Here is a thread on Big Footy discussing the pros and cons of putting on a Collingwood sponsored event for local Magpie fans to watch last night's game in Perth.

If they can't do it easily not much chance for lesser clubs such as ourselves.

PS: My favourite post:

"Everybody just go visit my parents, I'll send you the address. They have foxtel and are pies mad. Mum's cooking leaves a little to be desired but i'm sure they'll appreciate the company. There is a second fridge in the garage, but if you get desperate just do an ice run and fill the eskies. See you all there! Good time to arrive is about 90 minutes before the first bounce so you can discuss in depth which player is the most handsome at the club (Mums favourite topic). "

It has to be Friday night! Surely... It’s the only common sense decision.

The stupidity of the AFL, they screw everything up! The West Coast prelim is locked for Saturday twilight/night. The Richmond prelim is locked for 7.50pm EST the Friday night. This means:

  • The winner of Collingwood v GWS gets less than 6 days to recover before their Friday night match against Richmond
  • The winner of Hawthorn v Melbourne gets 8 days to prepare for the Saturday prelim in Perth
  • Whoever wins v West Coast gets ~6.5 days to recover for the Grand Final, losing half a day for rest/recovery in transit (3 hours travel + 2 hours in time zone)
  • The winner of Richmond v Col/GWS get ~8 days to recover for the GF, with significantly less transit as all 3 are east-coast clubs

If they reversed the nights of the prelims every team would have received a 7 day break between all remaining finals, with an extra half-day for whoever has to fly over from Perth (to compensate for the half day lost in transit). Richmond could have played their prelim on Saturday arvo @ 2.10pm, to allow nearly 7 full days recovery before the GF (keeping in mind Richmond already had 2 weeks off, so they're hardly being screwed over. As it stands, every team except Richmond are disadvantaged).

They could also have scheduled both matches in a Friday night double-header (no overlap with Richmond prelim @ 6.20pm EST, West Coast prelim @ 6.50pm WST) but that still leaves GWS/Collingwood with a 6 days break vs Richmond.

The schedule is set to give Rich the extra day before the GF as reward for finishing on top of the ladder.

As for the other Prelim the start time isn't 'locked in': " West Coast v winner of first semi-final (Hawthorn or Melbourne) at Optus Stadium, time tbc ."  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-09-09/who-plays-who-in-week-two-of-finals

AFL policy is Grand Finalists be back in their home state by Saturday night of the Prelim.  They will start the game in time to ensure that.  They may even start at the traditional 2.10pm which is twilight in Vic and players will be home well before midnight.

We have a really good 2018 record of winning after difficult road trips:  Alice, Darwin, Perth.  Lets wait and see what time the game is and if we make it before worrying about turnaround time.  Whatever time it is I'm sure the club and players will manage it well, be it the Hawks or Demons.

Not me.  My post was putting some perspective on Saberfang's worry about the run to the GF.

I'm a one week at a time person ?

I can see a loss coming, if our noise is traveling too far ahead, of the competition immediately before of us.

Lower the eyes guys.

Flights to Perth from Melbourne through the roof already.

This is where the AFL and competing clubs need to organise several jumbo's at cheap prices. Well I can dream.

So, if we beat Hawthorn, do we play WC on the Friday or Saturday night the week after? Seems pretty unfair to give a Victorian team a Saturday night match in Perth the week before a daytime Grand Final.

Should be a Friday night match. Seeing the winner of Melbourne V "the poo & wee's" is on a Friday the AFL need to give the Victorian team maximum break before the G.F.

Safer to eat a sandwich made in Melbourne (slightly stale) than the roadhouses (too fatty). Done the road trip 8 times as family on dad's side is from there.

Yeah the AFL is run by a bunch of Numb Skulls! They don’t have a clue... ?

Thanks you may well be right and I suspect you are..... but perhaps time to redefine the journey ... Route 66 and all that

must say I looked at the "Eucla" motel and let us say that it did not inspire my roaming spirit.Mind you they or somewhere near had a big kangaroo statue.

PS Did a road trip through Thailand last year. (good roads). Anyway the hotels down south specialised in big animal statues. Ended up staying in a place with a big yellow boxing kangaroo outside... and no it was not on the tourist route.

I'm starting to think a busloads of Demons a la Priscilla Queen of the Desert .... now that would be a trip !!

I know you didn't make the system 'Lucifer' but this doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons.

The first is surely the AFL would like to promote the GF as the marquee game of the season and as such every attempt should be made to try & get an even & engaging contest. A handicap based on the top team getting an advantage doesn't really promote this.

Secondly, who said Richmond were going to win the Prelim? Do GWS (7th place) deserve the reward if they happen to make it through to the GF.

Used to go to Thailand twice a year and drove many times. Very game of you to go down south as the natives are very restless there. I'm generalizing  but many come up north (Pattaya & Phuket) and seem to run all the crooked businesses to rip off westerners. Now a bus trip could be fun.

Very good points, rjay.

As we know the AFL works in mysterious ways.  No logic.

LOL about assuming Richmond will win the Preim.  You are so right - it seems a foregone conclusion in most people's minds. I fell for it as well!

As has the scribe at AFL House.  From their media release: Auld also said Richmond has been given what could be an extra day's break heading into the Grand Final as a reward for finishing top in the home and away season.

south west side is fine... the south east is where it can get hairy.

Surprised that more people haven't discovered the joys of driving Asia. Malaysia and Thailand are so easy and the price of travel by comparison to Oz is almost zero. I stay well clear of Phuket etc.

If you ever get time look up Lake Toba in Northern Sumatra.

I'm wondering if I should go early and try to get flights to Perth with my million frequent flyer points.... too soon?

Yes too soon, CALM DOWN!

definitely go now .. because they won't be there come Friday night... the real problem will be the match tickets.. as the last game in Perth it will be a very very hot ticket

PS Think like a Hawthorn supporter... they are probably booking next years GF as well as this one !!

Right now Qantas flights are about $900 return PP, Jetstar $860. Christ if we win, it's going to be an expensive next weekend!

recall Collingwood supporters saying the Perth return fare went to $1500 or thereabouts when their game was confirmed

Yep I wouldn't be surprised. To fly with points right now is about 130,000 return! What a joke!

No point worrying about it at the moment. If we win, I'll be so bloody happy and then we can have another stressful weekend working out ticket and game logistics.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If you’re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footy—you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Casey’s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down there—and good luck!
