Sam Reid is gettable for 650k a year in salary...

Good comment. I havent made my mind up yet either but gut instinct is saying  he could well be a bust. Hope to be wrong.

Tell me about the 'gut' as my 'gut' is very different - what do you see that doesn't wash?

I think he looks like he can take a mark. Yes he's getting pushed aside at the moment but he may improve with size. Its the lack of intensity after the contest that's worrying me. Maybe that improves too....hope so. But I question if he's going to be too one dimensional. 

I'm expecting something a bit like Matthew Lloyd's 1996 from Weed this year.

A bunch of mostly 'meh', dropped repeatedly, and maybe one massive impressive game to give us all a bit of confidence for the future.

There's no denying that his last couple of AFL games were a bit... underwhelming. In difficult circumstances for a young key forward, for sure.

Dees should offer Peter Wright (suns) a 6 year deal. Perfect for us. 200cm fwd who can ruck.

Weed is 2-3 years away from being useful at the top level.

How useful ? No idea yet. 

Needs time etc etc.

Such rush to judgement, possibly borne out of our frustrating luck.

Forward line of:

Garlett.     Weideman.      Petracca

Kent.         Hogan.           Watts

On potential, that is something special.  However, there are reasons right now why each and every one of those positions is not delivering:

Hogan - family circumstances

Weideman - still developing, probably 12 months early to expect too much

Watts - being played out of position in the ruck

Kent - is this attitude?  Reports from the VFL not so promising

Petracca - hasn't 'broken out' yet, but I think could even play full forward for us today

Garlett is probably the only one who is up to scratch at the moment.

We can sub any of these players worth others (eg, Hannan), for similar results.

We have the makings of excellence on all lines, they are young (often the youngest team of the round), and haven't played to their group potential.  If we could snare a 200+forward ruck that didn't have a [censored] tickler moustache and could deliver of course we would.  But not too many of them are lying around for under a million bucks a season.

I think the Weed will really arrive - but expect it will be in 2018.

He picked up a hip injury after Xmas, put him back, hasn't managed a full pre season yet, teaching him defence

Just to Segway back to the title for a second - great to see pedo back he seems like such a legend with the attitude you'd want in every player. Love to see him kick a bag today!

Fair observation.

Great sides have depth to their forward lines and while ours is great with the advancement of Watts and the maturing Hogan, another veteran of around 25 years and 100 games would be handy. I have faith in Weids but he may be 2 years away before becoming a very good frwd.

 

Pedo rucked well v ESS,but not consistent to be a forward. Weed needs to be rotated from 1sts and 2nds, Smith,Keilty,White  need a bit of experience in the seniors.

One option for a mature forward to compliment Hogan & Watts next year while Weid continues to develop who is good in the air and would also be able to put on pressure when the ball hits the ground is already on our list.

Fact of the matter is that he's contracted for 2018 and with Tommy & Oscar Mc, Frost and the emergence of Joel Smith and Wagner, I think we all know Col's days in defence are over.

I hope the club tries and turns him into a forward in 2018 for his own sake. No point having him 6th in line for tall defenders when you could try him in a position he was initially drafted for where we lack some depth. Worst case scenario it doesn't work and we delist him at the end of 2018 anyway.

Since IDCAD about Essendon, remind us of Lloyd's 1996?   How many goals, how many games, had he mastered the dive yet?

Interesting thoughts.

If I remember correctly he was recruited as a forward, though has played mainly back -- very notable exception the surprise win over EssenDrug at Docklands ?2007?

Firstly he has to recover enough to play at all; then the  coaching challenge of turning him into a forward.   At 191 cm surely not nearly big enough to be a forward / ruck relief though, which is what we need (though Pedo showed he can at the weekend; can he produce consistently enough?)
