Preseason Training - Week commencing 05/03/18

Did any intrepid Demonlanders head down to training today?

Photographer Wayne Ludbey was there.

Went for a look just after 10 but didn't stay for too long.

No Jetta, Lewis, ANB, Vanders or McKenna. Harmes doing a bit of kicking with Crossy then some laps.

Nice to see T Smith, J Smith, Weeds, Garlett and Tyson back in with the main group and of course Viney who was winning the footy in tight in one drill I saw.

Didn't take note off too much happening but one half of the main group were doing a bit of half court simulation stuff that looked very fast and crisp with the other half working the ball from congestion. Then it was in to some goal kicking before some whole ground match simulation that was a little messy but certainly willing.

Standout moments were probably:
- Garlett's zip to get on to loose balls or shut down rebounds and a nice front and centre then underground handball to a free Fritsch
- Joel Smith plucking a one handed contested mark with ease
- Lever's willingness to run and be an option as soon as a fellow defender has got the ball.

Hows the Weid tracking? Any legitimate observations?

I was there for about the last half hour or so. Saw Joel Smith's one handed pluck. He has got some great tricks, hopefully he can have an injury free year.

I haven't got a lot to say, just some casual observations;

There is a lot of talent on the park. We have a serious amount of depth. Actually our depth flattered us in JLT 1 coz we constantly had an AFL quality team on the ground even with the 7 extras. Hopefully we have some luck with injuries in the areas we are maybe a little thin.

My players of note were Melksham who plays the small forward role very well. I think he is in for his best ever season in the game.

Fritsch stands out. No news there.

Balic. He was in the midfield mix and was pretty impressive. May not debut round 1 but should be a super addition to the Casey team and look for him to make his mark at some stage this year.

My tip is for Frost to get a go this week. He looked ready.

In the match sim Hogan played high half forward and Tom deep full forward. The mix seemed to work well.

No but I have some illegitimate ones - he's stronger and fitter....

Jetta????

And so i'm guessing Viney and Garlett will play Thursday?

Viney has only been in full training for a week or two. I'd be stunned if he played against St Kilda.

Viney will play on Thursday. His run’s been timed perfectly...

How’s the Weed appear to be coming along @DeeSpencer?

Will he be a player?

Didn't see enough of him really. All I can say is it was nice to see him in the main group.

Beautiful morning today, dropped the car off for service in Docklands and walked along the Yarra heading for Gosch’s paddock. Watched a bit of the Moomba water skiiing, the tricks had started, then on to Gosch’s and watched the Rebels training until the JLT squad appeared. Routine session that went for about an hour, emphasis on ball skills, kicking etc. They broke up into groups and I watched the mids exercise, Gawn and Pedo in the ruck ball ups but taking it in turns to tap to the nominated mid who would call which side to tap the ball. The mids were Jones, Oliver, Tyson, Salem, Angus and Maynard. Watched Fritsch, he doesn’t do much wrong, clean hands and hits most targets. They did a few of the torpedo bombs out of the goal square and boy can some of them roost it, Pedo, Hunt, Vince all kicking it past the centre it seemed. Not sure of the length of Gosch’s but I hope to see a bit of this from our kick outs. Jetta training well.

No TMac, Viney, AVB or McKenna. Lewis and ANB doing laps. Non JLT players came out later and trained on their own, including Harmes, a probable omission.

Curious about the mysterious Harley Balic.  Not injured and not picked (not good enough?)

Not yet, evidently. Probably needs some continuity at Casey to build confidence  after the run he's had.

TMac was named on an extended interchange bench for JLT 2.  Based on this report I wonder if he is injured and whether he will play tomorrow night.

He played in the AFLX, so they might think he's done enough competitive stuff and giving him a freshen up, he did have the ankle issue at the start of pre-seaon, so probably just a rest, same as Harmes who also played the X as well. Seems strange cause I would have thought they'd want TMac playing alongside Hogan as much as possible?

He has a fair way to go I reckon. Pick 38 who has played 4 games.

Not sure why anyone thinks he would be a walk up start. Highly speculative IMO.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
