That game against Richmond came out of nowhere. Yes the players bought in after Chapman spoke, but i doubt that was the entire story...

    Could be the biggest deck of cards fallover in Footy History if there is pressure brought to talk, but five day awkward pause would seem to have killed this happening.

    I think the Essendon Cheer Squad even had a banner saying ‘We have the Weapon’... cringe.

    • what was the alarm, and
    • Carlscum players' talk with Ratten, broken bones.

    Just cannot recall these things but a stir of the grey matter may be of assistance, if you wouldn't mind. Kind regards....

    Good friend of mine is well connected at Carlscum. I am referring to the “Get me the Good Stuff game”

    bones were broken that day, i was told Carlscum players were coming off the ground when rotated and saying “what the hell is going on out there”

    Players spoke to Ratten about it.

    By no means did we outplay them that night. We were absolute poo as well. It was more the fact that playing with a physique akin to a condom stuffed with walnuts tends to put stress on the body. I would suggest that this type of loss was always going to happen.

    From that point, soft tissue injuries piled up. Then the investigation was launched.

    Essendon put of so much press at the start of that season about their off-field program.  They were boasting about how much weight and size their players had added, whilst maintaining their speed and endurance.  They were hiding in plain sight.

    This paragraph from another article is particularly cringe-worthy:

    “At the start of the 2012 pre season coach James Hird promised the playing group that they were in for their hardest pre season ever, with an emphasis on bigger bodies and overall fitness. Apart from the occasional one paragraph news article tracking the Bombers progress through the pre season we have been basically kept in the dark with the club choosing to close down most training session from the prying eyes of the media... Internally the club appears to be ecstatic about the progress made over the pre season”

    I first heard this term used to describe Fitzroy's Mick Conlan. I don't recall him ever being accused of anything improper or having excess stress on his body. Must have had better quality condoms in the 80s.

    I believe that comparison was credited to Clive James when describing Arnie Schwarzenegger.

    There were rumors going about re: Fitzroy and ‘Roids in the 80’s but they remained just that. A bit like the Weagles in the ‘90’s, it never went beyond speculation.

    Probably a reaction to the AIDS television advertising prevalent at the time. Even Clive Lloyd started using 3 rubbers on his batting handle.

    Quite right. Now that you've mentioned the Clive James description , I think I might be mistaken about Mick Conlan's nickname.

      When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

      The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
      Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
