Yes. We older Gen remember the absolute Humiliation that Whorethorn threw at us that day in ‘88.

You cannot read about that stuff, nor ‘87. You had to be there, and 31 years later we still wonder if we are going to make it.

Meanwhile excluding ‘88, Whorethorn have won 6 more Flags to have 13 on display.

More than the MFC

88? Forgotten 2000 already?

So Lewis is dropped... Who is his replacement?

You're spot on here, mate.  Not only that but the 50 metre penalty was a soft as they come with Walters going down like he'd been shot.

Lewis is doing far more positive than negative for our side and there's simply no chance he gets dropped.

Hang on!

I know.  I'm as surprised as you are that SWYL has finally matured in his views.

:roos:

He probably won't be bothered, but I reckon he would have a case.  What he did was no worse than the pushing, shoving and blocking that would go on around the stoppages during a game.  Or he could ask Michael Walters to pay it, as had he hit someone else who doesn't have a pea heart it wouldn't have even been a 50 metre penalty.

From the vision shown on television Lewis connected with Walters' arm: the rest was Hollywood.

I don't see how this equals May's hit from behind on Higgins on the monetary scale of things.

Then again, what hasn't been mentioned is before May hit Higgins they were involved in a contest and landed on top of each other. You just see there's 'involvement' between the two as the camera follows the ball further into North's forward line. I would guess Higgins delivered a snipe or two at this point and when May got up he retaliated.

It amazes me that the sniper who starts a conflict, if his victim strikes back, is treated as the innocent victim and the retaliator as the aggressor and the fall guy who pays the fine or who gets rubbed out: witness Hogan against Lamb last year...

Bernie has the same Finals experience, coming into September as Jordan Lewis does he?

So amusing. We still like Choir boys to represent the MFC arond here.

When i was at School Big Carl would lift the elbow at least 3 times a game. Playing for Melboune and against us.

September is a tough month, as it should be

Bernie? Choir boy?

Lost me on that one....

Nope, but they are both aging, and need rests.   Just like thoroughbreds need rests from work, they all do.

Bernie back this week, and a week, Or 2, off for Jordan, is how I would plan it.

71/2  weeks to Springtime.

nowza time to rest those weary legs,   before we get serious.

No time for a rest. Work is to be done.

Bernie is an asset but he doesn’t have the Finals experience of Lewis. We need him out there.

you have no idea; rest is required for the older and the younguns, from time to time.  All your mantra of 'work to be done' is just wishful thoughts based in nought.

just like saty, based in nought.

We need Bernie and Lew in September, and we want them fit and fresh.   To aid the likes of Fritsch, and Oscar, etc.

And we need to recruit more maturity, as these old codgers age.

Bernie doesn't need it, as he is mature and smart anyway.   It's Not about stats swyl,  finals stats;,,  its about composure, & that is mostly in older minds.

All the talent in the world is useless without it.

No good resting players if we don’t make it to September

Holidays LoL...  being professional means doing the smart things to get the most out of the team, and the list. Resting bernie the last 2 weeks hasn't hurt us, but will advantage us for the next 6 - 7 weeks.
Same can be said for Lewis.

IMO Bernie's legs look fitter than Lewis's ,,, so I reckon Lew would reap more rewards than Bernie,  from a rest.

It will help us, moving towards September.

There is no point having a handful of 30+ Yr olds, with massive game numbers,  and then 3qtrs of a list all under 60 games.

We need to give games to our young, where we can, and at smart times.

Lewis was bought in because of his September experience

not to sit in the Grandstand. If we don’t make Finals that experience is useless.

I've read that some posters think Lewis just falls over a lot but this takes the cake. No need to exhort him to squibbing!

afl.com says that Lewis fined $2000 for a stray elbow! Rule of the week!  What is a stray elbow? The word stray is not in the rules. The word elbow is not in the rules so how can that be?

I don't know if you realise yet swyl, but this week and next week are NOT September... that's still 7 weeks away.

Freshening an older player up in July, is the prime time to do it.

If we lose games now, we are out. Maybe YOU don’t realize that

There is a week off before finals begin

you have little faith swyl.

I think we will play finals no matter in 2018, with or without Lewis, or others.  We are far more than a one man band, and we will make them without Maxy, if need be.

The trick is to rest those who need rest, drop those who aren't earning their place, and to promote those who are ready.

Hopefully Keilty gets a shot now, before we get any closer to September.

August is NOT the time to experiment with players and with form.

July is our last chance to find a Lever replacement.

Our Captains don’t have it. Lewis does

It is now the 'Clarkson' free after he complained to Gil over a morning coffee.  Might add Hawks were/are one of the worst offenders.

Sometimes umpires pay it sometimes they don't.  Remember the first rule of umpiring:  If it is a 50/50 call penalise Melbourne!!

You got that wrong, LH. Terribly wrong and moreso because it is a frequent, week-to-week  outcome right across the ground. The first rule of umpiring is: ' IF IT'S A 30 (OTHER TEAM) TO 70  (MFC) OR HIGHER, (MFC) CALL, PENALISE MELBOURNE. FURTHERMORE, IF THE MFC ARE GOING TO SCORE FROM THE DECISION, IT IS MANDATORILY A PENALTY AGAINST THE MFC.'

You should have checked with Razor Ray before this post, as he would have put you right. Any doubts, ring Gil for a confirmation.

Now, the second rule of umpiring is: ????????? (Fill this space.....................)

So, take a risk on Keilty and whomever else against one or more of Dogs, Cats (away), Crows (Away).

That sounds like good risk free experimentation to me.

I sure hope you have an inside line to the upper echelons of the AFL exec and can, for sure, say that they've already conspired to ensure MFC limps into the finals.

We are limping now since Lever went down.

We entered the season limping with regard to TMc and Viney...  when all those 3 got together, we hit our straps.  Then Lever went down.

We have been battling to find something that will work  at half back since that time.  Since then Oscar started to struggle a bit and Harry Petty experiment didn't workout.

So to imply we are traveling well,,, and we should not take any risks now, in July, is crazy.

Now is the time to try to get that back pivot sorted out, as best we can.

Personally myself I would bite he bullet and send TMc back to CHB for this year, and play Hogan & Weide, up forward, and Pedo where required.

I actually thought Frost played well and i know he can be a bit meh at times, but i actually like the look of our backline a lot more now that hes in (i.e. since Lever went down i haven't liked it). I'd happily play him the rest of the year.

No we don't,,, we need his experience in September.  not as much Right-Now...   and we want him physically and mentally fit & ready, in September.

If we cannot get to September without Lewis,,, then we should not be there anyway.

We have the players, 'young maybe';  but they have to learn to steer the ship themselves,,, and put the things they've learned into actions.

I'd rather them try that now without 'Lew' for 2 matches,,, and bring back Bernie now, and play Jones as defensive mid. Him and Bernie keeping a close eye on our back-half.

We need that experience your talking about,,, for 8 weeks, starting in August.

What we need now is 'runners', and some added speed.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
