Love Robbie Gray but at 31yo start of next season if you look at the Lewis & Mitchell trades he would be worth peanuts on the trade table.

Pick 51/87 or a trade for Garlett should get it done...

...and yes I'm not serious but I don't think Port are either.

Robbie Grey + pick 10 for Pick 5 would do it, we get Grey for 1 or 2 years, and PA get a shot at a SA gun

7 senior spots + Tyson, Kent & Hoges, reckon VDB stays

1. May

2. KK

3. Preuss

4. Bedford

5. TSmith (upgrade)

6. Bedford

7. Pick 33

8. Pick 43

9. Pick 50

10. -

Buckle in for a long turbulent ride through the trade period.

Marcus Adams nominating Brisbane complicates matters for us because it will impact the Neale trade and make Collingwood more keen on May.  The Hogan and Neale deals are linked, however much we might want them to be separate.

The KK deal will probably be linked to the May deal too.

Lobb apparently nominating Freo only complicates things further.

Gaff not going to Norf probably means they are less desperate to move Preuss on for salary cap relief.

I expect we'll be stalemated on the Hogan, May, KK and Preuss deals until other clubs resolve their deals.  The only things we might hear progress on are the ones we don't want to hear like VDB and Kent.

Strap in for plenty of poster pre-trade hysteria.

I can do Bells job for him right now...

Trade 1:

Neale to Brisbane for pick 5.

Trade 2:

Pick 5 & 2019 first to  Melbourne for Hogan & 2019 second

Trade 3:

Pick 6 to GWS for Rory Lobb and a second

Trade 4:

Pick 5 to GCS for MAY & KK

I think Losing Neale would mean that Freo will be finishing around the same mark again next year even with Lobb & Hogan.

But for years to come once their young mid guns mature with that forward line they will be very good.

Sounds nice but won't happen.

Freo have already said a single 1st rounder is not enough for Neale and who can blame them when he has finished 1, 2, 1 in their BnF over the past 3 years.  Then there's no way they will want to trade both top 10 picks this year - they will want to retain one for sure and that means doing some later pick deal for Lobb - and they only have 6 and 79 right now.

Lobb & a second which would value him 12+ which I would say is about right.

Forget the points.  They can't be used to value every trade.

We would hopefully have another high draft pick from freo

Geelong Cats have traded Lincoln McCarthy, Rd 3 (54), Rd 4 (57) to the Brisbane Lions for Rd 3 (42), Rd 4 (60

Getting in deeper.  Brisbane's pick hand weakened further with this trade and they now have 5, 23, 54, 57 for Neale and Adams.  Brisbane's future picks will have to be on the table - they'll be banking on improving next year too which is very reasonable.

Oh you know, might be a quirking idea to keep someone we’ve put a lot of time into developing as a one on one defender as a rookie and like, hmmm avoid MORE list turnover. Just a thought though, don’t let it get in the way of the spring clean out attitude.

Well they do know best at the end of the day. Personally thought there might have been enough for a rookie spot but that's an armchair opinion.

Dion’s club mentor, one Neville Jetta was delisted and re rookied....and what a disaster that turned out to be.

Love for yes

Dean Towers. Any interest as a delisted free agent. Might be handy for depth given we could lose up to 12 players off the 2018 list.  Just a thought.

Is there a way we can package up pick 62 and 65 to one of the clubs looking to accrue points? I could probably work it myself, but the hard bit is knowing which clubs want the points and what they’ve already got.

Looking at the chart, I think if we package them up with one more lower pick (pick 50), we should be able to get in to the top 30, which would be a decent result. I don’t know if there are any buyers out there though. In: Preuss, top 30 pick. Out: Kent, Tyson, pick 50.

Off the top of my head - Sydney, Pies and (I think North) have a father son.  I think Brisbane have an Affiliated Academy player.  North have an NGA player.  All those are points based.   But I think Syd and Brisb have already traded themselves into a position to draft those players.

So North and Pies the most likely candidates for a pick upgrade package.

Also, we might take Toby Bedford as our NGA so we might keep points to draft him rather than use a 'real' pick for him.

As an aside, we might be keeping our really, really late (80 +) picks to draft our rookies T Smith, Keilty, depending on how the trade period works our/how many players we want on our senior list.

North have a father son (30+) and an academy (5-15). But if they were going to give us the better pick they probably would've done it by now.

Collingwood have an academy (10-30), a father son (20-40) and even another later academy. Could be an option but they might not have many list spaces.

This draft is very shallow, teams won't want to give up good picks for trash unless it's a huge point win.

I think our best option is to wait until draft night and do some live trades. Use picks in the 60's to move up a few marginal spots with the better 3 picks we already have to get 3 players we want.

Then fill the list with extra rookie spots or delisted players. Guys like McKenna, Flippers, Max King and DJ never really gave us anything. We aren't losing ground if we replace them with similar gambles. Sure it would be nice to replace them with quality but give me the best 40 players we can find and worry about the last 4 spots.

Those 2 picks are worth 213 points or around pick pick 55, so maybe we could get a lower 50s pick but it won't be anything brilliant. These type of deals are the back end (steak knives) to other player trades, or will be the ones that get worked out after the player trade period finishes on Wednesday - there's an extra 2 days for picks to be traded.

Pick trading can continue after the Trade period deadline and also at the Draft so there's no rush.

The AFL scrapped having to use picks for rookie upgrade @Lucifer's Hero - anyway it doesn't really matter because they are the last picks so it's academic - could be pick 128 and 144.

Are you sure the need for picks to draft rookies to the seniors list has been scrapped?

The last I recall is an existing rookie can play in the seniors without waiting for a LTI to be 'upgraded' during the season but they aren't a listed player as such (ie very different contract) unless drafted as such.  Hence the use of pick 80 + and agree they could be pick 128 or 144 etc. to draft them.

Would be happy to learn more.  Cheers.

Nope looks like I was wrong @Lucifer's Hero - rule is as it always was ...

From AFL Rules at http://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/AFL/Files/AFL-Rules-June-2017.PDF

Quote

(b) Primary List A Club may apply to the AFL to transfer a Player or Players from its Rookie List onto its Primary List: (i) on the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the National Draft Selection Meeting under Rule 6.1 by lodging with the AFL the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 33. In which case, the Club shall forfeit its last selection or, if more than one player, its last and each previous draft selection at the National AFL Draft Selection meeting.

So who the hell are we getting in to fill all our empty list spots???

Let's give Tommy bugg a call back?

12th October wrap up.

8 delisted/retired. 36 spots

Vandenburg resigns ?

2 traded out. Kent and Tyson.

1 traded in. Preuss.

Likely trade in Kade Kolodjashnij.

?? Hogan hopefully he stays and tears it apart in 2019.  Likely retain

xx Steven May. Not considered given Hogan to stay

Keilty upgrade to senior list

Back to 36 spots.  Need more pace and run. Another ball winning Midfielder for depth.  Need backup small defender as backup for Jetta.

Probably:

+1 delisted free agent

+5 draftees. # 36  46  54 62  65

+2 rookies.  # 15, 33

can't see us picking up a delisted free agent or 5 draftees. It will be a slightly more empty list than previously but thats not a bad thing because instead of paying 40 blokes a more spread out amount we have 35 blokes who are paid a little bit more and perform a lot more than the other 5 spots would.

Bedford wont be drafted with a pick therefore most likely picks 62&65 will be towards him when a bid comes so only drafting 4 players is a pretty decent crack in a strong draft and with KK on the way too and maybe, a very big maybe on Ben Long from StK.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
