  •  McGovern officially joins Blues in the three-team trade, and Saints agree to send Hickey to West Coast with the Eagles giving us their second-round pick.

That was very generous of them!  ?

• The news that Dayne Beams wishes to return to Victoria and play for Collingwood dominated today on NAB AFL Trade Radio. While he has not yet requested a trade, Beams would like to get back to the Magpies if a trade can be worked out.

• Collingwood still has some waiting to do with defender Tom Langdon, who is yet to recommit to the club. Sydney and Fremantle are going hard at the 24-year-old, and that in turn is delaying Dan Hannebery’s wish to be traded to be St Kilda. Many felt that trade was set to happen today, but Saints fans should still be confident in the deal getting done.

• Port Adelaide traded into the top 10 of the draft as part of their likely bid to land the best South Australian talent in the country. They handed over picks 11, 23 and 30 to Fremantle to get their hands on pick six. The Dockers will likely use these selections to help pick up Rory Lobb and potentially Jesse Hogan.

• Fremantle appear to be out of the running for Dees spearhead Jesse Hogan. Their football operations manager stated late today that the club will be ceasing their pursuit of the dynamic tall forward because, "what Melbourne would be seeking for a trade would not be possible for our club to meet." (In other words, the Demons refused to consider their shake down deal).

• This could change the landscape of the NAB AFL Trade Period, with Melbourne potentially now out of the race for Steven May.

• Tom Scully has announced that he wishes to be traded from the Giants to Hawthorn and has completed a medical with the Hawks.

• When it came to deals done, Dean Kent made his way to St Kilda, and Dom Tyson and Braydon Preuss completed a straight swap.

• The Blues landed another ex-Giant, with Will Setterfield heading to Carlton (along with pick 71) in exchange for pick 43 and a 2019 second round pick.

• Premiership Swan Dan Hannebery joined the Saints on a five-year deal, with St Kilda trading pick 39 and its future second-round pick in return for Hannebery and pick 28.

• Two days remain in the AFL trade period and a few dominos still need to fall before the Wednesday night deadline.

• The likes of Lachie Neale, Jesse Hogan, Steven May, Tom Scully, Dylan Shiel and Dayne Beams are all contracted players yet to land at their clubs of choice.

• Collingwood however, re-signed defender Tom Langdon who turned down offers from Sydney and Fremantle to stay with the Magpies.

• The Western Bulldogs got a trade done, bringing in Richmond forward Sam Lloyd for pick 64.

• Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni said his club remains open to trading pick one, should an enticing offer come their way.

• With tomorrow the penultimate day of the Trade Period and with teams running out of time to get deals done, it is expected to be a busy one!

• The penultimate day of the trade period saw five players move clubs, with Gold Coast heavily involved.

• The Suns lost midfielder Aaron Hall to North Melbourne for pick 68, a pick that was then traded to Adelaide for a future fourth round selection.

• Pick 68 was then immediately on-traded by the Crows to Richmond for forward Tyson Stengle.

• The Suns also traded away former top 10 draft pick Jack Scrimshaw to Hawthorn for an exchange of future selections.

• Gold Coast landed Geelong defender George Horlin-Smith for pick 59.

• Tom $cully officially became a Hawk, traded for a future fourth round selection (considerably cheaper than his original price almost a decade ago ?)

One might turn out to be an O'Rourke clone, whilst the other could be so broken down he might need to be taken out back and shot.

Possibly. But Whorethorn do it every year.

Very Shrewd club, i want the MFC to be similar

sensible risk management

Matt Thompson just said after the break they'll cross to the MFC.

Could be interviewing Josh Mahoney.

Basically club wanted to improve 3 areas while imrpoving draft hand and did so at the expense of Hogan and Tyson. May and Hogan's impact at each others club will be highlighted all year. The one thing we need is Kade and Preuss to level up and ease the burden. Also 23 and 28 can get us some cracking players in the draft to replace Tyson and Kent.

*All pick numbers accurate at time of trade

Hawks, Pies, Bombers, Tigers etc have all improved their list significantly. Will be tough to even make the 8 next year.

We have bolstered our defence but lost a key forward so break even at best.

Luckily our list is young and talented so we should see some natural growth.

Hopefully the Weed has T Mac or Viney as a training mentor. We need the Weed!!

an interesting year awaits

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
