Wagner? wow. What little of him I saw in AFLX didn't inspire me that he has improved at all.

Looking fwd to seeing Kielty, Fritsch, Maynard....

+ Jeffy

Can't see Tim Smith or Harry Petty playing. Nor Keilty although I'd like to see him get a chance.

Not sure on the other 3 who get left out. Think you'd want Pedersen to spell Gawn and the key forwards. Similarly I'd be playing Frost so you have the option of 2 stopping talls in round 1.

I'd be leaving out Maynard, JKH and Bugg and having a look at Balic and Fritsch

Having watched the replays of AFLX Wagner made 1 bad mistake deep in the backline that coughed up a goal but otherwise was very good with the ball, with his spoils/intercepts and with what I saw of his positioning (which isn't easy to see on tv). He's looked very good on the training track this summer and got some harsh criticism for games he played out of position on the wing last year. He's no world beater but I think he pushes for round 1. Not surprised to see him picked for this.

I know Garlett might not be everyone's cup of tea, but you'd think an All Australian squad of 40 player would be a notable absentee...

Wagner ahead of Frost in the pecking order for the round 1 side?

why hasn't Spargo been selected !!!!!?

Or Baker.

I actually think it's a good thing neither have been selected - it shows that the bulk of our list is fit and that we don't need to blood any young players before they need to. It's a far cry from 2013 when all we did was play the younger guys as we had little else.

Isn’t it down to a team of 24? 6 out of that squad.

Rory Sloane got the same treatment.

I agree with that. I just want to see what they can do. I guess I'll have to wait.

26.  4 out

Yep. Sorry poor wording but I think the 6 who will miss out are as follows. 3 are very unlikely to play - Petty (age), Keilty (others preferred) and Tim Smith (fitness). 3 would be unlucky and for me those would be Bugg, Maynard and JKH.

@Drunkn167 might be better placed,  but Kielty nearly debuted last year, versatility, he can ruck, defend or go forward, his fitness has gone to another level, would not surprise me to see him included

Nope.  From the AFL website: Squads of 30 have been released with four to be cut before game time. Stringer is the only one of that trio to be named on the bench.

Yeah but from the Melb website and was what I hear from a realiable source

"The final list will be reduced to a 24-man team 90 minutes prior to the match."

Dec hasn't stated packing for Hobart yet so I don't think he'll be playing

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
