Well his prevarication is giving me a pain in the arse - it’s only fair that he gets one.

We should definitely be trying to secure a mid-teens pick as well as 5.

I would be surprised and that is the worst case scenario.

An option (I'm being a bit creative):

  • pick 5 2018
  • a swap of 2019 first round picks.  Hopefully, in 2019 that converts to us receiving pick 5/6/7 and give up pick 17/18.  ie a significant 2019 first round upgrade for us.

To me that is a good compromise between Freo's 2019 1st round pick or a second round pick.

I advocated this same deal a few days ago and reckon it sits about right.

We get pick 5 and an upgraded first rounder (likely To be a pick between 5 - 10) in 2019.

Freo get Hogan and stay in the first round of 2019, albeit at a later pick (14+).

It’s a deal which puts the onus on Freo to back themselves to rise up the ladder with Hogan.

I’d be happy with this trade.

Typical Mahoney, always flinching first. I hope this trade no longer happens as at the rate it’s going it will be a 3rd rounder for Hogan.

Pick 5 by itself would have Freo paying more than we did for Lever. Anything on top is just making the difference greater

Much needed comebacks to re-wright the sinking ship that is the Australian Test team!

How does that work - didn't we hand them our first round pick (10) plus our first round this year

last time I checked that is two first rounds picks - what am I missing ??

Yes, I have also been advocating for quite a while that #5 and a mid first round pick to get the job done.  But I think that is a little different to what I proposed above, albeit the results have similarities.

My suggestion of a swap of 2019 first round picks leaves Freo with something substantial (our 2019 1st pick) rather than just coughing up #5 and a mid 1st round.

I think he is referring to value of points.

Then what do we give up for May and KK? Love to keep pick 5 or do we need to convert that pick 5 for 2 teen picks.

points only come into it if matching academy/fs bids.

Because that wasn't the full deal, only part of it. There were other picks moved about plus pick 5 is a much better pick than pick 10 and pick 16.

Overall it was the equivalent of about pick 7.

AFC might have been working on the premise that MFC finish in bottom 5 or 6 teams this year - they wouldn't have been the only ones

On that basis they would receive last year (10) , this year (1 to say 6) how does that stack up with 5 on a points basis - I honestly don't know but I know which option I'd prefer

The SA club swill be knocking Mahoney's door down to get it.  Crows have picks 8, 13, 16 and 20.  I reckon they would give up 8 with 13 or 16.

We give 8 to GCS for May.  Deal done!!  Net result we keep 13 or 16 and pocket Freo's 1st round 2019 pick!!  Happy days!!

Pick 5 will go out immediately for May.

So May is more valuable than Hogan ? Personally I don't think so

Yes that gives them a chance of getting Rankine. I'd push for pick 8 and a 3rd rounder for May and KK

The points are used for bidding on academy/FS players but it comes from an academic study looking at the relative worth of draft picks.

It seems to be pretty close, of you think about how much you'd pay to do pick swaps. For example, 10 and 16 together are about as valuable pick 3 or 2 (but we got other assets from Adelaide, so it went down to about 7).

If you wanted pick 1 you'd probably trade at least pick 5 and 12 for it to be fair.

If we got 5 and a pick better than 13 then it's basically worth pick 1 in terms of its historical value to the club, which makes sense for Hogan.

The points value is a pretty good indicator of player/pick value which is why they use it when they can.

Personally, I believe May's girth is evidence he's a spud muncher, to say the very least.

SA boys Lukosius and Rankine set to go top 3. Pick 5 won’t get them to the Adelaide clubs.

Freo: Get hogan and our 1st round next year

dees: get pick 5 and freo 1st round next year

we then trade freos 1st rounder next year for May and KK (this could potentially be pick 1-6)

we take pick 5 to the draft and hope rankine is available

Rozee still a very good player in the 2-8 range

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
