i hear ya but I reckon its a bit harsh on the big fella.  last 3 years he has averaged 16 games/season.  and the missed games in 2015 was partly coz he was in vfl not due to injury

i think he is in our top 5 players and certainly our top 5 most important. so happy to pay him as such

Will disagree on that DD

He is not in our best five based on performance over the last three years. He has had one good year which was 2016. If he was that good we shod have won more games. IMO he is a good tap ruckman who gives us little more on average.

Max Gawns 2016 season was great, OD.

'Good' was Jack Watts 2016 season.

Yes his only season that was  better than average.

Because it was the only year he stayed on the park.

The odds are against him staying on the park over the cause of a 3-4 year period are poor.

Hence we should not be over paying him.

He should not be in the top 25% of the payment list.

There is massive risk of us paying him very big money to sit in the outer with us.

I'd add that his second half of 2015 was the equal of his 2016 form.  He was the dominant big-man in the league following the Geelong match.

From my memory that match was the first time he influenced the result with four quarters and it was well into the season.

i am not saying he is a poor player, my complaint is he is not durable.

He is more than likely to go down with a long term injury before May next year.

I don't like the idea of having a large amount of our salary cap invested in a guy who average 10 games a year.

It was right in the middle of the season, you're right - but that did lead to 18 months of complete dominance, and he is still young by a ruckman's standards.  The first half of 2015 was more about opportunities - he needed Jamar to hand over the no.1 role so he could get a good run at it.

Will you guys relax over players pay, we have PJ and Josh Mahoney, we could have kept Watts and still be under the TPP, they know what they are doing

Signed on until 2021!

Or until one party falls out of love. A poor 2018 and he could be on the way to Port.

Good one Max!

We agree on rucks being of lesser importance but we have the best ruck in the league.

And, injury prone, or not - he is valuable and was going to get paid...

It is a fact of today's AFL fd. Everyone is tradable given the right deal.

I view all contracts as short term.

But will he play 18 games in 2018?

Never said you did. I am interested in who would be better paid than the injury prone but best ruckman in the league?

Petracca, Jones, Oliver, Hogan, T Mac, Viney, ???

It's just one of those situations where we can trade him or pay him.

It's certainly becoming easier to change clubs, or be given the arz, but why bring it up in every thread?

It's a statement of intent at a minimum, and I think we ought to be damn pleased about it.

Should we dredge up some of the doomsday posts regarding a player walkout following the pushing of Watts? Nah, lets not.

Gawn recently has been cruising on his own reputation. Hasn't put in hard enough and gets a nice pay packet for years to come. Needs a rocket up his derriere. Recover the hunger and take it on. Jury out here.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
