he's got a suitcase full of regrets to choose from.

Wow - sorry I asked. I actually work in palliative care so I am not a public servant, academic or bureaucrat - just a nurse. Nor am I being boastful.

I have no intention of blaming anyone - as fellow Demon supporters I just wanted to throw it out there and see what others would do in my shoes.

Sorry Jane. My comments were meant to be ironic not serious. I am rarely serious. Nevertheless my apologies.

Put holiday first. It sounds as if you will deserve it when the time comes around.

Now you really are talking shyt Ernie. Miss a Melbourne Flag, are you insane? (Can a dead man be insane?)

Jane get a grip, send me your holiday tickets and go to the grand final, enjoy yourself. For me sadly I will be in Italy watching on TV.

Devious and mischievous.

No they won't. They are both soon to turn 29. They have 2, maybe 3 years left.

Id bet on 3-4 years .

So not 4-5 years, like you posted.

Even 3 is a stretch for 29 year olds. I'd say 2, maybe 3. Let's bookmark it.

Hypothetically, if the Demons won the Premiership in 2019 I would cry tears of joy like the rest of us here.

I have thought about painting myself red and blue and running around naked...but it's not worth getting arrested for.

Probably get drunk and go to the celebrations the next day. I would definitely want a photo of me and my Dad with the Demon's newest Premiership cup.

Good on you, Jane ?

No such thing as "just a nurse". Spoken with unnecessary humility.

It would be good if we could all head out to federation square and celebrate as its right in the middle of melb.

Can then do a bit of a pub crawl around the city, ending up at the casino to have a flutter and check out a band in the Groove lounge.

I went there after our Geelong finals win and it was full of Melbourne supporters celebrating wildly.

Sounds like a Liberal Party celebration. The boys doing a pub crawl.

I would suggest quotas be introduced immediately.

I was faced with a similar choice.

My job is usually Monday to Friday but I was required to work Grand Final Saturday this year. I unfortunately let the cat out of the bag by asking about whether I would have to work on the 29th (also my birthday) thus robbing me of the chance of pulling an 'unexpected' sickie.

If we advance to that part of the year, I won't be as unprepared.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
